autocad_2020_english_win_64bit_dlm.sfx.exe is the Windows 64-bit, self-extracting download package used to install AutoCAD 2020 in English. The filename matches Autodesk’s legacy installer convention, but a filename alone cannot prove that a particular copy is genuine. Treat it as safe only when it came from an Autodesk-controlled download and has a valid Autodesk digital signature. If installation fails with Windows Installer error 1603 or a licensing message, diagnose the component named in the logs before attempting a full reinstall.

What the filename means

The name is descriptive rather than an authentication mechanism:

  • autocad_2020 identifies the AutoCAD release.
  • english indicates the language package.
  • win_64bit indicates a 64-bit Windows package.
  • dlm is associated with Autodesk’s download-manager packaging.
  • .sfx.exe means a self-extracting executable. Autodesk’s installation guidance says products released in 2024 and earlier use this format.

Large Autodesk products can be divided into several installer parts. If Autodesk gives you multiple .sfx.exe files, every part must be downloaded into the same folder. You normally start one part; it extracts the installation files and launches Autodesk setup. A third-party listing may associate this exact filename with “Autodesk Download Manager,” but that is only corroboration, not proof that your copy is authentic.

The package can install more than the main AutoCAD program. Depending on the edition and deployment package, setup may also process Autodesk licensing components, material libraries, Microsoft Visual C++ components and other prerequisites. A failure in one prerequisite can stop the entire installation even when the main executable is intact.

Is autocad_2020_english_win_64bit_dlm.sfx.exe safe?

It is conditionally safe, not automatically safe. Make the decision from provenance, signature and a malware scan, rather than from the name or an icon.

Use an Autodesk-controlled download

Obtain AutoCAD 2020 through an Autodesk account, an Autodesk support-controlled download or an administrator’s verified Autodesk deployment. Replace copies obtained from torrents, cracks, file lockers or unknown mirrors. Do not weaken Windows security controls to make an unverified copy run.

Check the Authenticode signature

  1. In File Explorer, right-click the file and select Properties.
  2. Open the Digital Signatures tab. If the tab is absent, the file is not digitally signed in a way Windows can display.
  3. Select the signer, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
  4. Open the certificate path and verify that the signer identifies Autodesk and that the certificate chain is trusted. Check the signing time and whether Windows reports that the file was changed after signing.

Autodesk describes a digital signature as encrypted information added to a file to identify its originator and indicate whether the file has been altered since signing. A valid signature supports authenticity and integrity; it does not guarantee that the package is appropriate for your license or that setup will succeed.

Scan before extraction

Keep Windows and your antivirus definitions current, then scan the downloaded file before opening it. If the scan detects malware, quarantine the file and obtain a fresh Autodesk download. Do not disable antivirus merely because setup is inconvenient.

Interpret browser warnings correctly

Browsers can warn about executable downloads. Autodesk documents a Chrome flow of More actions > Keep > Keep anyway > Open file when the executable was obtained directly through an Autodesk website. That action only allows a known Autodesk download to proceed; it does not make an unknown mirror safe. For a file whose origin you cannot verify, discard it instead.

Prepare a clean AutoCAD 2020 installation

Confirm entitlement and package completeness

Verify that your Autodesk account or organization is entitled to AutoCAD 2020 and that you have the correct language and Windows architecture. If the download is split into parts, compare the list supplied by Autodesk and make sure every part is present. A missing part can look like a damaged installer.

Use a short local extraction path

Create a local folder such as C:AutodeskAutoCAD_2020_English_win_64bit_dlm. Avoid a network share, removable drive, deeply nested temporary path or a folder synchronized by cloud software. Long paths, intermittent network access and file locking can produce misleading setup failures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run the self-extractor elevated

  1. Close other installers and save your work.
  2. Right-click the appropriate .sfx.exe file and choose Run as administrator.
  3. When prompted for an extraction location, select the short local folder you created.
  4. Allow extraction to finish, then start the Autodesk setup program from the extracted folder.
  5. Record the exact error text, product name and time if setup stops. Those details help match the failure to a component log.

Do not delete the extracted files until installation has either completed or you have copied the logs. Keeping the original installer and an untouched copy of the extraction gives you a recovery path if a licensing component must be removed.

Understand Windows Installer error 1603

Error 1603 is a generic Windows Installer failure. It does not identify one universal defect. Autodesk lists several possible causes, including a corrupted Autodesk Desktop Licensing Service, damaged Autodesk Installer (ODIS), broken Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables, missing Windows updates, permissions, security-software interference, residual files from an earlier installation and a corrupted installation image.

Read the summary and component logs before changing the system. The first named component is your best clue:

Log or symptom Most targeted next action
Autodesk Desktop Licensing Service, AdskLicensing or a licensing symbolic-link message Repair the licensing service and check the Create symbolic links user right.
Autodesk Installer or ODIS under C:Program FilesAutodeskAdODISV1 Use Autodesk’s documented ODIS removal tool, then install the current Autodesk Installer.
Visual C++ runtime or prerequisite failure Update Windows and repair or reinstall the required Microsoft Visual C++ packages, including both architectures where required.
Access denied, policy or service-creation failure Use an administrative account and involve the domain administrator if policy blocks the operation.
Files unavailable, timeout or extraction error from a share Re-extract every part to a fresh local folder and run setup locally.

Fix AutoCAD 2020 installation errors in evidence-based order

1. Repair Autodesk Desktop Licensing Service

For AutoCAD 2020 deployment failures, Autodesk specifically recommends repairing the licensing component before repeating setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Keep a copy of the verified AutoCAD installer and your extracted files.
  2. Open File Explorer and browse to C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesAutodesk SharedAdskLicensing.
  3. Run uninstall.exe from that folder with administrative approval.
  4. Install the latest Autodesk Licensing Service update supplied by Autodesk for your product and Windows system.
  5. Restart Windows and retry AutoCAD setup from the local extraction folder.

If the folder or executable is missing, the licensing service may already be incomplete. Do not copy licensing files from another computer; obtain the current service package through Autodesk and follow its deployment instructions.

2. Repair Autodesk Installer (ODIS)

If the log identifies ODIS, the Autodesk Installer itself may be damaged. The installation files are under C:Program FilesAutodeskAdODISV1.

  1. Close Autodesk applications and setup windows.
  2. Use Autodesk’s documented Autodesk Installer removal tool rather than deleting random files from the directory.
  3. Install the current Autodesk Installer package.
  4. Reboot if requested, then run the AutoCAD installer again as administrator.

Removing ODIS can affect other Autodesk products that share the installer. Check what is installed on the computer and schedule the repair when those applications are closed.

3. Update Windows and repair Visual C++ Redistributables

Install all applicable Windows updates, restart, and retry only after the restart completes. Then open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Control Panel > Programs and Features on older Windows) and locate the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable entries named in the setup log.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choose Modify or Repair when that option is available.
  • If repair does not resolve the log error, reinstall the required redistributable from Microsoft.
  • On 64-bit Windows, do not assume that the x64 package alone is sufficient; Autodesk notes that both x86 and x64 redistributables may be needed.

Restart after changing the runtimes. Installing an unrelated runtime version at random can leave the original prerequisite problem unchanged, so use the version identified by the installer or Autodesk requirements.

4. Correct permissions and domain-policy restrictions

Use an account that has local administrative rights, then right-click the self-extractor and choose Run as administrator. If the log says the licensing component cannot create a symbolic link, Autodesk identifies the Windows Create symbolic links user right as a possible cause.

  1. Ask your IT administrator to review the computer’s local or domain security policy for the account running setup.
  2. Have the administrator grant the required right according to organizational policy, or install the licensing service for you.
  3. Sign out or restart if policy changes require it, then retry from the local folder.

Do not bypass domain controls or alter security policy permanently on a managed computer. A successful install that violates policy can be removed or blocked later.

5. Check security-software interference without abandoning protection

Endpoint security can block a legitimate installer from creating services, writing shared files or modifying protected locations. Keep protection enabled wherever possible. If an administrator determines that a verified Autodesk package is being blocked, use a narrowly scoped, temporary exclusion only for the installation activity. Restore normal protection immediately after setup and remove the exclusion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Never use this step to make an unsigned or mirror-provided executable run. If security software reports malware rather than a policy block, stop and replace the download.

6. Remove documented residual Autodesk state

Previous failed installations can leave services, installer records or files that cause the next attempt to fail. Use Autodesk’s clean-uninstall guidance for the affected product and components, then reboot. Do not manually delete unrelated Autodesk folders while another Autodesk product is in use; shared licensing and installer components may be required by that product.

After cleanup:

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Confirm that the old setup process is no longer running in Task Manager.
  3. Re-extract every installer part into a new local folder.
  4. Run the verified self-extractor as administrator and launch setup again.

7. Eliminate network and corrupted-image variables

If setup was launched from a server, VPN-mounted share or network redirect, copy all parts to a local disk and extract there. Deployment timeouts and incomplete reads can produce the same generic 1603 code as a damaged prerequisite. If the local copy still fails, download the package again through Autodesk, verify its signature and repeat the extraction rather than repeatedly launching the suspect copy.

When AutoCAD installs but licensing fails afterward

A license-manager message after installation is different from a damaged main program. AutoCAD 2020 and newer can depend on the Autodesk Desktop Licensing Service. A missing, stopped or corrupted service can prevent the application from obtaining a license even though setup reported success.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Windows Services console by pressing Win+R, entering services.msc, and pressing Enter.
  2. Locate the Autodesk licensing service. Check whether it exists, whether its status is Running, and whether its startup setting matches your organization’s deployment.
  3. If it is stopped, start it and retry AutoCAD.
  4. If it will not start or is missing, repair or reinstall the current Autodesk Licensing Service, then restart Windows.
  5. Only reinstall AutoCAD after the service repair fails or the logs show that the application files themselves are damaged.

On a managed computer, service-account permissions and endpoint policy can prevent the service from starting. Ask the administrator to review the service event and licensing logs instead of repeatedly reinstalling the whole product.

How to read the logs without guessing

Setup commonly produces a summary log and component-specific logs in temporary or Autodesk installer locations. The exact path can vary by package and Windows configuration, so use the path shown in the setup error or Autodesk’s current troubleshooting instructions.

  • Search for error, failed, return value 3, AdskLicensing, ODIS, Visual C++, access denied and symbolic link.
  • Record the component name, error code and preceding operation; the final line often reports only the generic 1603 result.
  • Compare the timestamp with Windows Event Viewer entries under application or installer-related logs.
  • Change one cause at a time and preserve the new log after each retry.

This process prevents a common mistake: repeatedly uninstalling and reinstalling AutoCAD when the real failure is a licensing service, ODIS, runtime or policy component shared by several Autodesk products.

Common mistakes that make the problem worse

  • Trusting the filename: malware can use a convincing Autodesk-style name.
  • Using only one part of a split download: setup may extract incompletely or fail on a missing payload.
  • Running from a network share: connectivity and permissions can mimic a corrupt installer.
  • Deleting shared Autodesk folders manually: this can break another Autodesk product’s licensing or installer.
  • Disabling antivirus broadly: it removes protection without proving that security software caused the failure.
  • Applying a random 1603 fix: the code is generic; the component log should determine the remedy.
  • Changing domain policy yourself: a managed computer may require an administrator to grant the Create symbolic links right or install the service.
  • Repeating setup without rebooting: pending Windows updates and locked services can make every attempt fail in the same way.

Choosing the safest remedy

Your situation Preferred action Why
The file came from Autodesk and has a valid Autodesk signature Scan it, extract locally and run as administrator Preserves provenance while addressing common path and permission issues
The signature is missing or invalid Do not run it; download again through Autodesk The filename cannot authenticate an unsigned copy
Logs name licensing Repair Autodesk Desktop Licensing Service first Targets the failing component instead of reinstalling everything
Logs name ODIS Use the Autodesk Installer removal tool and reinstall the current Autodesk Installer Replaces a damaged installer framework
Logs name Visual C++ or Windows prerequisites Update Windows and repair the required x86/x64 redistributables Restores dependencies setup needs
The computer is domain-managed Give the logs to IT and request the required policy or service repair Local changes may be blocked or violate policy
Residual Autodesk files are documented Perform Autodesk clean uninstall, reboot and re-extract locally Removes known damaged state before a fresh attempt

Optional shortcut after the manual fixes

If you prefer an assisted cleanup after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL files, while also offering settings tweaks, temporary-file cleanup, privacy tools, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; a category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every installer or licensing failure.
