aswShMin.exe is associated with Avast Antivirus PE and Avast Rescue Disk components. A copy under an Avast installation or RescueDisk folder may be legitimate, but the filename alone cannot prove that it is safe: different Avast builds use different paths, file sizes and hashes. Verify the complete path, digital signature and a current security scan before allowing, deleting or replacing it.
The most documented problem is an “aswShMin.exe – No Disk” dialog while creating or booting Avast rescue media from USB. The error can also follow a damaged Avast installation, an unavailable removable drive or an executable placed somewhere it does not belong. The procedure below separates those cases and gives you a safe manual fix.

What aswShMin.exe is used for
File catalogs associate aswShMin.exe with “Avast Antivirus PE,” the lightweight Windows environment used by Avast Rescue Disk. Inventory records also list it among Avast Small Office Protection files and other Rescue Disk components. One catalog entry identifies Avast Antivirus version 19.8.4793.0, but that does not establish the version installed on your computer today.

These locations are reassuring only when the file is signed by Avast or Gen Digital and your security software finds no threat. A similarly named file in a user profile, %Temp%, Downloads, a browser cache or an unrelated program folder should be treated as suspicious until investigated.
Is aswShMin.exe safe or a virus?
There is no reliable safety verdict based on the name alone. The same filename can be copied by malware, while legitimate Avast releases can differ internally. Use all four checks below together:
- Path: the executable is inside the Avast installation and RescueDisk directories rather than a writable personal or temporary folder.
- Signature: File Explorer shows a valid digital signature for Avast or Gen Digital; an invalid, missing or unknown signer requires investigation.
- Scan result: Microsoft Defender and any other current endpoint protection report no threat after their definitions are updated.
- Behavior: the process appears during an Avast rescue-media or scanning operation, not as an unexplained startup process or repeated popup during ordinary work.
Microsoft advises running a regularly updated antivirus product such as Microsoft Defender Antivirus, which is built into modern Windows versions. Microsoft also describes potentially unwanted applications as software that can slow a machine, show unexpected advertising or install more harmful software. Those warnings are general guidance; they do not identify this particular file as malicious.
How to check the path and signer
- When the alert appears, open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. On the Details tab, right-click the process and choose Open file location. If the process has already closed, search foraswShMin.exein File Explorer and note every copy. - Right-click the file, select Properties, and record the Location, File description, Product name and Digital Signatures tab. Open the signature details and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
- On the Details tab, compare the file version with the Avast version shown in Avast’s own About or update screen. A mismatch is a reason to repair the parent product, not to download a replacement EXE.
- For a hash you need to preserve for support, open PowerShell and run
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 'C:fullpathaswShMin.exe'. Compare the result only with a hash published for the same Avast build; a different hash by itself does not prove infection.
Why the “No Disk” error appears
Avast Community reports describe an aswShMin.exe - No Disk dialog while creating or booting USB rescue media. Windows displays this class of dialog when a program tries to access a drive that is missing, has changed letters or is not ready. Rescue-media creation adds variables that do not exist in a normal antivirus scan.
| When it happens | Likely area to check | What the symptom does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| While creating a Rescue Disk USB | USB drive connection, filesystem, write access, Avast build or a damaged Rescue Disk component | It does not by itself prove that aswShMin.exe is malware. |
| During a USB rescue boot | Firmware boot mode, boot order, USB port, removable media or an incomplete image | It does not identify the file’s publisher or integrity. |
| During ordinary Windows use with no rescue operation | Unexpected startup entry, stale removable-drive reference, damaged Avast installation or an incorrectly placed copy | It is not normal behavior merely because the filename resembles an Avast component. |
Write down the exact dialog text, the path shown in any accompanying details, your Avast product and version, your Windows edition and version, and whether the message appears in normal Windows or a rescue environment. That information determines which branch of the repair sequence is appropriate.

Before changing anything
Do not delete the file immediately, replace it from a “DLL/EXE download” site or repeatedly dismiss the dialog without recording details. A legitimate Rescue Disk component may be needed to create or boot recovery media, and an illegitimate copy may be evidence of a wider compromise.
- Save open work and disconnect external drives that are not needed for the investigation.
- Capture screenshots of the error and export or write down the full path, file version, signer, hash and Avast version.
- Note whether Defender, Avast or another security product has already shown a detection name.
- If you suspect an active compromise, avoid signing in to sensitive accounts until the scans below are complete.
Manual fixes for aswShMin.exe errors
1. Update protection and run a full scan
Start with malware handling before repairing Windows files. In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection, select Protection updates, choose Check for updates, then return to Scan options and run Full scan. Leave the computer connected to power and allow the scan to finish.
If the suspicious process returns, interferes with Windows or cannot be removed, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same Scan options page. Windows will restart into a separate scanning environment. Save work first and expect the computer to be unavailable during the restart and scan.
Record the exact detection name and action taken. A clean scan does not validate an unexpected path or signature, but a positive detection changes the next step: isolate the file rather than trying to repair it in place.
2. Repair or update Avast when the path is legitimate
If the file is under an Avast RescueDisk directory, update Avast through its normal interface or supported installer. If Windows offers a repair operation for the installed Avast program, use it instead of copying individual files.

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (called Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds).
- Select the Avast product associated with the file and choose Modify, Change or Repair if that option is provided by the installer.
- Restart Windows when prompted, then check for Avast updates again.
- Recheck the executable’s path and signature. If the error remains, preserve the new version and event details for Avast support rather than downloading a standalone replacement.
Repairing the parent product can replace damaged Rescue Disk components while preserving the product’s registration and settings. Do not assume that a successful repair makes a copy in a different folder trustworthy; repeat the path, signature and scan checks.

3. Recreate the rescue media on known-good USB storage
When the dialog occurs during Rescue Disk creation or boot, recreate the media instead of reusing a possibly incomplete image. The USB flash drive is only the media container; it does not make the executable safe or unsafe.
- Back up any files on the USB drive, because creating bootable media can erase it.
- Use a known-good drive with enough capacity for the Rescue Disk image, connect it directly to the computer and avoid hubs or unstable front-panel ports.
- In Avast’s Rescue Disk workflow, select the freshly connected drive and allow the image to finish. Do not unplug it while the process is writing.
- If creation fails, try another USB port and another known-good drive. Check whether the drive is read-only, has filesystem errors or receives a different drive letter after reconnection.
- For a boot failure, enter your computer’s firmware boot menu and choose the USB entry that matches the installed boot mode. Firmware settings and Avast versions can affect whether the media starts.
If the same error appears with multiple drives after Avast has been repaired, the problem is more likely an Avast component, firmware compatibility issue or Windows storage problem than one defective USB stick.
4. Handle a “No Disk” dialog during normal Windows use
If you are not creating or booting rescue media, first reconnect any removable drive that was present when Avast or another program was configured. A missing drive letter can trigger a generic No Disk dialog. After reconnecting it, restart Windows and see whether the message returns without launching a rescue operation.
Next, inspect automatic launch points without deleting anything yet. In Task Manager’s Startup apps tab, disable only an entry you can clearly associate with the unexpected copy, then restart and observe. Also review Task Scheduler for a task whose executable path points to a user profile, Temp folder or unknown publisher. Export or photograph the task details before changing them so support can review the evidence.

If the dialog disappears after Avast is repaired or removed through its supported uninstaller, reinstall only from the product’s official installer. Do not use a file-sharing site to obtain a similarly named executable.
5. Isolate an unexpected copy or positive detection
For a copy outside an Avast directory, an invalid signature or a positive scan, stop treating it as a normal Avast component. Disconnect the affected computer from networks if you have reason to suspect active compromise, then use your security product to quarantine the file. Quarantine is safer than manual deletion because it preserves evidence and allows restoration if a false positive is confirmed.
Run a full scan again after quarantine and review startup entries, scheduled tasks, recent downloads and newly installed applications for related changes. Do not open the file to “test” it. If the security product cannot quarantine it while Windows is running, use Defender Offline or the product’s own boot-time cleaning option.
6. Repair protected Windows files only after malware handling
System File Checker is for damaged or modified protected Windows files; it is not a substitute for a malware scan and normally will not repair an Avast-owned executable. After suspicious files have been isolated, open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and run:
Recommended Free Tools
sfc /scannow
Wait for verification to reach 100 percent and save the result. If SFC reports files it could not repair, record that message and use Microsoft’s current servicing guidance rather than deleting files from C:WindowsSystem32 manually. Restart and retest the original workflow only after the scan and any requested repair have completed.

7. Escalate with complete evidence
Contact Avast support when the file is in a normal RescueDisk path, has a valid Avast or Gen Digital signature, and still fails after an Avast repair and fresh media attempt. Contact Microsoft or your security provider when Defender reports a threat, the signer is invalid or the file is in an unexpected location.
Provide the full path, file size, SHA-256 hash, digital-signature details, Avast and Windows versions, exact dialog text, scan-detection name, event logs and the steps that reproduce the error. Those details distinguish a build-specific Rescue Disk bug from a damaged installation or an unrelated malicious file.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you delete aswShMin.exe?
Do not delete it simply because the name is unfamiliar or because a No Disk dialog appeared. Removing a legitimate copy from Avast’s RescueDisk directory can break Rescue Disk creation or booting, and deleting an active file may leave the product in an inconsistent state.

What to remember
- aswShMin.exe is linked to Avast Antivirus PE and Rescue Disk components, but the filename is not an identity check.
- Avast product generations can use different directories, sizes and hashes, so compare evidence with the same installed build.
- The best-documented No Disk problem involves rescue-media and USB workflows; it does not automatically indicate a virus.
- Use updated Microsoft Defender scans, including Offline scan when necessary, before repairing Windows or deleting files.
- Repair or uninstall the parent Avast product through supported software. Do not download a replacement executable from an untrusted file site.
As an optional shortcut after these manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, and includes cleanup and an app-crash log.
