Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteasc.exe is usually the main executable for IObit Advanced SystemCare, not a Windows system file. A copy installed inside that program’s own folder can be legitimate. The same filename in C:Windows, C:WindowsSystem32, a temporary directory, or an unrelated app folder deserves investigation because malware can impersonate a trusted filename. The reliable checks are the complete path, the file’s digital signature, the parent application, startup behavior, and a security scan.
What asc.exe is and why its location matters
Windows identifies programs by their executable files, and asc.exe is associated with IObit Advanced SystemCare in Microsoft Q&A discussions and process references. It is not part of Windows itself. A normal installation places it in an IObit Advanced SystemCare program directory, although the exact drive and folder can vary if the application was installed somewhere other than the default location.

The name alone does not establish trust. An attacker can name a different program asc.exe, copy it into a system-looking directory, or launch it from a temporary folder. Treat the path and signature as evidence, not the filename. A file in the expected Advanced SystemCare directory with a valid signature from the expected publisher is materially different from an unsigned file that appeared in a Windows directory.

Is asc.exe safe or a virus?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer. A correctly installed copy belonging to Advanced SystemCare may be legitimate, while an impostor with the same name may be unwanted or malicious. Use these checks together:

| Check | What supports a legitimate installation | What needs investigation |
|---|---|---|
| File path | The file is inside an installed IObit Advanced SystemCare folder. | It is in C:Windows, C:WindowsSystem32, a temporary folder, a downloads folder, or an unrelated program directory. |
| Digital signature | Properties → Digital Signatures shows an expected publisher and Windows reports that the signature is valid. | The file is unsigned, the signature is invalid, or the signer does not match the installed application. |
| Parent application | Advanced SystemCare appears in Windows’ installed-app list and you knowingly installed it. | No such application is installed, or the file appeared after an unexplained download or browser event. |
| Security result | Updated Microsoft Defender scans do not detect the file. | Defender or another reputable security product detects it, or the alert returns after removal. |
| Behavior | It starts only with the parent application and has a clear, expected purpose. | It launches from an odd location, creates unexplained startup entries, shows intrusive behavior, or repeatedly reappears. |
Smart App Control also considers reputation and signature information when deciding whether to run an app. A warning is a reason to verify the file, not proof by itself that every copy of asc.exe is malware.
How to check the file safely
- Locate the running process. Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. If the compact view is shown, choose More details. On the Processes or Details tab, findasc.exe, right-click it, and choose Open file location. Record the complete path before deleting or moving anything. - Compare the path with the parent program. An expected path is an IObit Advanced SystemCare installation directory. A Windows system directory, a temporary directory, or an unrelated folder is not a normal location for this executable. Do not whitelist an unexpected copy merely because its name is familiar.
- Inspect the signature. Close the running program if possible, right-click the file, choose Properties, and open Digital Signatures. Select the signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows says the signature is valid and that the signer is appropriate for the installed software. An absent or invalid signature increases the risk but should be considered alongside the path and scan results.
- Check installed applications. In Windows 11, open Settings → Apps → Installed apps. In Windows 10, open Settings → Apps → Apps & features. Search for Advanced SystemCare. If it is absent, investigate the file rather than assuming it is an orphan that can be safely run.
- Update Defender before scanning. Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection updates, select Check for updates, then return to Virus & threat protection and run a Full scan. Microsoft states that “Microsoft Defender Antivirus comes built-in to Windows 10 and Windows 11.” Keep another real-time antivirus product enabled if you use one, but avoid running multiple real-time engines simultaneously.
- Escalate when suspicion remains. If a detection persists, the computer shows signs of compromise, or the file keeps returning, use Microsoft Safety Scanner or Microsoft Defender Offline from Windows Security. Defender Offline restarts the PC and scans before the normal Windows environment loads, which can help when a process interferes with cleanup. Follow the security product’s quarantine or removal action and restart when requested.
Do not restore a quarantined file simply because an application displays an error. First verify the path, signature, and parent program. If the file is genuinely part of a wanted installation, repair that installation from a trusted installer rather than downloading a replacement executable from an unfamiliar site.
How to interpret the path, signature and behavior together
One reassuring clue is not enough. For example, an unsigned file in an Advanced SystemCare folder still deserves a scan, while a signed file in C:WindowsSystem32 is suspicious because its location does not fit the program that normally owns it. Likewise, a validly signed copy that launches at every logon when Advanced SystemCare is not installed should be investigated for an orphaned startup entry or impersonation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use Task Manager’s Open file location rather than browsing for a file with Windows Search and assuming it is the active process. Search can reveal old installers, backups, or multiple versions. For every copy, note the full path, file version, creation or modification context, and which process launched it. Compare those details with the Advanced SystemCare entry in Installed apps.
Do not use third-party danger scores as a substitute for these checks. Such scores are heuristics, not a measured rate of malicious files. A clean scan is helpful but cannot compensate for an unexplained location or an invalid signature; conversely, a false positive should be resolved by repairing the owning application, not by downloading a replacement from an unknown site.
What a potentially unwanted app detection means
Microsoft distinguishes potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) from confirmed malware. A PUA may slow a computer, display unexpected advertising, or install additional software, yet its classification does not by itself prove that the file is a virus. Windows Security can block a PUA while leaving the item on disk. Microsoft’s guidance says: “Until you select an action to take, and have Windows Security take that action, the PUA that was detected is only blocked on your system; it’s not removed.” Open the detection in Windows Security, review the path and details, then choose the offered action if you do not want the software.

If you intentionally installed Advanced SystemCare, decide whether its features justify allowing it to remain. If you did not install it, or it arrived bundled with another download, choose quarantine or removal and then review Installed apps, Startup apps, browser extensions, and scheduled entries for related software. Blocking alone does not finish cleanup.
Fix “ASC.exe – Unable to Locate Component” and missing rtl120.bpl
The documented message ASC.exe - Unable to Locate Component may say that rtl120.bpl is missing. Microsoft Q&A guidance associates this component with Advanced SystemCare and recommends repairing the application that owns it. A BPL file is a runtime component; downloading a random standalone copy can provide the wrong version or a malicious file.
If you still want Advanced SystemCare
- Save your work and close Advanced SystemCare and any related windows.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps (Windows 11) or Settings → Apps → Apps & features (Windows 10).
- Select Advanced SystemCare and choose Uninstall. If the installer offers a repair option, use it; otherwise complete the uninstall.
- Restart Windows to release locked files and services.
- Obtain the installer from the software publisher or another source you trust, verify that the download is intended for your Windows edition, and install it again.
- Run a Defender scan after installation. Confirm that the new
asc.exeis in the application’s directory and that its signature is valid.
If you no longer want the program
Uninstall Advanced SystemCare through Windows’ app controls and reboot. Do not download rtl120.bpl from a “DLL fix” website, and do not delete only asc.exe. Removing one executable can leave services, startup entries, scheduled tasks, and broken components behind.
Fix “ASC.exe has stopped working” and other startup errors
Messages such as ASC.exe has stopped working, not a valid Win32 application, and application-initialization errors do not have one proven cause. The same message can result from a damaged installation, an incompatible build, a missing component, a bad update, or an unsafe copy. Work through the checks in this order so that you do not repair a file that should instead be removed.
1. Verify which copy is failing
Use Task Manager’s Open file location command and record the path. If the error names a file outside the Advanced SystemCare directory, stop launching it and complete the security procedure above. If more than one asc.exe exists, compare each file separately; fixing one does not make another copy trustworthy.

3. Reinstall the owning application
Use the uninstall-and-reinstall sequence described for rtl120.bpl. Reinstallation replaces missing files with a matched set and is safer than copying individual executables or runtime components. If Windows reports that the program is already removed, reboot and check the installed-app list again; then scan the leftover directory before deleting it.
4. Check compatibility and updates
Confirm that the application build supports your Windows edition and that Windows is fully updated. The available guidance does not establish a single registry command, cleaner, or system command that fixes every ASC.exe crash, so avoid “one-click” repair claims and registry edits that have no documented connection to the specific error.
5. Scan before restoring or excluding files
If Defender or another security product flags the executable, quarantine it and investigate. Do not create an exclusion merely to make the error disappear. A valid repair requires a trusted installation, an expected location, and a clean scan result.
Can you disable or uninstall asc.exe?
Temporarily stop it
In Task Manager, right-click the process and choose End task. This stops the current instance but does not remove the application or prevent it from starting again. If it immediately returns, the parent program, a service, or a startup entry is launching it.
Prevent automatic startup
In Task Manager, open Startup apps, select the Advanced SystemCare entry, and choose Disable if you do not want it to start with Windows. This changes startup behavior; it does not uninstall the program. Recheck the file path before disabling an entry that points to an unexpected executable.
Remove it cleanly
Uninstall the parent application from Windows’ installed-app controls, then restart. After rebooting, inspect Task Manager and the installed-app list. If an unexpected asc.exe remains, run a full scan and follow the security product’s removal process. Manual deletion should be a last step after the parent program and security state are understood.

How to compare two asc.exe files
When two files share the name, compare the attributes that identify the software rather than relying on a filename reputation score.
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Path | Is each file inside the same expected Advanced SystemCare installation directory, or does one run from Windows, temporary, or unrelated folders? |
| Publisher and signature | Does each file have a valid digital signature, and does the signer match the parent application? |
| Version and parent app | Which Advanced SystemCare version installed it? Is that application still listed in Windows? |
| Startup behavior | Does it launch only with the known application, or does it create an unexplained startup or scheduled entry? |
| Security result | What do current Defender definitions and a full scan report for each path? |
These checks cannot prove that a file is harmless in every case, but together they are more dependable than third-party “danger percentage” websites. No authoritative current prevalence or detection-rate statistic establishes how often asc.exe is malicious.
Historical security context
A SingCERT bulletin described a privilege-escalation issue involving IObit Advanced SystemCare 15 and insecure permissions in a ProgramData component. That is historical advisory context, not evidence that every current copy of asc.exe is malicious. Keep Windows and the parent application patched, and treat an old installation or an unexpectedly located file as a reason to verify rather than as proof of safety.
Costs and optional repair software
Windows Security, Microsoft Safety Scanner, and Defender Offline are available as Microsoft remediation tools; the important cost is the time required for scans and a possible restart. If you consider a commercial cleanup utility, read its terms carefully. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free trial limited by category for at least two days, followed by a subscription. It can help with common Windows issues such as broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL problems, temporary-file cleanup, privacy checks, vulnerability checks, and app-crash logging, but it does not replace antivirus scanning and cannot guarantee a fix for every ASC.exe failure.
A practical decision checklist
- Expected path, valid signature, installed parent, clean scan: the file is consistent with a normal Advanced SystemCare installation. Keep it only if you want the application.
- Expected path but missing component or crash: repair or reinstall the parent application; do not fetch individual BPL or DLL files from random sites.
- Unexpected path or invalid signature: do not whitelist it. Quarantine or remove it through your security product and investigate persistence.
- Advanced SystemCare is unwanted: uninstall the parent program, reboot, and scan for leftovers rather than deleting only
asc.exe. - Detection persists or compromise is suspected: update Defender, run a full scan, then use Microsoft Safety Scanner or Defender Offline.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is asc.exe a Windows process?
No. It is generally associated with IObit Advanced SystemCare. A copy in a Windows system directory is not a normal installation location and should be checked.
Should I delete asc.exe?
Do not delete it first. If Advanced SystemCare is unwanted, uninstall the parent application so services and startup entries are removed. If the file is suspicious, quarantine it through Windows Security and investigate.
Why is rtl120.bpl missing?
The Advanced SystemCare installation may be damaged or incomplete. Reinstall the owning application to restore a matched component set; avoid standalone BPL download sites.
Best Value
Will ending asc.exe stop it permanently?
No. End task stops only the current process. A parent program, service, or startup entry can launch it again.
What if Defender calls Advanced SystemCare a potentially unwanted app?
A PUA classification means the software may be undesirable, such as causing ads or installing other software; it is not automatically proof of malware. Review the detection and select a removal or quarantine action if you do not want it.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
How do I know which of two asc.exe files is legitimate?
Compare each complete path, digital signature and publisher, parent application and version, startup behavior, and current security-scan result. The filename alone cannot decide.
Can a valid signature guarantee safety?
No. A signature supports publisher identity, but location, installed parent, behavior, and scan results must also make sense.
What should I do if the file keeps coming back?
Update Defender, run a full scan, then use Microsoft Safety Scanner or Defender Offline. Persistent reappearance can indicate a service, startup entry, or compromise.
The Bottom Line
asc.exe is normally IObit Advanced SystemCare’s executable, not a Windows component. Verify its full path, publisher signature, parent application, startup behavior, and scan result before deciding. Reinstall Advanced SystemCare to repair a missing rtl120.bpl component, uninstall the parent program if you do not want it, and use Defender, Safety Scanner, or Defender Offline when the file is unexpected or keeps returning.
