Artificial Symbiotic Intelligence is a vision in which advanced AI capability could emerge from cooperation among models, tools, people and institutions—not only from one all-powerful model. In a September 24, 2026 essay, Benjamin Bratton, Blaise Agüera y Arcas and James Manyika argue that this possibility shifts attention from building a single intelligence to designing how a broader human–AI ecosystem is coordinated and governed. They present it as a way to think about a possible future, not as evidence that AGI will develop this way.
What the DeepMind Institute essay proposes
In “Artificial symbiotic intelligence: Agents, AGI and the orchestration of many minds,” published by the DeepMind Institute on September 24, 2026, the authors describe intelligence as potentially social and distributed. A system’s capabilities, in this account, may depend on an ensemble: models working with tools, shared knowledge, interaction protocols and human participants.
The proposal challenges the familiar picture of a singularity as one autonomous AI that recursively improves until it becomes a titanic, isolated intelligence. Instead, it asks readers to consider whether increasingly capable systems might take shape through interactions among many agents and the people and organizations around them. The authors invoke evolutionary transitions involving social organization as an analogy for this possibility; the analogy motivates their framing but does not demonstrate that AI will follow the same path.
How it differs from a single-model singularity
| Question | Single-model singularity framing | Artificial Symbiotic Intelligence framing |
|---|---|---|
| Where does capability reside? | Primarily in one increasingly powerful, isolated model. | Across an ensemble of models, tools, shared knowledge, protocols and people. |
| What is the design challenge? | Building and scaling one intelligence. | Coordinating and governing an ecosystem of interacting participants. |
| How should an agent be understood? | As a seemingly unified system. | As a potentially decomposable assembly of roles and components. |
| How is alignment framed? | As a constraint on an individual system. | As something that may develop through interaction among people, agents and institutions—a proposal in the essay, not a settled safety result. |
The essay captures its shift in emphasis this way: “The central problem of AGI would therefore shift from how to build an isolated machine intelligence to how to orchestrate, govern, and live within a complex network of AI agents, people, and the systems that connect them.”

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What decomposable agency means
“Decomposable agency” describes the possibility that what looks like one AI agent is actually an assembly of distinct components: models, personas, memories, skills, ethical orientations and tools. A unified name or interface can make those parts appear to be one continuous identity, even though capabilities and responsibilities may be distributed among them.
This perspective matters because evaluating only the apparent agent may miss how its component roles are assigned, what information they share and which tools they can use. The essay uses the concept to encourage a closer look at how an agent is put together; it does not establish a particular implementation or a standard method for auditing one.

Why institutions and governance matter
If capability is distributed, coordination becomes a central design problem. The authors point to “institutional scaffolds”: role-defined procedures, rules, precedents and feedback mechanisms that can organize human participants, AI agents or mixed groups. In this view, system outcomes depend not just on the abilities of individual participants but also on the structures that define their roles and interactions.
That makes governance part of the technical and social question, rather than an afterthought. Designers would need to consider who may act, how responsibilities are assigned, how decisions are reviewed and how feedback changes the system’s behavior. The essay argues for the importance of these structures, but does not provide a tested governance blueprint or show that institutional coordination alone would make advanced AI safe.

What the proposal does—and does not—establish
Artificial Symbiotic Intelligence is a conceptual frame for anticipating and designing for possible agentic futures. The essay does not report quantitative findings, prove that AGI will arise through social coordination or establish that this scenario will replace single-model accounts of the singularity. Its evolutionary comparisons are analogies, not measurements or forecasts validated by empirical results.
The useful distinction is therefore between a proposed lens and a demonstrated outcome. The authors invite a broader question—how people might orchestrate and live with interconnected AI systems—without claiming to know that this is how AGI will emerge.
