The name alone does not prove that a copy is safe, because malware can use the same filename. Check the complete path, the file’s digital signature and a current malware scan before you keep, repair or remove it.
What ArcChat.exe does
ArcChat.exe is associated with the chat and client functions of the Arc game platform. A normal installation is commonly found below C:Program Files (x86)Arc. It is not required for Windows to start, run the desktop or provide core operating-system functions.

File listings for ArcChat.exe show example sizes on Windows 7, Windows 10 and Windows 11, but those observations are not an official Arc file manifest. A different size is therefore not, by itself, proof of infection or corruption. Location, signature and scan results provide stronger evidence than the filename or size.

A copy can be legitimate when it belongs to an Arc installation and carries a valid publisher signature. A copy with the same name can also be malicious. Treat the file as unverified until you complete the checks below.

1. Check the running file’s location
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find ArcChat.exe under the Processes or Details tab.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location.
- Copy the full path somewhere you can review it before closing the window.

If ArcChat.exe is not running, search for the filename in File Explorer and inspect every copy. Multiple copies can exist; each one needs its own path and signature check.
2. Verify the digital signature
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the listed signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
- Review the signer and make sure it corresponds to Arc, ArcGames or the publisher of the Arc client you installed.
A missing, invalid or unrelated signature is a warning sign, particularly when the file is outside the expected Arc directory. A valid signature supports authenticity but does not replace a malware scan.
3. Scan before allowing or deleting anything
Use your installed, up-to-date security software to scan the individual file and then run a full system scan if the path, signature or behavior is suspicious. Microsoft Safety Scanner is another Microsoft malware-removal option for executable-related threats; download it only from Microsoft’s official channels and obtain a current copy before scanning.

If a scanner detects malware, let it quarantine or remove the threat and follow its remediation instructions. Update security signatures first when the product offers that option. Do not simply delete one executable and assume the system is clean: a malicious program may have changed other files, startup entries or executable associations.

4. Treat firewall prompts cautiously
Do not permit an unrecognized ArcChat.exe copy through Windows Firewall. Microsoft warns that allowing an unknown app to communicate can give attackers or malware an opening. If network access is genuinely required, allow the known Arc client application only when prompted and only after its path, signature and scan results are satisfactory. Do not open an inbound port merely to silence an error; opening a port is riskier than allowing a known app when that access is necessary.
Why ArcChat.exe errors occur
Corrupted or incomplete Arc files
An interrupted update, failed download initialization or damaged client file can make a legitimate Arc installation fail to start or repeatedly restart. Replacing one executable from a random download site can introduce a mismatched or infected file and can leave the rest of the installation inconsistent.
A malicious file using the ArcChat.exe name
Malware often borrows familiar names. A file in a Windows system directory, temporary location or downloads folder deserves more suspicion than one installed beneath the Arc directory, especially when its signature is missing or invalid. High CPU, unexplained network traffic, security alerts or repeated processes strengthen the case for isolation and a full scan, but none of those symptoms identifies malware on its own.
Client, game or network state left behind
ArcChat.exe may run while the Arc client is open, during chat or while the client initializes downloads. A stale client process can remain after a failed launch, and a damaged installation can cause repeated activity. Closing Arc completely, restarting Windows and using Arc’s own repair workflow are safer first responses than downloading replacement DLL or EXE files.

An unwanted Arc installation
If you no longer use Arc, an old installation can leave its executable present even though no game is being played. Use the official uninstaller rather than deleting the executable alone, so the client and its registered components are removed together.
How to fix ArcChat.exe errors on Windows
Step 1: Record evidence before changing files
- Open Task Manager and note whether ArcChat.exe is running, how many copies appear and whether the activity stops when Arc closes.
- Use Open file location and record the complete path.
- In Properties, record the signer and signature status.
- Note the exact error text, when it appears (startup, sign-in, chat or download initialization) and whether a security product has flagged the file.
These details determine whether you should repair Arc or treat the executable as a possible threat. Do not terminate a suspicious process and immediately relaunch it with administrator rights.
Step 2: Close Arc and retry once
- Exit the Arc client from its own menu if available.
- In Task Manager, confirm that Arc-related processes, including ArcChat.exe, have ended. End a process only when you recognize it as part of the Arc session and the normal exit did not close it.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch Arc again and check whether the same error returns.
A one-time initialization failure can clear after a clean restart. A recurring error should move to the repair or security steps rather than repeated force-closes.

Arc Games’ troubleshooting guidance documents repairing the Arc client from the Arc installation folder and restarting the client when installation or download initialization fails. Open the Arc folder that you verified in Step 1 and use the repair option or repair procedure supplied with that installation. Allow it to finish without replacing individual files from third-party sites.

After the repair completes, restart the Arc client. Test the action that originally failed, such as signing in, opening chat or beginning a download. If the repair reports that files cannot be replaced, close Arc and any game launcher that it started, then repeat the repair once. Continued failure points to a damaged installation, a blocked network operation or a security problem rather than a missing random DLL.
Step 4: Reinstall Arc through its official workflow
When repair does not restore a legitimate installation, uninstall and reinstall the Arc client from an official Arc installer. Arc Games documents this uninstall path:
- Open Start.
- Open the Gearbox Publishing folder.
- Open Arc.
- Select Uninstall Arc.
Restart Windows after uninstalling, then install a fresh copy from the official Arc distribution channel. Do not keep a replacement ArcChat.exe downloaded from a DLL or EXE repository. If the uninstaller is missing, use Windows’ installed-apps list to remove the Arc entry rather than manually deleting system folders.

Games installed through Arc can be removed from the Arc library after you sign in. Removing an unused game does not automatically prove that every Arc client component has been removed, so uninstall the Arc client separately when you no longer need the platform.
Step 6: Handle a malware detection as an incident
- Disconnect from sensitive accounts and avoid signing in through the affected Windows session until scanning is complete.
- Update your security product’s signatures.
- Run a full scan, not just a quick scan, and use Microsoft Safety Scanner if you need Microsoft’s additional malware-removal utility.
- Quarantine or remove detected threats through the security product.
- Restart and run a second scan if the product recommends it.
- Investigate other executable files, startup items and associations if the scanner reports broader changes.
Do not restore a quarantined ArcChat.exe merely because Arc stops working. First establish that the file came from the official Arc installation and has a valid signature; then repair or reinstall Arc using its vendor workflow.
Step 7: Remove an unnecessary firewall exception
Open Windows Security, choose Firewall & network protection, then review Allow an app through firewall. Remove an exception that points to an unrecognized ArcChat.exe path. Keep access for a verified Arc installation only when you need Arc’s online features. Never create a broad inbound rule or open a port just to bypass a launch message.

Do not delete the file while Arc is installed and you are still trying to use the client. Removing one executable can make the installation incomplete and leave the same error at the next launch. Repair Arc first, or uninstall Arc through the documented Start > Gearbox Publishing > Arc > Uninstall Arc path.

If a security product identifies the file as malicious, quarantine or remove it through that product and complete the recommended full-system investigation. Manual deletion is not a substitute for remediation. If the file is a verified Arc component and you have already uninstalled Arc, any leftover can be removed only after checking that no Arc game or launcher still depends on it.
What to do when ArcChat.exe uses high CPU or network bandwidth
First determine whether the activity occurs only while Arc is open, signing in, chatting or initializing a download. Close Arc and observe Task Manager again after a restart. If activity stops and the file is in the expected Arc directory with a valid signature, use the Arc repair workflow if the behavior returns. If activity continues while Arc is closed, appears from an unexpected path, or comes with security warnings, isolate the file and run a full malware scan before allowing network access.
There is no authoritative ArcChat.exe CPU or bandwidth threshold that proves a problem. Resource use must be interpreted alongside the path, signature, scan result and the Arc action taking place. Do not open ports or install a replacement executable as a way to suppress the usage.
A practical decision checklist
- Expected Arc path, valid signature, no detection: close and restart Arc, then repair the client if errors recur.
- Expected path but damaged installation: use Arc’s repair procedure; reinstall Arc if repair fails.
- Unexpected path or invalid signature: isolate the file and run an updated full malware scan.
- Security detection: quarantine or remove the threat, scan the entire system and investigate related executable changes.
- Arc no longer wanted: uninstall it through the official Arc workflow, then remove games from the Arc library after signing in.
- Firewall prompt for an unrecognized copy: deny it; never open a port merely to clear an error.
Final verdict
ArcChat.exe is normally part of the Arc game client, but the filename cannot establish trust. The decisive checks are the complete path, a valid digital signature and a current malware scan. For a clean Arc installation, repair or reinstall the client through Arc’s own procedures. For an unexpected or detected copy, isolate and scan the system instead of downloading a replacement or granting it firewall access.
