aq.exe is not a unique Windows system file. The same filename is used by unrelated legitimate programs—including the AQ programming-language project, the AQ Go chess engine and Supervisório LAquis—as well as by malicious software. You cannot decide whether a copy is safe from its name alone. Identify its full path, publisher, digital signature, hash and installation source before deleting or repairing it.
This guide shows how to identify an aq.exe safely, determine whether it belongs to software you installed, scan an unexplained copy, and fix crashes without downloading a replacement executable from an untrusted site.

What aq.exe is—and why the filename proves very little
Windows does not reserve aq.exe for one built-in component. An executable’s basename can be reused by completely different developers, so two files named aq.exe may have different code, publishers, versions, dependencies and purposes.

A Hybrid Analysis record for one Windows AQ.exe sample gave that specific hash a Threat Score of 100/100 on March 22, 2024. That is a result for the analyzed sample, not a prevalence rate and not a verdict on every file called aq.exe.

Is aq.exe safe?
It can be safe, unsafe or simply unwanted, depending on which program installed it. A copy in a known application folder with a valid signature from the expected publisher is materially different from an unsigned copy launched from a temporary directory. Even a plausible-looking path is not proof of safety, because malware can create folders with convincing names.
Evidence that supports a legitimate file
- You installed the associated AQ, AQ Go or LAquis software yourself, or your organization can identify the deployment.
- The complete path is inside that application’s installation directory rather than a random temporary, download or user-profile folder.
- File Properties shows a publisher and a valid digital signature that match the software you intended to install.
- The version and file size agree with the vendor’s installer or repository release.
- The file’s cryptographic hash matches a trusted copy from the same release, when the publisher provides one.
- The process behaves as the application requires—for example, an AQ Go engine may use the documented graphics or CUDA environment—rather than starting by itself with no related program open.
Warning signs
- You do not recognize the software that supposedly owns the file.
- The file appears in
%Temp%, a downloads folder, a newly created random directory or another location unrelated to installed software. - The signature is missing, invalid or issued to a publisher you cannot connect to the installation source.
- Defender or another reputable scanner identifies the file, or it repeatedly recreates itself after removal.
- It launches at startup, consumes unusual CPU or network resources, displays pop-ups, or causes browser and security-setting changes without an obvious application using it.
These signs justify an investigation and scan; they do not by themselves prove that the file is malware.
Identify aq.exe before you remove or repair it
Do not end the process or delete the file first. Record enough information to identify the owner and, if necessary, restore or report the exact sample.

1. Find the running file’s complete path
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On Windows 11, select Processes or Details; on Windows 10, select Processes or Details as appropriate.
- Locate
aq.exeorAQ.exe. Right-click it and choose Open file location. If the process is not running, search File Explorer for the exact filename and note every copy. - Copy the full path, file name, date modified and file size into a note. If you may need to submit the sample to your security provider, preserve the file until scanning instructions say otherwise.
Multiple copies are possible. Evaluate each path separately; one legitimate installation does not make every other copy safe.

2. Inspect Properties and the signature
- Right-click the file in File Explorer and choose Properties.
- On Details, record Product name, File description, Company, File version and Original filename. Missing fields are not conclusive, but unexpected values are useful clues.
- Open Digital Signatures, select a signature and choose Details. Windows should report that the signature is valid. Confirm that the signer corresponds to the application you installed.
- If there is no signature, an invalid signature or a publisher mismatch, treat the file as unverified and scan it before opening it again.
A valid signature indicates that the signed contents came from the signer and were not altered after signing; it does not guarantee that you wanted the software or that every component around it is safe.
3. Calculate a hash without executing the file
In PowerShell, use the recorded path in quotes:
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 -LiteralPath "C:fullpathaq.exe"Save the resulting SHA-256 value. Compare it only with a hash published for the same product release or with the hash supplied by your organization’s security team. A different hash means the files differ; it does not, by itself, classify either file as malicious.
For a traditional Command Prompt alternative:
certutil -hashfile "C:fullpathaq.exe" SHA2564. Trace the installation source
Use the path, version and file metadata together. AQ programming-language files should trace to the aq-org project; AQ Go engine files should trace to the ymgaq project; LAquis files should be inside a LAquis installation. Check the installer, application’s About screen, uninstall entry in Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11) or Settings > Apps > Apps & features (Windows 10), and any deployment records. Do not infer ownership from a folder name alone.
Scan an unexplained or detected aq.exe
If you cannot establish a legitimate owner, or security software has flagged the file, use Microsoft’s built-in protections before attempting repairs.

Update Defender, then run a full scan
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection, then choose Protection updates and select Check for updates.
- Return to Virus & threat protection, select Scan options, choose Full scan, and select Scan now.
- Allow the scan to finish. Review the detection name, affected path and action taken in Protection history.
Microsoft’s Security Intelligence guidance for Behavior:Win32/Gracing.AQ says Defender removes the threat and recommends updated definitions and a full scan to look for remnants. A detection name containing “AQ” is not a statement that every aq.exe is malicious; review the exact path and detection details.
Use Microsoft Defender Offline when the problem persists
For software that returns after a normal scan, interferes with security tools or appears to start before Windows is fully loaded, choose Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan > Scan now. Save open work first. Windows restarts into a separate scanning environment and then boots normally; review Protection history afterward.
Consider Smart App Control and reputation warnings
On supported Windows 11 installations, Smart App Control uses reputation and code signing to block malware, potentially unwanted apps and unknown unsigned code when it is in enforcement mode. Keep Windows and security intelligence current, and do not bypass a warning merely to make an unknown aq.exe run. Smart App Control is a preventative control, not a substitute for investigating the file’s origin.
Protect accounts while investigating
If compromise is plausible, disconnect the affected PC from the network when practical, use a different trusted device for password changes, and avoid entering credentials on the affected machine until scans are complete. Back up important personal files before major cleanup, but do not copy the suspicious executable into the backup.

Fix aq.exe errors after you identify the owner
There is no universal aq.exe replacement. The correct repair depends on the application that owns the file and on the exact Windows error.
When AQ, AQ Go or LAquis is legitimate but crashes
- Close the application and restart Windows. Reopen the program from its normal shortcut, not by double-clicking an unexplained copy found in another folder.
- Check the application’s own version and system requirements. For AQ Go, verify the documented GPU/CUDA runtime and graphics-driver requirements before changing files.
- Use the product’s trusted installer, maintenance option or uninstall-and-reinstall path. Download the installer only from the project’s or vendor’s official distribution channel that you already verified.
- Install the current supported release for your Windows edition, then test with a new project or a minimal configuration. Preserve user data and configuration files before uninstalling.
- If the error began after an update, use the vendor’s documented rollback or restore procedure rather than replacing aq.exe with a file from an executable-download site.
Repairing the owning application restores the correct dependencies and versions. Copying an aq.exe from another computer can create version mismatches, fail signature checks or introduce malware.
When Windows reports a missing DLL or side-by-side error
- Record the complete message and the application that displayed it.
- Repair or reinstall that application using its trusted installer so its matching runtime files are restored.
- Install Windows updates and the application updates recommended by its publisher.
- Do not download an individual DLL or aq.exe from a generic “DLL fixer” or file-archive site.
- If several unrelated programs fail, run the built-in system-file checks from an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannowRun the commands in that order, restart Windows, and test the original application again. These checks repair Windows component and system-file problems; they do not identify which third-party program owns aq.exe.

- In Settings > Apps > Startup (or Task Manager’s Startup apps tab), note the entry that launches the associated application.
- Temporarily disable that startup entry, restart, and confirm whether the crash stops.
- If the owning application is legitimate, update or repair it, then re-enable startup. If the entry points to a deleted, temporary or unknown path, leave it disabled while you complete the Defender scans.
- Check Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application for the crash time and faulting module. Treat the event as a clue, not proof that the named module is the cause.
When aq.exe uses excessive CPU, memory or disk
First establish whether the process belongs to an active AQ, AQ Go or LAquis task. A Go analysis may legitimately use substantial graphics or processor resources, while an unexplained background process deserves a scan. In Task Manager, note CPU, memory, disk and network activity, then stop the associated legitimate workload and update or configure that application according to its documentation. Do not terminate random processes or delete files as a performance experiment.
When Windows blocks access or says the file is in use
Do not take ownership of a system-looking file simply to force deletion. Reboot, run the scan from Windows Security, and use the owning application’s uninstall or repair option. If Defender quarantines the file, follow its remediation record; restore it only when you have verified the publisher and source and understand why it was detected.
Can you delete aq.exe?
Only after you know which program owns it and have checked whether that program needs it.

Deleting a legitimate executable can make its application fail, leave an incomplete installation or cause repeated repair prompts. Deleting malware without checking persistence mechanisms can also leave behind scheduled tasks, startup entries or related files.

- Keep Windows, Microsoft Defender security intelligence and the owning application updated.
- Install AQ, AQ Go, LAquis and other software only from the publisher’s verified distribution channel.
- Before opening an unexpected executable, check its path, signature and hash.
- Leave Smart App Control or equivalent reputation protection enabled when it fits your Windows configuration.
- Review Installed apps, Startup apps and scheduled tasks after removing a suspicious program.
- Maintain offline or otherwise protected backups of personal documents; test that they can be restored.
- Use a separate trusted device to change passwords if malware may have run while you were signed in.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
There is no reliable statistic showing how often aq.exe is malicious, and the filename has no universal publisher or purpose. The strongest conclusion comes from correlating provenance, path, signature, hash, version, dependencies and behavior. A legitimate AQ Go executable and an unrelated temporary-directory sample can share the same basename while requiring completely different actions. Treat the identity of the individual file—not the spelling of its name—as the question you are solving.
