AppSumo is a marketplace for software and other products made by third-party partners. Its best-known offers are lifetime deals, but “lifetime” means the life of the product—not the buyer’s life. Whether a deal is worth buying depends on its exact features and limits, refund terms, the vendor’s prospects, and any eligibility for shutdown credits.
What is AppSumo?
AppSumo is a marketplace where customers buy products developed by third-party partners, primarily digital software and membership services. The marketplace is not the product’s developer: a listing’s features, limits, availability and support depend on the partner and the terms of that specific offer.

AppSumo says it does not endorse or guarantee partner products. Its help materials also report that “only around 5%” of thousands of software tools launched on AppSumo have gone under, but the page gives no denominator, cutoff date or independent validation. “Will I still have this product when I’m 95?” AppSumo’s answer is no promise tied to your age: lifetime access means access for the lifetime of the product. So a lifetime deal is not the same as a guarantee that the company, service or particular features will exist forever. Treat the deal page’s included tier, usage limits and any stated conditions as part of what you are buying.
Three tips before buying an AppSumo deal
1. Read the deal’s refund terms
AppSumo says lifetime deals typically have a 60-day refund period unless the deal states otherwise, but refund windows vary by product and category. Some digital downloads cannot be refunded. 2. Redeem and test while the refund window is open
AppSumo recommends activating and testing a deal before its refund period ends. Check the functions you actually need, and verify that the product fits your workflow while the deal’s stated refund option is still available. AppSumo Help Center
3. Check usage limits and what happens if the product closes
For an AI tool, find out what uses credits, whether and when the allowance refreshes, and whether you need to provide or pay for an API key. For any deal, distinguish the product’s continued availability from AppSumo’s separate shutdown-credit policy: credit protection is conditional, and eligibility and coverage depend on the deal and purchase circumstances. Refunds and shutdown credits are not the same
A refund is about returning a purchase under the deal’s refund terms. We Got Your Back is a separate policy for qualifying product closures during a defined coverage period; it provides AppSumo credits, not an ordinary cash refund. The current policy describes these outcomes:

How to assess a specific deal
Compare the actual offer against your needs rather than treating “lifetime” or marketplace popularity as a quality guarantee. Before checkout, verify:
- Which features and tier limits are included, and whether they cover your intended use.
- The refund-window length and any exclusions on that deal page.
- For AI products, credit amounts, refresh schedules and possible API-key costs.
- Whether the vendor and product appear suitable for your needs, while accounting for the fact that continued availability is not guaranteed.
- Whether the exact listing qualifies for shutdown credits, the coverage duration and the amount specified by the policy.
AppSumo’s Help Center also says an estimated 92% of SaaS companies fail in their first three years. The page does not establish an independent dataset or methodology for that estimate; it should not be read as a prediction for an individual vendor.
