It scales up the M4 family for more demanding work, with configurations reaching a 14-core CPU and 20-core GPU. Apple announced it on October 30, 2024, and offered it in certain Mac mini and MacBook Pro configurations.
What Apple M4 Pro is
M4 Pro combines the main processing components of a Mac on one chip. Apple positions it for workloads such as software development, engineering, research, and creative production. The chip is built into a complete Mac, so shoppers choose a computer configuration that includes M4 Pro rather than purchasing the processor separately. Apple’s October 2024 announcement describes the chip and its intended workloads.

Apple discussed tasks such as building and testing apps across multiple Xcode simulators, graphics work with hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and running Apple Intelligence models on-device. Those examples indicate the kinds of work Apple has in mind; they do not establish that every application or task will run faster by the same amount.
M4 Pro specifications at a glance
| Feature | Apple’s stated specification | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Up to 14 cores: up to 10 performance cores and four efficiency cores | Core configuration varies; “up to” describes the maximum, not every M4 Pro Mac. |
| GPU | Up to 20 cores | Apple says the 20-core GPU offers twice the graphics performance of M4; this is Apple’s comparison, not an independent test. |
| Unified memory | Up to 64GB | This is the supported maximum, not a guarantee that a particular computer includes 64GB. |
| Memory bandwidth | 273GB/s | Apple says this is 75% more than M3 Pro and twice the bandwidth of an AI PC chip. Both comparisons are Apple’s. |
| Thunderbolt | Thunderbolt 5; transfer speeds up to 120Gb/s | Port count and placement depend on the Mac model. |
These figures come from Apple’s M4 Pro and M4 Max announcement. Maximums should not be read as a single standard configuration: check the specifications for the exact Mac you are considering.

Which Macs include M4 Pro?
Apple announced M4 Pro configurations in the 2024 Mac mini and MacBook Pro lineups. The computer you choose affects more than portability: ports, display support, and the available configurations belong to the Mac model, not to the chip in isolation.
- Mac mini (2024): Apple’s M4 Pro version has three Thunderbolt 5 ports and supports up to three 6K displays at 60Hz. These are specifications for that Mac mini model, not a universal feature of every M4 Pro Mac. See Apple’s Mac mini (2024) technical specifications.
- MacBook Pro (14-inch, 2024): Apple also listed M4 Pro as a configuration for this laptop. Consult Apple’s technical specifications for the 14-inch MacBook Pro (M4 Pro or M4 Max, 2024) for that model’s details.
Configurations and availability can change by model year and market. Confirm the current listing and exact configuration before buying.

How to interpret Apple’s performance claims
Apple published workload-specific comparisons for the 2024 Mac mini with M4 Pro. For example, Apple said its M4 Pro Mac mini performed spreadsheet calculations in Microsoft Excel up to 4× faster than a Mac mini with Intel Core i7. It also reported up to 9.4× faster scene-edit detection in Adobe Premiere Pro, up to 20× faster on-device speech-to-text transcription in MacWhisper, and up to 26× faster DNA sequencing basecalling in Oxford Nanopore MinKNOW, each against the Intel Core i7 Mac mini.
Against a Mac mini with M2 Pro, Apple reported up to 1.8× more audio effect plugins in Logic Pro, motion graphics renders to RAM up to 2× faster in Motion, and 3D renders up to 2.9× faster in Blender. These are Apple’s claims for named applications and comparison systems, not independent benchmark results or a universal speed ranking. The “up to” results should not be applied to other Macs, software, or workloads without comparable evidence. See Apple’s 2024 Mac mini announcement for the stated comparisons.

How to decide whether an M4 Pro Mac fits
Start with the work you do and the whole computer configuration, not the chip name alone. A useful comparison checks:
- CPU and GPU configuration: Compare the actual core counts in the Mac configurations under consideration.
- Memory: Check the included unified memory and whether it suits your applications; 64GB is a maximum supported amount, not the default.
- Connectivity and displays: Verify port generation, number and placement, and the display support listed for that exact Mac.
- Form factor: Choose between a desktop such as Mac mini and a laptop such as MacBook Pro based on where and how you work.
- Your workload: Treat Apple’s application-specific comparisons as evidence about those particular tasks, not as a substitute for results on your own software and workflow.
Apple’s cited releases provide chip specifications and vendor comparisons, but they do not supply a consistent independent test across workloads. Core counts or differently framed application claims alone therefore cannot establish a universal performance ranking.
