AnonymizerLauncher.exe is not a Windows system file. The best-documented copy belongs to AnonymizerGadget, an unwanted or adware-related program. A filename alone cannot identify every copy, however: confirm the complete path, publisher signature, hash, startup registration, proxy behavior and antivirus result before deciding what to do.

If the file is connected to AnonymizerGadget, remove that parent program through Windows, restart, run a full security scan and then clean any leftover startup, scheduled-task, proxy or folder entries. Do not download a replacement executable from an unverified EXE or DLL website.

What anonymizerlauncher.exe is

Windows does not require anonymizerlauncher.exe. BleepingComputer documents an AnonymizerGadget startup item that launches:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
"C:Program Files (x86)AnonymizerGadgetAnonymizerLauncher.exe" /S /startup

That entry is described as an undesirable program added by the AnonymizerGadget potentially unwanted program. Malwarebytes has also recorded the detection Adware.AnonymizerGadget.PrxySvrRST for copies in both of these locations:

  • C:Users{username}AppDataRoamingAGDatabinAnonymizerLauncher.exe
  • C:Program Files (x86)AnonymizerGadgetAnonymizerLauncher.exe

The same case included proxy-enable values and companion files. A SpyHunter removal report updated in 2026 lists one sample as 347,784 bytes with MD5 7bf1e676a7a52bd14bceb0e0811805d6. That size and hash are comparison indicators for that sample, not proof that every file with the same name is identical.

What the command-line switches mean

The documented command ends in /S /startup. Those switches indicate a silent or startup-oriented launch rather than a normal Windows component. They also explain why the process may appear immediately after sign-in even when you did not open it yourself. Record the complete command line because a path alone may not reveal whether the executable was launched by a startup value, an installer or a scheduled task.

Why the name is not enough

Malicious and legitimate software can use the same basename. A copy in an unexpected user-profile folder, one without a valid signature, or one that changes proxy settings deserves more suspicion than a signed file installed with a known application. File.info likewise notes that the executable is not part of Windows, that risk depends partly on location, and that counterfeit copies can exist even when an original is signed. Its risk percentages are opinion estimates, not measured infection rates.

Location is useful context, not a verdict. The documented AnonymizerGadget locations include both Program Files (x86) and the per-user AppDataRoamingAGDatabin directory. A file in either location still needs to be checked against its signature, hash, parent application and security scan. Conversely, a copy elsewhere should not be trusted simply because its name matches.

Is anonymizerlauncher.exe safe or a virus?

Treat a copy associated with AnonymizerGadget, the AnonymizerGadget Run value, the AGProxyCheck scheduled task, proxy-reset behavior or a matching security detection as unwanted until you have established otherwise. That does not mean every file carrying this name is automatically a virus. The evidence supports a conditional assessment based on provenance and behavior.

Microsoft’s unwanted-software principles emphasize that software should not mislead users, falsely claim to be Microsoft software, or prevent users from controlling whether it starts and stops. Use those principles when evaluating consent, persistence and publisher identity. Ask who installed the program, whether you were clearly told it would run at startup, and whether you can disable it through normal Windows controls.

How to verify a copy before deleting it

Do not open, replace or whitelist an unknown executable just to make an error disappear. Record the evidence first, then scan it. If the process is active, avoid terminating it until you have noted its location and command line; those details can be lost after the process exits.

  1. Locate the running file. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc. On the Details tab, look for anonymizerlauncher.exe, right-click it and choose Open file location. If it is not running, open Task Manager > Startup apps, select the related entry and use its context menu to locate or inspect it. Record the complete path and any command-line switches.
  2. Check the file properties. Right-click the file, choose Properties and review General, Details and Digital Signatures. An absent, invalid or unexpected signer increases the risk. A valid signature is useful evidence but is not a complete safety verdict because a signed original can be copied or a different file can masquerade under the same name. Check whether the signer matches the application you knowingly installed, not merely whether a signature tab exists.
  3. Calculate a hash when comparison is useful. In PowerShell, run Get-FileHash -Algorithm MD5 "C:fullpathAnonymizerLauncher.exe" and compare the result only with a trusted incident record or vendor report. The 347,784-byte MD5 sample above is an indicator for that report, not a universal signature. A changed file size or hash means the samples differ; it does not by itself prove that the new file is safe or malicious.
  4. Inspect persistence. Look for an AnonymizerGadget value under the Windows Run startup locations, an AGProxyCheck task in Task Scheduler, and directories named AnonymizerGadget or AGData. Note whether Windows proxy settings have been enabled or changed. Check both the current-user and machine-wide locations because removing one does not necessarily remove the other.
  5. Scan before making changes. In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection, update protection intelligence and run a Full scan. You can also right-click the file and choose the Microsoft Defender scan command when available. A second opinion from a reputable, current security product such as Malwarebytes can help confirm a detection, but do not run several real-time products simultaneously.

How to interpret a signature and hash

A digital signature helps identify the publisher and shows whether the file changed after signing, but it does not guarantee that you wanted the software or that the publisher is reputable. An unsigned file is not automatically malware either; it is simply harder to attribute. Hashes are exact fingerprints for one file version. They are most useful when the comparison source identifies the file’s size, location and date, as the 347,784-byte sample does. Never treat a matching name, size or hash as permission to execute an unknown download.

Why it keeps starting with Windows

The documented startup command uses the /S /startup switches, which indicates that the program was registered to launch automatically. The AnonymizerGadget case also associates the executable with a Run value and an AGProxyCheck scheduled task. Either mechanism can make the process reappear after a reboot; a proxy-setting change can make the problem visible as redirected or unexpectedly slow web traffic.

Startup entries can survive a partial uninstall. Antivirus quarantine may remove the executable while leaving a Run value that still points to the old path. In that situation Windows may display a missing-file warning even though the original program is gone. Removing the orphaned registration, rather than restoring the executable, is the appropriate fix.

Disable the startup item temporarily

  1. Open Task Manager > Startup apps.
  2. Select the AnonymizerGadget or anonymizerlauncher.exe entry and choose Disable.
  3. Restart Windows and check whether the error or unwanted launch stops.

Disabling startup does not remove the program. Use it as a containment step while you uninstall and scan. If the entry is marked as an unknown publisher, treat that as a reason to investigate its path rather than as proof of infection.

How to remove AnonymizerGadget safely

1. Uninstall the parent application

  1. In Windows 11 or Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps (called Apps & features in some Windows 10 builds).
  2. Search for AnonymizerGadget, Anonymizer or another program you do not recognize that installed the file. Select its menu and choose Uninstall, then follow the removal wizard.
  3. If it is not listed in Settings, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select the entry and choose Uninstall.
  4. Do not remove a different application merely because its folder contains a similarly named file. Confirm the publisher, install date and path first.

Microsoft’s uninstall guidance directs people who are trying to remove malware to Windows Security or their antivirus product. Uninstalling the parent program is preferable to deleting only the executable because the installer may have created startup values, tasks, proxy settings and companion files. If the uninstaller asks to close a browser or restart, save work and follow that request rather than force-deleting files mid-removal.

2. Restart and run a full scan

Restart after uninstalling so locked processes and services are unloaded. Then update Windows Security and run a full scan. Quarantine or remove detections according to the scanner’s instructions, and restart again if it requests one. A full scan is preferable to a quick scan when remnants may be in user-profile folders or scheduled-task locations.

3. Check startup registrations

Open Task Manager > Startup apps again. If an AnonymizerGadget entry remains, disable it and confirm that its file location is the old program directory. You can also inspect the following registry locations with regedit:

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
  • On 64-bit Windows, the 32-bit software view under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareWOW6432NodeMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun

Before editing, create a restore point or use File > Export in Registry Editor to save the relevant key. Delete only a value you have positively identified as AnonymizerGadget or its launcher; changing unrelated startup values can prevent other programs from working. If you are unsure which value is responsible, leave it disabled and ask a qualified administrator rather than deleting entries at random.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Remove the scheduled task

  1. Press Start, type Task Scheduler and open it.
  2. Choose Task Scheduler Library and look for AGProxyCheck or a task whose action points to the AnonymizerGadget or AGData folders.
  3. Open the task’s Actions and Details tabs to verify the path. If it is clearly part of the unwanted installation, choose Disable, then Delete.

Do not delete a task solely because its name contains “proxy.” Verify the executable path and publisher first. Legitimate VPNs, enterprise security tools and school networks may use scheduled tasks and proxy settings for valid reasons.

5. Check proxy settings

Open Settings > Network & internet > Proxy. Review both automatic and manual proxy sections. If a proxy was enabled by AnonymizerGadget and you do not use one intentionally, turn off the unwanted manual setting and remove an unfamiliar script address. If your organization, school or VPN requires a proxy, obtain the correct values from its administrator instead of resetting them blindly. After changing the setting, test a few trusted websites and confirm that browser traffic behaves normally.

6. Clean residual folders only after scanning

After the uninstall and scan, inspect the documented AnonymizerGadget and AGData directories. If they are empty remnants belonging only to the removed program, delete them. If Windows says a file is in use, restart and scan again rather than forcing deletion. Preserve suspicious files for your security product’s quarantine workflow when possible. Empty folders are usually harmless, but keeping them can make a future investigation confusing, so remove them only after confirming they are not shared by another installed program.

Fixing anonymizerlauncher.exe errors

“AnonymizerLauncher.exe not found” or a startup pop-up

This message commonly follows antivirus quarantine, a partial uninstall or a broken Run entry. Replacing the missing file is the wrong first response.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Disable the related entry in Task Manager > Startup apps.
  2. Uninstall AnonymizerGadget from Settings or Control Panel.
  3. Restart Windows and run a full security scan.
  4. Inspect the Run keys and Task Scheduler for stale references, and remove only entries that point to the removed AnonymizerGadget or AGData paths.
  5. Restart once more and confirm that the pop-up is gone.

There is no vendor-maintained error-code table establishing a separate repair procedure for this executable. A missing-file message is therefore a reason to remove the orphaned launch reference, not to download an identically named replacement. If a different application legitimately depended on the file, its own installer or support channel should provide the repair package.

The file is blocked by Windows

Microsoft Attachment Manager guidance says to verify where a downloaded file came from and scan it before opening it. If you downloaded anonymizerlauncher.exe from an unknown mirror, leave it blocked and delete or quarantine it. The Unblock button in Properties should be used only for a file from a source you trust and have independently verified; unblocking an unknown copy can make execution easier without solving the underlying problem.

The process returns after removal

A return after reboot usually means that a persistence mechanism or companion component remains. Repeat the checks for both 32-bit and 64-bit Run locations, the AGProxyCheck task, proxy settings, and the AnonymizerGadget/AGData folders. Run another full scan in case a separate installer restored the files. If the entry is recreated by an account or organizational policy, ask the device administrator to investigate rather than repeatedly deleting it.

Browser traffic changes after cleanup

If websites remain redirected, unusually slow or unable to connect, inspect both manual and automatic proxy configuration again. A leftover script address can affect browsers even after the executable is gone. Do not overwrite a company, school or VPN proxy with guessed values; document the current settings and obtain the approved configuration from the responsible administrator.

Can you delete anonymizerlauncher.exe directly?

Sometimes, but direct deletion alone is incomplete and can leave the Run value, scheduled task or proxy configuration behind. It can also remove a file before your security software has a chance to classify it. The safer sequence is to document the path, scan, uninstall the parent program, restart, remove verified leftovers and then confirm that no persistence remains. If the file is in a folder shared with another application, deleting it manually could break that application, which is another reason to identify the parent program first.

How to assess cleanup tools

If Windows Security does not resolve the detection, compare security products on factors that matter for this case:

  • detection quality and how frequently signatures and behavior rules are updated;
  • real-time protection versus on-demand scanning;
  • quarantine, rollback and restore controls;
  • effect on startup and system resources;
  • support for the Windows edition you use; and
  • whether the report explains the detected file, Run entry, scheduled task and proxy artifacts.

No authoritative comparative score establishes one product as the universal winner for anonymizerlauncher.exe. Keep one real-time antivirus active, use an additional scanner on demand when needed, and read each detection before quarantining a file used by a legitimate application. A product that explains why it flagged the executable and identifies related persistence is more useful than one that reports only a filename.

Preventing a repeat infection or unwanted install

  • Install software only from the publisher’s official distribution channel and choose custom or advanced setup when available.
  • Decline optional browser extensions, proxy tools and bundled offers you did not request.
  • Keep Windows, browsers and security software updated.
  • Review Startup apps and installed programs after installing unfamiliar freeware.
  • Do not trust a familiar filename, icon or digital signature without checking its path and behavior.
  • Keep a current backup so you can restore personal files if a cleanup operation goes wrong.

Pay particular attention to installers that offer a “privacy,” “anonymizer” or “connection” utility alongside another download. Read each setup screen, avoid accepting optional components by default and record the publisher and install location. After installation, verify that no unexpected startup item, scheduled task or proxy setting appeared.

After you complete the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut that can address certain common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, review startup and crash information, and check for some vulnerabilities. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, with a free trial by category for at least two days before a paid subscription.

Bottom line

AnonymizerLauncher.exe is not a Windows component, and the documented AnonymizerGadget copies should be treated as unwanted. Verify the path, signature, hash and behavior; uninstall the parent program; restart and scan; then remove verified Run, Task Scheduler, proxy and folder remnants. Never download an unverified replacement executable simply because Windows displays a missing-file error.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is anonymizerlauncher.exe a Windows system file?

No. It is not required by Windows. The best-documented copies are associated with the AnonymizerGadget potentially unwanted program.

Is anonymizerlauncher.exe a virus?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I delete anonymizerlauncher.exe?

Do not delete it blindly. First record its path, scan it, uninstall AnonymizerGadget, restart and then remove only verified leftovers. Direct deletion can leave startup, scheduled-task and proxy settings behind.

Why does anonymizerlauncher.exe start with Windows?

The documented installation uses a Run startup value and the /S /startup command switches. The related AGProxyCheck scheduled task can provide another persistence path.

How do I fix an AnonymizerLauncher.exe not found error?

Disable the stale Startup apps entry, uninstall the parent program, restart, scan, and remove verified AnonymizerGadget references from both Run locations and Task Scheduler. Do not download a replacement EXE.

Where should I look for related files?

Check the documented AnonymizerGadget folder under Program Files (x86) and the per-user AppDataRoamingAGDatabin folder, along with the Run value, AGProxyCheck task and proxy settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the 347,784-byte MD5 hash a universal signature?

No. It identifies one sample listed in a 2026 removal report. Use it only as a comparison indicator alongside the file’s path, size, publisher and scan result.

Should I click Unblock if Windows blocks the file?

Only when the file came from a source you trust and you independently verified it. An unknown download should remain blocked and be scanned, quarantined or deleted.

The Bottom Line

AnonymizerLauncher.exe is not a Windows component. If it is connected to AnonymizerGadget, remove the parent program, restart, scan and clean verified startup, scheduled-task, proxy and folder remnants. Never download an unverified replacement executable.
