A filename by itself is not proof of safety, however: anki.exe can fail because of outdated Windows components, security-software interference, duplicate installations, display problems, or damaged profiles and add-ons. Protect or sync your collection first, then repair the installation in a controlled order.
What anki.exe is and why Windows reports it
Anki is a free, open-source spaced-repetition flashcard application. On Windows, anki.exe is the executable that starts the desktop program. Windows may show the filename in Task Manager, an error dialog, an antivirus alert, or an event log when the process starts, stops, or crashes.

The filename is not a certificate of identity. Another program, a damaged copy, or malware could use the same name. The meaningful questions are where the file came from, where it is stored, whether its behavior matches Anki, and what a reputable security scan reports. Anki’s official download site is the appropriate source for a fresh installer; random executable-download pages and replacement DLL sites are not substitutes.
Current Anki documentation identifies %LOCALAPPDATA%ProgramsAnki as the default Windows program directory. Some older installations or custom setups may use another directory, so a different path is a reason to investigate rather than automatic proof of infection.

How to check whether your copy is trustworthy
Perform these checks before attempting a repair that changes files. They distinguish a normal Anki installation from a renamed or tampered executable.
- Open Anki if it is running, press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager, and locate the Anki process. - Right-click the process and choose Open file location. Compare the folder with the documented default,
%LOCALAPPDATA%ProgramsAnki. A custom folder may be legitimate if you selected it during installation; an unexpected temporary, download, or system folder deserves closer examination. - Right-click
anki.exe, choose Properties, and inspect the available version, publisher, and digital-signature information. A missing signature is a reason to investigate, not conclusive proof that the file is malicious. - Run Windows Security or another reputable, fully updated scanner against the file and its containing folder. If the scanner flags the copy, quarantine it and do not add an exclusion merely to make Anki launch.
- When provenance is uncertain, stop using that executable. After protecting your collection, uninstall Anki and download a new installer from the official Anki website.
Do not trust a replacement anki.exe sent by another person or downloaded as a standalone file. A matching filename can still contain the wrong version, altered code, or a bundled threat.
Protect your cards before changing Anki
Startup repairs can involve uninstalling programs, removing duplicate files, changing profile data, or reinstalling. Those actions should not be your first move if the collection exists only on this computer.

Confirm that the sync finishes rather than assuming a click on the button was enough.
- If Anki will not open, make a separate copy of the collection and profile data before uninstalling, deleting folders, or experimenting with data locations. Keep the copy in a different folder or on external storage.
- Do not delete a profile to test a theory. A clean test profile can help isolate a profile problem, but it should be created only after the original data is protected.
This precaution separates an executable repair from a collection-recovery problem. If the program later starts normally, you can return to the protected copy only if needed.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
Anki failures do not all mean the same thing. Note the exact message, whether a window appears, and whether the failure began after an update, security alert, display change, or add-on installation.

Exact diagnosis depends on the Windows error text, Anki version, and file path. If you need outside support, record those three details along with what changed immediately before the failure.
Repair anki.exe in the safest order
1. Install the latest Anki release
Anki’s manual recommends installing the latest version when the program fails to appear. Download the current Windows installer from the official Anki website, close any Anki processes, and run the installer. Updating replaces program files without requiring you to remove your collection first.

The release record also documents security fixes in current releases. Remaining on an old build can leave both startup defects and known security problems unresolved, so note the version shown in Properties or in Anki’s own about information after the update.
2. Apply Windows updates and restart
Windows components used by desktop applications can be outdated even when Anki itself is current. Open Settings and go to Windows Update; install the updates offered for your edition, restart when requested, and test Anki again. On older Windows versions, use the update control panel available on that release.
A restart matters after both Windows and security-software updates because pending file replacements and background services can otherwise leave the old state in memory. Do not interpret one unsuccessful launch before restarting as proof that the update failed.

3. Check antivirus and firewall interference
Security software can block a legitimate executable, prevent it from writing profile data, or quarantine one of its files. Open the security product’s protection or quarantine history and look for anki.exe or an Anki-related file. Compare the recorded path with the location you verified in Task Manager.

- If the alert concerns the verified official installation, submit the file to the security vendor’s review process or consult its documentation before restoring it.
- Do not disable protection permanently and do not create an exclusion simply because the application will not start. An exclusion can hide a real problem.
- If a firewall prompt appears, read the program name and path carefully before allowing access. A prompt for a different executable is not an Anki permission request.
After reviewing the log, update the security product and run a full scan. A clean result does not prove that every copy of anki.exe is safe, so provenance and location still matter.
4. Remove duplicate Anki installations
Anki’s manual warns that multiple installations can leave the program non-working. Old files may remain in one directory while a shortcut starts another version, producing mismatched components or confusing updates.
- Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows) to list Anki entries.
- Write down which profile or collection must be preserved, and make the backup described above if you have not already done so.
- Uninstall every Anki entry rather than removing only the copy shown by one shortcut.
- Restart Windows so locked program files and old processes are released.
- Install Anki once from the official website, then launch it from the new installation and verify the version.
Do not manually delete profile data while removing duplicate program folders. The objective is one clean program installation, not an empty collection.
5. Test safe mode for add-on and profile problems
The Anki file documentation describes holding Shift while starting Anki to enter safe mode. Safe mode is a diagnostic launch: it helps determine whether an add-on, custom profile setting, or related user data is stopping normal startup.

- Close Anki and end any remaining Anki process in Task Manager.
- Hold Shift while launching Anki and keep holding it until the safe-mode prompt or window appears.
- If Anki opens, do not immediately re-enable everything. Close it, start normally, and disable recently installed or updated add-ons one at a time.
- Launch after each change. When normal startup returns, the last disabled add-on or profile change is the leading suspect.
If safe mode also fails, add-ons are less likely to be the primary cause. Continue with Windows, security, installation, and console checks instead of deleting the profile.
6. Use the console executable for the exact error
Anki’s manual documents a console executable that can expose terminal output when the graphical program closes without explanation. Open the Anki installation folder you verified, locate the documented console launcher, and start it from Windows. Keep the terminal visible and copy the complete error text, including the first line and any file path.
Console output is evidence, not a command to download a missing DLL or edit random registry entries. Search the exact message in Anki’s official support documentation or provide it when asking for help. Include the Anki version, Windows edition, installation path, and whether safe mode worked.
7. Reinstall only after the collection is protected
A clean reinstall is appropriate when the executable is damaged, the source is uncertain, or duplicate installations continue to conflict.
- Finish syncing or copying the collection and profile data.
- Uninstall all Anki entries from Windows’ installed-apps list.
- Restart Windows.
- Download a fresh Windows installer from the official Anki website, rather than reusing an old installer or a standalone executable.
- Install once, launch the new copy, and verify that the file location is expected.
- Reconnect or restore the protected collection only after the clean program opens normally.
If the newly installed program works with a new test profile but fails with the original profile, the executable is probably not the only issue. Keep the original backup intact and investigate profile data or add-ons separately.

Treat a detection as a security event until you can establish provenance. Do not click through a warning simply because the filename looks familiar.
- Quarantine the flagged copy through Windows Security or your security vendor.
- Record the full path, detection name, and time of the alert.
- Run a complete scan and update the security definitions first if the product offers an update.
- Check whether another copy of Anki exists in a different directory or under another Windows account.
- After protecting your collection, uninstall the questionable installation and obtain a clean installer from the official Anki website.
Never replace a quarantined executable with one copied from a forum, file-sharing service, or “DLL fix” site. If the official installer is repeatedly detected, preserve the detection details and ask the security vendor and Anki support to review the specific file and version.
Display and hardware-related startup failures
The Anki manual lists display issues among possible reasons the program fails to appear. This is especially relevant when the failure began after changing monitors, graphics settings, remote-desktop software, or display drivers. First complete the general update and safe-mode checks. If safe mode opens while normal mode does not, the difference points toward a profile, add-on, or display initialization setting rather than a missing executable.

A black or invisible window is not the same as a process that exits immediately. Use Task Manager to see whether anki.exe remains running. If it stays active, try disconnecting an extra monitor or ending a remote session, then launch again. Record what changed; avoid deleting profile files merely because the window is not visible.
Common approaches that make the problem worse
- Downloading a replacement DLL: DLL sites cannot establish that the file matches your Anki build or Windows edition and may introduce malware.
- Running a random anki.exe: A matching name does not prove that the executable is official or compatible with your collection.
- Adding antivirus exclusions immediately: This suppresses a warning before you know whether the file is legitimate.
- Deleting the profile to force a clean start: This can remove the data you are trying to preserve. Test safe mode and create a backup first.
- Keeping several versions installed: Multiple copies can create path and component conflicts. One verified installation is easier to diagnose.
- Repeating the same launch without recording evidence: Capture the exact message, path, version, and safe-mode result so each next step tests a different cause.

No single step repairs every anki.exe failure. The safest path is progressive: preserve the collection, verify the executable, update both layers, isolate add-ons, remove duplicate installations, and reinstall only when the evidence supports it.
What to include when asking for help
Support becomes much faster when the report contains reproducible facts instead of only “anki.exe crashed.” Include:
- The exact Windows edition and whether it is fully updated.
- The Anki version and the path shown by Open file location.
- The complete error text or console output, copied exactly.
- Whether Anki opens while holding Shift.
- Whether the issue affects every profile or only one.
- Any recent Anki update, Windows update, add-on installation, display change, or security alert.
- Whether you have completed a sync or made a separate collection backup.
These details let a helper distinguish a program-file problem from a profile, add-on, display, or security-software problem without asking you to repeat destructive steps.
