The result demonstrated molecular-scale thermoelectricity, not a practical power generator.
What does “organic electricity generator” mean?
In this headline, “organic” means carbon-based molecules—not organic waste, microbes, or a living organism. “Hot stuff” refers to heat-driven voltage generation through the Seebeck effect: when two sides of a material or junction are at different temperatures, a voltage can develop across it.

The 2007 work by Pramod Reddy, Sung-Yeon Jang, Rachel A. Segalman, and Arun Majumdar applied that principle to molecular junctions. Individual molecules bridged gold electrodes, and the researchers measured the voltage associated with a temperature difference across each junction. The peer-reviewed study appeared in Science in 2007: “Thermoelectricity in molecular junctions”.
What did the researchers measure?
At room temperature, the team measured the Seebeck coefficients of three gold–molecule junctions. The coefficient describes the voltage response per degree of temperature difference. The study reported positive values and interpreted their sign as p-type, or hole, conduction in these heterojunctions.
#1 Best Overall
| Molecule | Structure | Room-temperature Seebeck coefficient |
|---|---|---|
| 1,4-benzenedithiol (BDT) | One phenyl unit | +8.7 ± 2.1 μV/K |
| 4,4′-dibenzenedithiol | Two phenyl units | +12.9 ± 2.2 μV/K |
| 4,4″-tribenzenedithiol | Three phenyl units | +14.2 ± 3.2 μV/K |
These are the junction coefficients reported by Reddy and colleagues in their 2007 Science paper. The larger measured coefficient for the three-phenyl molecule does not by itself make it the best generator: the measurements do not compare complete devices or establish usable output power, conversion efficiency, durability, or ease of manufacture.
How was heat applied?
The researchers coated gold electrodes with the molecules and heated one side to create a temperature difference. The University of California, Berkeley announcement says the largest temperature difference tested was 30°C. This describes the laboratory measurement setup—not a packaged generator’s operating range or performance. Berkeley’s account is available in its announcement of the experiment.

Does the experiment show that organic molecules can generate useful power?
It shows that a temperature difference across an organic molecular junction can produce a measurable thermoelectric response. It does not show that the tested junctions could deliver useful power as a practical generator. The paper presented the work as a way to investigate molecular electronic structure and explore thermoelectric energy conversion; the contemporary Chemistry World report also noted expert caution that the tested molecules were far from efficient energy materials.

Berkeley quoted co-author Arun Majumdar describing inexpensive organic molecules and metal nanoparticles as a potential route to low-cost, plastic-like generators and refrigerators. That was a prospect, not a report that such products had been built or sold. The contemporary report is Chemistry World’s February 2007 coverage.

- Demonstrates the Seebeck Effect (Thermoelectric Effect): Shows how heat energy is directly converted into electricity using a thermocouple and aluminum conductors. Students observe voltage generation created by a temperature gradient.
- Clear Hot vs. Cold Water Demonstration: Designed to be immersed in 2–3" of water with each aluminum leg placed in separate cups (2 clear cups included). Equal temperatures produce no output — a strong temperature difference causes the fan to spin.
- Built-In Data Monitoring Capability: Features 4mm input/output terminals and a switch to redirect electricity to a meter for measurement. Allows students to monitor voltage output and analyze temperature differential vs. EMF production.
- Real-World Energy Application Example: Illustrates the same thermoelectric principles used in deep space probes such as NASA Voyager missions. Silent operation with no moving engine parts — an excellent example of applied renewable energy technology.
- Complete Classroom Teaching Kit: Includes thermoelectric generator assembly, fan, two clear immersion cups, and detailed instructions with sample student questions. Ideal for physics labs covering energy conversion, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and alternative energy.
Why was the result important?
The significance was the measurement at molecular scale: it connected a temperature difference to a voltage response through a single-molecule junction and compared that response across related molecules. Berkeley co-lead author Pramod Reddy called it “a significant proof of concept, and the first step in organic molecular thermoelectricity.” The experiment was an early demonstration and measurement advance, not a ready-made energy technology.
The materials rationale was that organic molecules could be abundant and easier to process. Whether that promise can translate into a useful generator depends on far more than the Seebeck coefficient: a device also needs suitable electrical and thermal properties, reliable contacts, and performance that holds up in an assembled system. The 2007 measurements alone do not establish those device-level qualities.

Is there an organic molecular generator to buy?
The 2007 paper and Berkeley announcement describe a laboratory experiment, not a retail generator or consumer kit. They do not establish a commercially available product based on these molecular junctions.
