What Is an NBFC and How Is It Different From a Bank in India?

An NBFC (non-banking financial company) is a company that carries out specified financial activities such as lending, investing in securities, leasing or hire-purchase. It may provide credit much like a bank, but it does not have all of a bank’s permissions. In particular, an NBFC cannot accept demand deposits, is not part of the payment and settlement system, cannot issue cheques drawn on itself, and its deposits are not covered by DICGC insurance.

The label “NBFC” covers several different regulatory categories. Before borrowing, investing or handing over money, check the company’s exact category, current RBI registration and the permissions that apply to the specific product.

What is an NBFC?

NBFC stands for non-banking financial company. In India, it is a company engaged in financial business defined under the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Act and related rules. RBI’s plain-language FAQ, updated on January 10, 2017, describes activities such as loans and advances, acquiring securities, leasing, hire-purchase, insurance business and chit business, subject to the legal exclusions and tests in force.

A company is not treated as an NBFC merely because it calls itself a lender or offers a finance-related app. RBI’s framework looks at the nature of the company’s business. The FAQ describes the familiar “50-50 test” for principal business: broadly, more than half of total assets should be financial assets and more than half of gross income should come from those financial assets. The 50-50 description is from the 2017 FAQ; a legal or entity-specific decision should be checked against the directions currently applicable to that company.

The definition excludes companies whose principal business is specified non-financial activity, such as agriculture, industrial activity, trading in goods other than securities, providing services or dealing in immovable property. The precise statutory treatment can depend on the company’s facts and applicable exemptions, so the test should not be used as a substitute for checking RBI’s current position.

NBFC is an umbrella category, not one standard business model

RBI’s 2025 Handbook on Regulations at a Glance lists multiple NBFC categories. The category determines which regulatory directions, capital or net-owned-fund requirements, conduct rules and permitted activities apply. Two companies described as NBFCs can therefore offer very different products and face different restrictions.

Examples of NBFC categories

  • Investment and credit companies: companies whose principal business can include providing loans or advances and investing in securities, subject to their applicable regulatory framework.
  • Microfinance institutions: NBFCs focused on qualifying small-value, collateral-free or otherwise regulated microfinance lending. Their borrower, pricing and conduct requirements are category-specific.
  • Peer-to-peer (P2P) lending platforms: intermediaries that facilitate connections between lenders and borrowers under the P2P framework. A P2P platform is not the same thing as a bank taking deposits and lending from its own balance sheet.
  • Account aggregators: consent-based financial-data intermediaries. Their role is to facilitate sharing of financial information with the customer’s permission, not to operate as ordinary deposit-taking banks.
  • Housing finance companies: housing-focused finance companies regulated under the applicable statutory and RBI framework. The RBI’s April 1, 2025 master circular states that NBFCs, including housing finance companies, must be registered under the applicable provisions.

Other classifications and sub-categories exist. Never infer a company’s permissions from the word “NBFC” alone; read the registration details and product terms.

How is an NBFC different from a bank?

Banks and NBFCs can both provide loans, but the legal permissions and protections are not identical. The following comparison reflects the distinctions set out in RBI’s FAQ and should be read as a regulatory comparison, not a claim that one type is always safer, cheaper or better.

Question Bank NBFC
Can it accept demand deposits? Banks operate under the banking framework that permits eligible deposit accounts, including demand deposits. Cannot accept demand deposits.
Is it part of the payment and settlement system? Eligible banks participate under the applicable payment-system rules. RBI’s FAQ says an NBFC does not form part of the payment and settlement system.
Can it issue cheques drawn on itself? A bank can provide cheque facilities under its banking permissions. Cannot issue cheques drawn on itself.
Are deposits covered by DICGC insurance? The DICGC deposit-insurance facility is available to covered bank depositors, subject to the scheme’s terms and limits. NBFC deposits are not covered by DICGC deposit insurance.
Does it need regulatory authorisation? Banks require their own banking authorisation and ongoing prudential supervision. RBI says an NBFC cannot commence or carry on NBFC business without registration under section 45-IA, subject to the statutory scope and exemptions that apply. The 2025 RBI circular also states that NBFCs, including housing finance companies, must be registered under applicable provisions.
What services can it offer? Services follow the bank’s licence and banking regulations, which can include deposit accounts, payments and lending. Services depend on the NBFC’s exact category and permissions; an NBFC may lend or invest without being allowed to offer ordinary bank accounts or payment services.

The table does not establish that every bank offers every service or that every NBFC is prohibited from every payment-related activity. It captures the headline distinctions in the cited RBI FAQ. For a particular product, read the provider’s licence information, terms and current RBI directions.

Can an NBFC take deposits?

An NBFC cannot accept demand deposits. A demand deposit is money that the customer can withdraw on demand, such as funds in a current or savings account. This is different from a fixed-term public deposit, and the two should not be confused.

Some NBFCs may be authorised to accept public deposits, while others are not. RBI’s FAQ specifically advises checking that an NBFC is registered and separately authorised to accept deposits. Therefore, “RBI-regulated NBFC” does not mean “deposit-taking NBFC.” If a company solicits a deposit, verify both its current NBFC registration and its permission to accept that type of deposit.

What an NBFC deposit does not mean

  • It is not a demand-deposit bank account.
  • It is not automatically covered by DICGC insurance.
  • It is not guaranteed by RBI. RBI regulation and supervision do not promise that the company will repay every depositor.

RBI’s detailed depositor guidance in the 2017 FAQ contains older, time-sensitive conditions such as rates, ratings and tenures. Do not treat those historical details as current terms. Check the latest RBI directions and the company’s current offer document before committing money.

Are NBFC deposits insured?

No. RBI’s FAQ states that the DICGC deposit-insurance facility available to bank depositors does not cover deposits with NBFCs. That is a material difference for anyone comparing a bank fixed deposit with an NBFC public deposit.

Insurance status is separate from the company’s credit quality. An NBFC can be registered and supervised and still face liquidity, credit, market or operational risks. Registration is evidence of regulatory status; it is not a repayment guarantee. Evaluate the issuer, the legal form of the product, maturity, withdrawal rules, security (if any), and the disclosures supplied to you.

What RBI registration tells you—and what it does not

Section 45-IA of the RBI Act is the key registration reference for NBFC business. RBI’s April 1, 2025 master circular says NBFCs, including housing finance companies, must be registered under the applicable provisions. Registration means the entity has entered the relevant regulatory framework; it does not turn the company into a bank.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Registration does tell you

  • The company has a regulatory status that can be checked against RBI’s records.
  • The company is subject to the rules applicable to its category, including prudential and conduct requirements that may change over time.
  • You can compare the entity named in the registration with the legal entity named in your loan, investment or service agreement.

Registration does not tell you

  • That the company can accept demand deposits.
  • That it can issue cheques or operate as a payment-system participant.
  • That a deposit is insured or repayment is guaranteed.
  • That every product marketed by an affiliated app, broker or agent is itself an RBI-regulated NBFC product.

How to verify an NBFC before using it

  1. Identify the legal entity. Copy the exact company name and, where shown, its registered office and corporate identification details from the agreement or official disclosure. A brand name or app name may not be the regulated entity.
  2. Check RBI’s current NBFC records. Search the RBI website for the company’s current registration status and category. Do not rely only on an old certificate, a social-media post or an agent’s claim.
  3. Check the product permission. If the offer involves a deposit, confirm that the entity is specifically authorised to accept public deposits. Registration alone is not enough.
  4. Read the money-flow terms. Confirm who receives your money, where repayments go, whether an intermediary is involved, the interest or fee schedule, penalties, maturity and withdrawal conditions.
  5. Check the protection statement. Look for a clear explanation of whether DICGC insurance applies. For an NBFC deposit, it does not.
  6. Match every document. The lender, deposit taker, payment recipient and grievance-contact details should match the legal entity named in the agreement. Escalate discrepancies before paying.
  7. Use current information. RBI categories, permissions and directions can change. Recheck status immediately before opening an account, investing or signing a long-term loan.

How the difference affects borrowers

For a borrower, an NBFC may be a legitimate source of personal, vehicle, housing, business or microfinance credit. The practical question is not simply “bank or NBFC?” Compare the actual offer.

Compare the total cost

  • Annual interest rate and whether it is fixed, floating or linked to a benchmark.
  • Processing, documentation, insurance, valuation, foreclosure and late-payment charges.
  • The repayment schedule, number of instalments and total amount payable.
  • Rules for prepayment, restructuring and missed payments.

Check who is actually lending

A digital marketplace or loan app may connect you to a regulated lender without being the lender itself. The sanction letter and loan agreement should identify the legal lending entity, its grievance channel and the applicable terms. Do not assume that a familiar interface has the same permissions as a bank.

Understand collection and data practices

Read the consent, communications and data-use clauses before accepting a loan. Keep copies of the sanction letter, agreement, repayment schedule and payment receipts. If an agent asks you to pay into a personal account or refuses to identify the regulated lender, stop and verify through the company’s official channels and RBI information.

How the difference affects savers and investors

If you are considering an NBFC public deposit, start with eligibility and protection rather than the advertised rate. Confirm that the company is authorised to accept deposits, that the legal entity matches RBI’s records, and that you understand the maturity and withdrawal rules. The absence of DICGC insurance means you bear a different risk from a covered bank depositor.

Do not describe an NBFC deposit as “RBI-backed.” RBI supervision does not guarantee repayment, and a higher advertised return can reflect higher issuer or liquidity risk. Use the latest disclosures and avoid relying on the dated rates, ratings or tenure examples in the 2017 FAQ.

Common misconceptions

“Every finance company is an NBFC.”

False. The company must fall within the applicable definition and principal-business requirements, and exemptions may apply. Verify the entity’s RBI status.

“An NBFC is just a smaller bank.”

False. NBFCs can lend and perform other regulated financial activities, but they do not have the same demand-deposit, cheque and payment-system permissions as banks.

“RBI registration guarantees my money.”

False. Registration is regulatory authorisation, not an assurance of repayment. NBFC deposits are not covered by DICGC insurance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“If an NBFC cannot take demand deposits, it cannot take any deposits.”

Too broad. Some NBFCs may be authorised to accept public deposits, while others may not. Check the specific permission and current terms.

“All NBFCs follow the same rules.”

False. Investment and credit companies, microfinance institutions, P2P platforms, account aggregators and housing finance companies operate under different category-specific frameworks.

Which is better: a bank or an NBFC?

There is no universal winner. For a borrowing decision, compare the lender’s total cost, repayment flexibility, service quality, complaint process and suitability for your circumstances. For a deposit decision, first establish whether the product is a bank deposit covered by the applicable DICGC scheme or an NBFC deposit without that insurance, then assess the issuer and terms.

The sound comparison is between a specific product and a specific, currently authorised institution—not between two labels. Confirm the NBFC’s category, permissions and legal entity before relying on any promise about access to credit, returns or protection.
