An internet video portal is an online destination that organizes access to video content, often bringing together videos from multiple programs. It may host videos itself or help viewers find videos hosted elsewhere. The key idea is the shared place for discovering and watching video—not a particular technology or a single required feature.
What makes a site an internet video portal?
A video portal gathers video content in one place so viewers can browse, search for, select, and watch items. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) describes a video portal as pulling together video from many programs in one location. That is a useful description, not a universal technical standard.

Portals can differ in how they deliver the content. Some host video directly; others act as aggregators, organizing links or search results that send viewers to a broadcaster or another video host. Hosting and aggregation are alternative ways to provide access, not requirements that every portal must meet.

The distinction is mainly what the page or service is organized around. A video portal collects video across multiple programs. A program portal focuses on one particular program and may combine its video with related non-video information, such as other material about that program. A broadcaster can use both: a program page for one show and a broader portal that collects videos from many shows.

What features might a video portal have?
Search, browsing, and sharing can help viewers find and pass along videos. The CRTC’s 2008 report discusses sites with search and sharing features, but those functions are not a checklist that defines every portal. The term describes the role of the destination—organizing access to video—rather than a fixed set of interface features.
- Browsing or categorization: organizes videos into collections or topics.
- Search: helps viewers locate a video within the portal or across sources.
- Sharing: lets viewers pass video links or content to others.
- Hosting or aggregation: determines whether videos are stored by the portal or found on other services.
A 2006 announcement about FreeTVonline.com illustrates the aggregation model: it described categorized streaming content and search results drawn from several hosting websites. That is a historical example, not evidence that the service still operates or a measure of today’s video portals.

Is “internet video portal” a formal technical term?
It is best understood descriptively. The sources cited here do not establish one universal legal or technical definition. A W3C Web and TV Interest Group task-force draft lists an “online video portal” as an example of a video distributor, but the draft says it has no official standing and does not represent standards-body consensus. In practice, the term points to an online place that brings video together for discovery and viewing.
