A camera saved photos to the card as usual; after setup, the card could send them over Wi-Fi to a computer or another configured destination. Eye-Fi’s wireless services and product support ended in 2016, so an old card should be treated as a legacy device, not a dependable current transfer solution.
What an Eye-Fi card did
An Eye-Fi card combined two jobs: storing image files like a conventional SD card and using a wireless radio to transfer those files. The camera still recorded each photo onto the card. The card, rather than the camera’s own wireless feature, handled the wireless connection.

The practical appeal was convenience: photographers could send images without repeatedly removing the card and connecting it to a computer. Sony’s guide describes the configured workflow as automatic transfer over wireless LAN to a computer or other destination: Sony Help Guide: Transferring image data using the Eye-Fi card.

- Configure the card. Set up its wireless access point or transfer destination and direction. The exact setup depended on the card and camera arrangement.
- Insert it in a compatible camera. The camera records photographs to the Eye-Fi card as it would to an SD card.
- Trigger or allow transfer. Depending on the camera, a new shot could start communication, pending images could begin uploading when the camera was switched on, or the user might need to select Eye-Fi communication in playback mode.
- Keep the camera available and the wireless link usable. The card sends images to the configured destination over the wireless network. The camera’s activity and signal conditions can affect whether transfer proceeds.
Camera behavior was not identical across models. Casio documents different transfer triggers and notes that transfer may pause during activities such as movie recording or writing data: Casio Support: Eye-Fi FAQ. Sony advises moving closer to the access point when reception is insufficient and warns that other communication devices can interrupt the wireless LAN connection.

Why transfers could pause or fail
- Weak signal or interference: A poor connection to the access point can prevent or interrupt uploads. Nikon’s D3500 manual likewise states that upload will not occur when signal strength is insufficient.
- Camera activity: Depending on the camera, recording video, writing other data, or being in the wrong mode could delay or prevent transfer.
- Camera-specific controls: A camera may offer an Eye-Fi upload setting, but that does not mean it supports every Eye-Fi function. Check the manual for the exact camera and card combination.
- Setup and destination: The card needed configured wireless and transfer settings; inserting an unprepared card alone did not establish where images should go.
Nikon’s D3500 manual documents its Eye-Fi upload controls and limitations: Nikon D3500 Online Manual: Eye-Fi Upload. It also warns that a card may emit wireless signals even when upload is disabled. Do not assume a camera’s off setting makes the card radio-silent; follow the camera manual and applicable local wireless-device rules.

Eye-Fi announced on June 30, 2016 that it would stop supporting several products, including SanDisk Eye-Fi SD cards. SanDisk says services relied on by wireless functionality were shut down on September 16, 2016, and advised customers to stop using wireless functionality by that date. This establishes that support ended and service-dependent wireless functions are no longer a reliable option. It does not establish that every local transfer mode on every individual card became impossible. Residual behavior depends on the model, its setup, and the camera; it has not been verified for a particular card here. Do not buy or rely on a secondhand Eye-Fi card on the assumption that its wireless transfer will work today.
If your goal is to retrieve photos already stored on an old card, a conventional SD card reader may be a practical wired option. Match the reader to the card format and your computer’s ports; it is not a wireless replacement.
