An earnings call is a company’s discussion of its financial results for a reporting period. Management explains what happened during the period, describes its outlook and answers questions, usually from analysts. To follow one, use the issuer’s official Investor Relations or Investors website, open its quarterly earnings or events page and select the webcast. The same page may also provide the earnings release, presentation, financial schedules, regulatory filing, transcript or replay.
What is an earnings call?
An earnings call is a scheduled presentation and question-and-answer session about a company’s recently reported results. It normally follows publication of an earnings release and other financial materials. Company executives give prepared remarks about the period, then respond to questions from analysts or other participants.

The call adds spoken context to documents that otherwise present mostly tables and written explanations. Management may discuss the factors behind a result, changes in business conditions, priorities for the next period and longer-term plans. The discussion is still management’s account of the business; it is not a replacement for financial statements or regulatory filings.
The usual sequence
- The company publishes an earnings release for a quarter, half-year or full year.
- It posts a webcast time and access instructions on its Investor Relations site.
- Executives deliver prepared comments about historical performance and the outlook.
- Participants ask questions, producing additional discussion about results, plans and risks.
- The issuer may later post a replay, transcript or related documents.
“Quarter” refers to the company’s fiscal calendar, which may not match January–March, April–June, July–September and October–December. Always verify the fiscal period and event date shown on the issuer’s page.

What an earnings call can add
A petition hosted by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission argued that calls can contain detail about business plans, competition, customers and longer-term strategy that is not fully captured in filings. Those are the petitioners’ arguments in a rulemaking request, not findings adopted by the SEC. Treat any extra context as information to assess against the company’s reported numbers and filings.
Why listen when the results are already published?
The release tells you what the company reported. The call can help explain why a result changed and how management interprets the next period. Listening also lets you hear the questions that professional analysts choose to ask and the specificity of the answers.
Use the call as one input in a document set rather than as a standalone verdict. A company’s outlook is a forecast, not a guarantee, and confident language does not change the underlying reported figures.

Not every issuer provides every item, and the material can differ from one quarter to the next. The company’s event page is the place to confirm what exists for the period you need.

How can I listen to an earnings call?
Follow this issuer-first process. It avoids outdated event listings and unofficial copies that may omit the latest documents.
- Find the official Investor Relations site. Search for the company name plus “investor relations” or “investors.” Open a result hosted by the issuer, not a similarly named commentary page.
- Open the earnings or events section. Look for labels such as “Quarterly Earnings,” “Financial Results,” “Events” or “Reports and Presentations.”
- Select the correct fiscal period. Confirm the quarter or year and the scheduled date. A company can publish several events close together, and its fiscal quarter may not follow the calendar.
- Choose the webcast. At the scheduled time, open the live audio or video link shown on that event page. Follow any registration or browser instructions displayed there.
- Download the supporting documents. Open the release and presentation first, then keep the relevant filing, schedules and any reconciliation nearby.
- If the event has ended, look for a replay or transcript. These are usually listed beside the original webcast when the issuer makes them available.
Use the event page’s own date and period labels rather than assuming a search result is current. An archived page can remain visible after a newer quarter has been posted.
How should investors prepare before the webcast?
Read the release and presentation first
Start with the issuer’s written materials. Mark the reported result, the company’s explanation for major changes and each statement about the outlook. Slides can condense a complex period into a few charts, while the release usually contains the formal headline figures and written commentary.

Keep the financial schedules and the relevant regulatory filing open while you listen. If the company presents an adjusted or non-GAAP measure, find the accompanying reconciliation and note what is excluded. This prevents a polished presentation from substituting for the detailed disclosure.

Prepare questions to test the explanation
Write down points that need clarification: an unexpected change in performance, a difference between the release and the presentation, or an outlook statement that depends on conditions not yet visible in the historical figures. The goal is not to predict the next share-price move; it is to understand what management is claiming and what evidence supports it.
Separate history from forecasts
Label notes as either reported results or forward-looking statements. Historical figures describe the period that ended. Guidance and other outlook comments describe what management expects. Record the assumptions and time frame attached to a forecast, and do not treat it as a promise.
What happens during the live call?
Most calls have two parts: prepared remarks and questions. During the first part, executives usually walk through the results and selected operating developments. The question period can reveal which issues matter most to analysts and whether management gives a precise answer, a range or a general response.
Take time-stamped notes if the webcast player displays a clock, and save the documents you used. Write down the exact period under discussion so that comments from one quarter do not get mixed with a later update.

Listen for the boundary between what has already happened and what management expects to happen. Words describing plans, targets or anticipated conditions are forward-looking. Compare them with the risks and assumptions in the filing instead of treating an optimistic tone as proof.

Often, but not always. Issuers may publish a webcast replay, audio file, video, transcript or a combination. Availability, retention period and the level of detail vary by company and by event. If no replay or transcript appears, the issuer may not have preserved it publicly.
For example, the AT&T 2026 quarterly earnings page groups webcasts with releases, financial and operational schedules, non-GAAP reconciliations, slide presentations, trends, quarterly filings and transcripts for listed periods. Its contents differ by quarter, so inspect the specific period rather than assuming every quarter has the same package.

Where can I get an earnings-call transcript?
Check the company’s event or quarterly-results page first. An official transcript is tied to the issuer’s date and fiscal period and can be read alongside the release and filing. Some companies publish transcripts for selected quarters only, and older files may eventually disappear.
A third-party transcript service can be useful when an official transcript is unavailable, but verify the quarter, publication date and wording against the webcast or issuer documents. No single format is universally available, and current comparative pricing for transcript services is not established here. Do not assume a transcript is complete merely because it appears in a search result.

How should I evaluate what management says?
Compare commentary with reported results
When management attributes a change to a particular factor, check whether the release, schedules or filing provide supporting detail. A broad explanation may be directionally useful without proving causation. Keep the company’s own figures visible while reviewing the call.
Check consistency across materials
Compare the presentation, release and filing for differences in definitions, periods or adjusted measures. If a number appears only in a slide or spoken answer, note that it may not have the same disclosure status as a figure in the filing.
Record unanswered questions
Questions that receive a vague or partial response are information too. Write down what remains unknown and look for clarification in a later filing or call rather than filling the gap with speculation.
Keep the SEC petition in context
The SEC-hosted petition at sec.gov/file/4-742 argues that earnings calls can expand public information about plans and strategy and raises concerns about uneven access to historical transcripts. It is a petitioners’ submission, not an SEC conclusion or a guarantee that every call contains undisclosed material information.

- Read the earnings release and presentation before the webcast.
- Keep financial schedules, reconciliations and the regulatory filing available for cross-checking.
- Attend the live webcast, or select the replay or transcript after the event.
- Separate reported results from forward-looking statements in your notes.
- Compare management’s explanations and answers with the written disclosures.
- Record the source, quarter and date for any replay or transcript you intend to revisit.
