An Apple M chip is a system on a chip (SoC) designed by Apple for Macs and other Apple devices. It brings major computing functions—including CPU and graphics resources, memory systems, and specialized engines—together in an integrated design. The exact capabilities vary by generation and model.
What does “M chip” mean?
“M chip” is the family name for Apple’s M-series SoCs, not a single specification shared by every device. Apple introduced M1 for Mac in 2020. Subsequent generations and variants have different component configurations and capabilities.

A system on a chip combines functions that might otherwise be handled by multiple chips. In its M1 announcement, Apple described bringing CPU, I/O, security, and other technologies together in a Mac SoC. Integrating components is an architectural choice; it does not guarantee that every task will be faster.

CPU and graphics resources
The CPU handles general-purpose processing, while the GPU handles graphics and other workloads suited to parallel processing. Their core configurations vary by chip. Apple’s announcements describe generation-specific configurations, so the M-series name alone does not tell you how many cores a particular chip has.

Unified memory
Apple describes unified memory as a shared pool that SoC components can access. This can reduce the need to copy data between separate memory pools. It is still a finite resource: shared memory does not mean unlimited memory or storage.
When comparing devices for large projects, check both the memory capacity and bandwidth listed for the specific model. Also consider the needs of the apps you use; the shared-memory design does not by itself establish how well every workload will perform.

Specialized engines and graphics features
Depending on the generation and variant, an M chip may include specialized processing or media capabilities. Check the exact chip and device specifications for features required by your apps, including media-engine support and graphics capabilities. How have Apple M chips changed?
Apple’s announcements trace the family from M1 in November 2020 to M2 in June 2022; M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max in October 2023; M4 in May 2024; M5 in October 2025; and M5 Pro and M5 Max in March 2026. As of October 7, 2026, M5 is the latest M-series generation identified in those official announcements, with M5 Pro and M5 Max variants also announced.

The suffixes matter. Pro and Max variants are not just different names for the same fixed design: configurations and capabilities differ. Apple’s M5 Pro and M5 Max announcement describes a Fusion Architecture connecting two dies into one SoC, while Apple’s M1 announcement describes its integrated SoC design. The family therefore should not be treated as if every chip has identical internal construction.
Apple’s launch announcements also report generation-specific transistor counts: 20 billion for M2 (2022), 25 billion for M3 (2023), and 28 billion for M4 (2024). These are Apple-reported specifications for those chips, not independent measurements or a direct guide to performance.

Which devices use Apple M chips?
The family is used in Macs and other Apple devices. In its October 2025 announcement, Apple named the 14-inch MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and Apple Vision Pro as devices using M5. In March 2026, Apple announced M5 Pro and M5 Max for MacBook Pro. Device availability and configurations can vary by market and over time, so check Apple’s current listing for the exact model you are considering.

- Choose the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen.
- Select About This Mac.
- Read the entry labeled Chip to see the Apple silicon chip name.
On an Intel-based Mac, the About This Mac window shows Processor instead. This check identifies the installed chip directly; a Mac’s model year alone may not.

What should you compare between M-series Macs?
The generation number or suffix is a useful starting point, not a complete verdict. Compare the specific device configurations against your workload:
- CPU and GPU configuration: Match the processing and graphics resources to the apps and tasks you use.
- Unified memory capacity and bandwidth: Consider these for large projects and applications that handle substantial data.
- Media and graphics support: Confirm the specific engines and graphics features your software requires.
- The rest of the device: Form factor, ports, and supported software can matter as much as the chip for a particular use.
Apple’s performance comparisons are vendor claims tied to the conditions and comparison systems stated in each announcement. They should not be read as independent tests or as a universal ranking across every M-series device and workload.
