What Is an Anti-Submarine Warfare Ship, and What Equipment Does It Carry?

An anti-submarine warfare (ASW) ship is a surface warship designed to find, identify, track and attack submarines. It is not defined by one piece of equipment. Effective ASW links underwater sensors, acoustic analysis, command-and-control, fire control, communications and weapons, often with a helicopter that searches beyond the ship’s immediate area. The exact fit varies by ship and class: a sonar, helicopter, torpedo launcher or rocket system described for one vessel must not be treated as universal.

How an ASW ship turns an underwater contact into an engagement

Submarines are difficult targets because most of the information available to a surface ship is acoustic. An ASW crew therefore works through a chain rather than relying on a single sensor:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Detect: sonar or another acoustic receiver notices energy that could be a submarine.
  2. Classify: operators and software examine the signal to distinguish a submarine from shipping, marine life, seabed effects or other noise.
  3. Track: repeated observations are combined into a contact track, with the system estimating movement and uncertainty.
  4. Decide and coordinate: the combat-management and command systems help the crew choose a search pattern, assign the helicopter or other sensors and prepare a weapon solution.
  5. Engage and reassess: a ship-launched or air-delivered weapon may be used where authorized, while sensors continue checking the contact and the result.

The U.S. Navy describes its AN/SQQ-89(V) system as integrating undersea-warfare combat management, fire control, command and control, active and passive detection, acoustic processing and helicopter sensor information. That illustrates why “the ship has sonar” is an incomplete description of ASW capability.

Sonar and acoustic sensors

Hull-mounted sonar

A hull-mounted sonar is installed in the ship and can transmit an active acoustic pulse, listen for echoes, or operate in a passive listening mode. The U.S. Navy’s AN/SQQ-89(V) description identifies the hull-mounted AN/SQS-53C sonar as one element of the system. A hull installation gives the ship a continuously available sensor, but its performance depends on water conditions, ship noise, traffic and how the signal is processed. The cited official material does not establish a universal detection range.

Towed arrays

A towed array is streamed behind the ship to place hydrophones away from the vessel’s own machinery noise. Arrays can listen passively and, in some designs, support low-frequency active transmissions. The Royal Navy says the City-class Type 26 uses a towed sonar array for active and passive detection and torpedo warning on its official class page. The HMS Glasgow page describes a low-frequency active and passive towed array used to detect, classify and track submarines before they detect the ship.

Acoustic-intercept receivers

Not every acoustic system is trying to send a pulse. The AN/SQQ-89(V) description also includes wideband, omni-directional acoustic-intercept receivers. These receivers are intended to pick up and process sound arriving from other sources, giving operators another way to build a contact picture while limiting the need for the ship to transmit.

Multi-function and offboard acoustic inputs

The same U.S. Navy description lists a Multi-Function Towed Array and integration with the LAMPS helicopter system for sonobuoy signal processing. Sonobuoys are expendable sensors deployed from an aircraft; their signals can add observations at locations separated from the ship. The important capability is the processing and networking that bring those remote observations into the ship’s tactical picture, not merely the presence of a buoy.

Acoustic processing and combat management

Raw sonar returns are not automatically a submarine track. Operators must account for reverberation, ocean conditions, bottom effects, biologics, shipping and changes in the target’s aspect. Acoustic-processing software helps extract useful features and present them to trained operators, while combat-management software combines those results with navigation, identification, tactical data and information from other platforms.

According to the U.S. Navy’s AN/SQQ-89(V) fact file, the integrated system supports undersea-warfare combat management, fire control, command and control, onboard training and helicopter sensor integration. In practical terms, those functions allow a crew to move from “something was heard” to a managed search, a maintained track and a coordinated engagement. They also explain why two ships with broadly similar sonar labels can have different operational effectiveness: the interfaces, data fusion, communications and doctrine matter.

Helicopters and other offboard sensors

Why an embarked helicopter changes the search problem

A helicopter can move rapidly away from the ship, investigate a contact from another bearing and deploy sensors without moving the surface combatant into the same area. It can also return to the ship to refuel and rearm, allowing the crew to alternate aircraft and ship sensors during a prolonged search. This creates a wider, distributed search pattern rather than a single sensor location.

Aircraft examples in official descriptions

The Royal Navy says a City-class ship such as HMS Glasgow can embark either a Merlin or Wildcat helicopter. Its ship page states that these aircraft can carry torpedoes and depth charges to attack submarines at longer ranges. The statement describes the aircraft and ship combination; it does not mean that every ASW ship embarks both types, or that every helicopter has the same stores.

A separate U.S. Navy account of USS Shiloh describes the cruiser operating with MH-60R Seahawk helicopters. That account was published on May 1, 2015, so it is a dated, ship-specific example rather than proof of the vessel’s current configuration or a standard fit for all cruisers.

Helicopter data on the ship

Aircraft sensors are most useful when the ship can receive, process and act on their data. AN/SQQ-89(V)’s documented integration with the LAMPS helicopter system for sonobuoy signal processing is an example of this connection. A comparison that lists only the helicopter model misses the data links, consoles, communications and procedures that make the aircraft part of the ASW system.

Weapons and defensive functions

Ship-launched torpedoes

Some ASW ships carry torpedo tubes that can fire lightweight anti-submarine torpedoes. In the 2015 USS Shiloh account, the U.S. Navy lists six over-the-side torpedo tubes. That number belongs to the configuration described in that release and should not be generalized to other ships or to Shiloh today without a newer source.

Rocket-launched torpedoes

The same Shiloh account says the ship could launch anti-submarine rocket (ASROC) torpedoes from its vertical launch system. A rocket-assisted weapon can deliver a torpedo to a designated area more quickly than a ship traveling there, but the presence of ASROC is a ship-specific feature. Many vessels with vertical launch cells are not thereby confirmed to carry ASROC.

Air-delivered stores

The Royal Navy’s HMS Glasgow description identifies torpedoes and depth charges carried by its Merlin or Wildcat helicopters. These are examples of air-delivered submarine weapons, not a universal list for every embarked aircraft. The aircraft may also carry sensors and sonobuoys, so its contribution can include both finding and attacking a submarine.

Torpedo warning

ASW equipment also supports the ship’s survival. The Royal Navy identifies torpedo warning as a function of the Type 26 towed-array system. This shows that an acoustic suite can provide warning of an incoming threat as well as search for an enemy submarine.

What equipment categories should you compare?

When comparing two real ships, use the same categories and identify the class, vessel and date behind each claim.

Category Questions to ask Evidence and limits
Hull sonar Is there a hull-mounted active/passive sonar, and which model is named? AN/SQS-53C is identified within AN/SQQ-89(V); no universal range is stated.
Towed or variable-depth sensing Does the ship stream a towed array, and does it support active, passive or both modes? Type 26 is described with active/passive towed sensing; the exact fit varies by class.
Acoustic interception Can the ship receive wideband or directional acoustic signals from outside sources? AN/SQQ-89(V) includes wideband omni-directional acoustic-intercept receivers.
Processing and combat management How are sonar, helicopter data, fire control and command functions integrated? AN/SQQ-89(V) is documented as an integrated undersea-warfare combat system.
Aviation Can the ship embark a helicopter, and which aircraft and sensors or weapons are documented? HMS Glasgow is described with Merlin or Wildcat options; Shiloh’s 2015 account mentions MH-60R operations.
Engagement systems Are torpedo tubes, ASROC or air-delivered weapons specifically identified? Shiloh’s release lists six torpedo tubes and ASROC; Glasgow’s page lists helicopter torpedoes and depth charges.
Warning and protection Does the acoustic suite provide torpedo warning or other defensive functions? Type 26’s towed array is explicitly described as supporting torpedo warning.
Current status Is the information current class data or an older ship-specific release? Use publication dates: the Shiloh example is dated May 1, 2015.

HMS Glasgow A low-frequency active/passive towed array; ability to embark Merlin or Wildcat helicopters; aircraft can carry torpedoes and depth charges. Ship-page example of a Type 26 configuration and aviation role.
USS Shiloh The U.S. Navy’s May 1, 2015 account lists six over-the-side torpedo tubes, ASROC torpedoes from the vertical launch system and MH-60R Seahawk operations. Dated, ship-specific evidence; do not present it as a current universal fit.
AN/SQQ-89(V) combat system Hull-mounted AN/SQS-53C sonar, wideband acoustic-intercept receivers, a Multi-Function Towed Array, active/passive detection, combat management, fire control and helicopter/sonobuoy integration. A system description, not a claim that every ship carrying it has every other item listed in a different source.

A practical ASW mission sequence

  1. Prepare the sensor picture: the ship configures hull sonar, towed arrays and acoustic receivers for the local conditions and mission.
  2. Search in multiple modes: active transmissions can produce echoes, while passive arrays and intercept receivers listen without transmitting.
  3. Deploy the aircraft: if available, an embarked helicopter moves to a separate search area and can work with sonobuoys or its own sensors.
  4. Fuse observations: acoustic processors and the combat-management system compare contacts from the ship, aircraft and other inputs.
  5. Classify and maintain the track: the crew checks whether successive detections are consistent with a submarine and updates the track as conditions change.
  6. Select an engagement method: depending on the ship’s documented fit, this may involve a torpedo tube, ASROC or an aircraft carrying a torpedo or depth charge.
  7. Continue warning and reassessment: the same acoustic network can support torpedo warning and help determine whether the contact or threat has changed.

What the published specifications do not establish

The official descriptions cited here do not provide a comparable detection range, probability of classification, fleet-wide total, cost or performance ranking. Ocean acoustics vary with temperature, salinity, depth, seabed shape, weather, shipping and the target’s behavior, so a single range number would not describe every encounter anyway. Treat claims about a particular ship’s current sensors or weapons as time- and configuration-dependent unless a current official source confirms them.

There is also no universal “ASW ship equipment list.” Some vessels emphasize a quiet hull and long towed array; others rely heavily on aviation, distributed sensors or a particular combat system. A reliable comparison names the vessel or class, identifies each sensor and weapon category, and records the date and source for every claim.

Bottom line for identifying an ASW ship

Look for an integrated chain: underwater sensing, acoustic processing, a combat-management and fire-control system, a way to coordinate aircraft or offboard sensors, and weapons appropriate to the ship’s mission. Hull sonar and towed arrays are common categories in the official examples, but neither is guaranteed on every vessel. Helicopters, torpedo tubes, ASROC and depth charges are likewise configuration choices. The defining capability is the coordinated process of detecting, classifying, tracking and engaging submarines—not any single launcher or sonar model.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between active and passive sonar on an ASW ship?

Active sonar transmits sound and analyzes echoes, while passive sonar and acoustic-intercept receivers listen for sound made or reflected by other sources. The cited AN/SQQ-89(V) and Type 26 descriptions include both modes.

Does every anti-submarine ship carry a helicopter?

No. Helicopter operations are ship- and class-dependent. The Royal Navy specifically says HMS Glasgow can embark a Merlin or Wildcat, while the U.S. Navy’s 2015 USS Shiloh account describes MH-60R operations; those examples do not establish a universal requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are torpedo tubes and ASROC standard on all ASW ships?

No. The U.S. Navy listed six over-the-side torpedo tubes and ASROC capability for USS Shiloh in a May 1, 2015 release. Those are documented features of that example, not a standard fit for every ASW vessel.

Why can’t a ship’s sonar range be used as a simple measure of ASW quality?

The official pages cited here do not publish comparable detection ranges, and underwater acoustics change with environmental conditions, interference and target behavior. Sensor integration, processing, aircraft support and crew procedures also affect the usable track.
