What Is an AI-Powered Cyberattack, and How Does It Work?

An AI-powered cyberattack is a cyberattack in which a criminal uses artificial intelligence to help with one or more tasks—such as researching a target, writing a convincing message, creating fake audio or video, analyzing stolen data, or assisting malware-related work. AI may make attacks faster or more tailored, but the label does not mean an AI system independently plans and completes an entire intrusion.

What “AI-powered cyberattack” means

The term is a descriptive umbrella rather than a single formal category. It covers ordinary cybercrime in which AI contributes somewhere in the attack chain. The human operator may still choose the target, approve the content, operate criminal accounts, move money, or control the compromised system.

The FBI’s December 3, 2024 advisory says criminals use generative-AI text for social engineering, spear phishing and financial-fraud schemes, including romance and investment scams. The same advisory discusses fraudulent identity documents and manipulated media as potential tools for impersonation and fraud. In practice, “AI-powered” usually describes assistance, not full autonomy.

AI can also be used by defenders. The National Credit Union Administration’s June 2024 cybersecurity report describes financial organizations using AI for defensive security work as well as warning about offensive uses. That dual-use quality matters: the technology itself is not the attack; the criminal objective and the way the technology is applied are.

How an AI-assisted attack can unfold

The following sequence combines methods described by U.S., Singaporean and UK government sources. It is an explanatory model, not a claim that every incident follows every step.

  1. Gather target context. A criminal collects public information about a person or organization, such as job title, reporting lines, projects, suppliers, travel, language and communication habits. AI can summarize large amounts of material, identify relationships and suggest details that make a later message sound plausible.
  2. Choose the pressure point. The operator selects an objective—credential theft, payment fraud, malware delivery or additional intelligence gathering—and decides which trusted identity would be most persuasive. A supposed manager, customer, bank employee, government official or family member may be used.
  3. Generate or alter the content. A language model can draft a polished email, chat message or phone script. Generative tools can also produce or modify images, identity documents, audio and video. Singapore’s Cyber Security Agency (CSA) warns that deepfakes have been used in scams and phishing; the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) describes deepfake-enhanced social engineering that can trick staff into surrendering credentials, downloading malware or disclosing information.
  4. Deliver the request. The message arrives through email, messaging, a phone call, a video meeting or a combination of channels. It may ask the recipient to click a link, open an attachment, reveal a one-time code, change bank details, transfer money or keep the request confidential.
  5. Exploit the response. If the target clicks, signs in, pays or shares information, the criminal receives access or an immediate financial benefit. AI can help adapt follow-up messages, translate conversations or maintain a believable dialogue rather than stopping after one contact.
  6. Use access or data for the next objective. Government assessments describe AI-assisted analysis of data after an initial breach to support further targeting. Other assessments discuss potential assistance with malware and code. These are documented capabilities or risks, not proof that every criminal tool writes effective malware or operates without human control.

Where AI changes the attack

Delivery channel Typical criminal objective Possible AI contribution Useful verification opportunity
Email or workplace chat Credential theft, payment fraud or malware delivery Drafting a tailored message, matching an organization’s tone, translating text and generating follow-up replies Confirm the request through a known phone number, internal directory or a new message started by the supposed sender
Voice call Urgent payment, account takeover or disclosure of sensitive information Voice cloning, a prepared script and rapid responses to questions Hang up and call the person back using a trusted number; use a pre-agreed challenge or callback process
Video meeting or recorded video Executive impersonation, approval of a transfer or collection of credentials Synthetic or altered face and voice, plus generated conversation prompts Verify in a separate channel and require normal approval controls rather than relying on the video alone
Documents, profiles or identity media Fraudulent account creation, impersonation or social-engineering credibility Creating or altering identification documents, profile images and supporting material Check the issuing organization and independently validate identity details
Compromised systems and data Further intrusion, information gathering or targeted fraud Summarizing stolen data, finding high-value records and suggesting next targets; possible code or malware assistance Use endpoint, identity and network monitoring to investigate unusual access and data movement

The comparison is useful because AI’s role differs by stage. A polished email is not the same technical problem as a poisoned machine-learning model, even though both may be described as AI-related attacks.

Generative-AI social engineering versus attacks on AI systems

Most public examples discussed in connection with this title involve generative AI helping a person deceive another person. NIST’s January 2024 Adversarial Machine Learning: A Taxonomy and Terminology of Attacks and Mitigations uses a broader technical lens. It classifies attacks by method, lifecycle stage, attacker goals, capabilities and knowledge, and includes evasion, data poisoning and privacy breaches.

Generative-AI-assisted social engineering

The target is usually a person, account or business process. AI produces or improves content intended to persuade someone to act. The key defenses are identity verification, payment controls, phishing resistance, access management and staff awareness.

Adversarial machine learning

The target is an AI model or its surrounding data and pipeline. An attacker might manipulate training data, craft inputs that cause misclassification, extract sensitive information or exploit weaknesses in how a model is deployed. NIST’s taxonomy helps security teams describe these attacks consistently. It should not be treated as evidence that a deepfake email and data poisoning are the same kind of incident.

What makes AI-assisted deception convincing

  • Personalization at scale: A criminal can create different messages for many recipients while including role-specific details.
  • Fewer obvious language errors: Generated text can remove spelling and grammar mistakes that once made phishing easier to spot.
  • Multilingual reach: Translation and rewriting can support contact in the target’s preferred language.
  • Consistent impersonation: A generated script, cloned voice or synthetic video can reinforce a false identity across channels.
  • Fast iteration: If a target hesitates, the operator can ask an AI tool for a calmer explanation, a more urgent version or answers to likely objections.
  • Document support: Altered images, identity documents or profile material can make a fraudulent story appear corroborated.

These advantages are not guarantees. A recipient may still notice an unusual request, a mismatched domain, a strange payment destination or a failure to follow normal procedure. The FBI and DHS describe the techniques as tools criminals can use; neither source establishes that AI succeeds in every setting.

How to spot a possible AI-enabled scam

Do not rely on detecting a particular “AI look.” Generated content changes quickly, and genuine messages can contain mistakes. Focus on the requested action, the identity claim and whether the request fits an established process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Urgency plus secrecy: The sender demands immediate action and says not to tell colleagues, family or a supervisor.
  • Unexpected changes to payment details: A familiar supplier or executive suddenly provides a new bank account or asks for a gift-card, cryptocurrency or wire transfer.
  • Requests for authentication data: Someone asks for a password, one-time code, recovery phrase or remote-access approval.
  • Channel switching: An email pushes you to a personal messaging account, or a caller insists that you cannot use the normal callback route.
  • Visual or audio inconsistencies: CSA advises examining questionable media. Look for unnatural facial movement, inconsistent lighting, odd pauses, distorted hands or a voice that sounds subtly unlike the person you know. These clues are not conclusive by themselves.
  • Process mismatch: The request bypasses dual approval, a purchase order, a known support portal or another control that normally applies.

When the content could be synthetic, verify the underlying claim rather than arguing about whether the media is a deepfake. CSA recommends checking information through official sources.

What to do when a request may be fraudulent

  1. Pause the transaction. Do not click the link, open the attachment, disclose a code or send money while the identity is uncertain.
  2. Use a separate trusted channel. Call the person or organization using a number already stored in your records or printed on an official statement. Do not use the number, link or contact details supplied in the suspicious message.
  3. Apply normal approval rules. For business payments, require the ordinary second approver and independently confirm any change to banking details. For account recovery, use the provider’s official app or website.
  4. Preserve evidence. Keep the original email, headers where available, phone number, usernames, payment instructions, timestamps, recordings and screenshots. Avoid forwarding malicious attachments to colleagues.
  5. Contain possible compromise. If credentials were entered, change them from a clean device, revoke active sessions, enable multifactor authentication and notify the organization’s security team. If malware may have run, disconnect the affected device from the network and contact IT.
  6. Report promptly. In the United States, the FBI directs victims of internet-enabled fraud to report through the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). Also notify the bank, payment provider, employer or relevant platform immediately; rapid reporting can improve the chance of stopping a transfer.

How organizations can reduce the risk

Make high-impact requests independently verifiable

Require a second channel for payment changes, privileged-access approvals, payroll updates and urgent requests from executives. Establish a known callback number and a challenge phrase or comparable procedure for sensitive transactions. A realistic voice or video should not override a control that was designed to work without trusting the caller’s appearance.

Strengthen identity and access controls

Use phishing-resistant multifactor authentication where practical, apply least privilege, remove dormant accounts and monitor unusual sign-ins. Separate administrative accounts from everyday accounts so that a stolen password provides less reach.

Train for scenarios, not just spelling errors

Exercises should include polished multilingual messages, cloned voices, fake video meetings and requests that combine urgency with confidentiality. Teach staff how to pause and verify without making them responsible for proving whether media was generated by AI.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Monitor the whole attack chain

Collect identity, email, endpoint, cloud and network signals. Investigate unusual mailbox rules, impossible travel, mass downloads, new forwarding addresses, unexpected remote-access tools and data movement after a suspected login. AI-assisted analysis can support defenders, but it should operate within access controls, logging and human review.

Protect data that makes impersonation easier

Limit public exposure of organizational charts, direct phone numbers, travel schedules and internal project details. Restrict access to sensitive customer and employee data, and maintain tested backups. The less useful context an attacker can gather, the harder it is to make a request appear to come from an insider.

What is established—and what is not

Government advisories establish that criminals are using or are expected to use AI for persuasive text, impersonation, synthetic media, fraud, information analysis and potentially malware- or code-related work. They also establish that defenders are adopting AI. They do not provide one comparable worldwide prevalence figure for “AI-powered cyberattacks,” and they do not prove a universal increase in attack success whenever AI is involved.

Reported capabilities also vary by tool access, operator skill, target defenses and the quality of the underlying data. Some examples are demonstrated incidents; others are risk assessments about what could become easier. Treat claims about autonomous, end-to-end attacks cautiously unless a source describes the specific system, environment and observed behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical conclusion is narrower and more useful: AI can lower the effort required to create convincing content and analyze information, so controls based only on grammar, spelling or visual confidence are weaker than they were. Independent verification, strong identity controls and rapid incident response remain effective regardless of whether a human or a model produced the initial message.
