AmneziaVPN is a free, open-source VPN client that can connect to several protocols and configure a VPN server you control. In its self-hosted mode, the application does not provide the server itself. You supply a compatible Linux VPS or physical server, and AmneziaVPN logs in over SSH, installs Docker and Amnezia server containers, creates protocol credentials, and then routes your devices through that server.
That arrangement gives you control over the endpoint and the hosting region, but it is not automatic anonymity or a guaranteed way around censorship. Your provider, server address, network route, protocol, local ISP and maintenance decisions all affect whether the connection works and how much privacy it provides.

What AmneziaVPN actually is
AmneziaVPN combines two functions that are easy to confuse:
- Client software: the app used to create configurations, connect devices and select a VPN protocol.
- Server deployment tool: the self-hosted workflow that prepares a Linux server you own or lease.
The server is the machine through which your encrypted traffic exits. It may be a rented virtual private server (VPS), a server in a home or office, or another Linux system with a public address. AmneziaVPN is the control and connection software; it is not the hosted endpoint included with the download.

According to Amnezia’s technical explanation, the app uses the IP address, SSH username and password or private key you provide. It installs Docker, starts separate Amnezia containers for protocol connections, and generates keys and a root certificate. That is the publisher’s implementation description, not an independent security audit.
Self-hosting also does not mean that no company is involved. If you rent a VPS, the hosting company owns or operates the physical infrastructure and can observe relevant account, network and traffic metadata available to an infrastructure provider. A VPN can reduce exposure on an untrusted local network, but it does not make you anonymous, erase activity at the destination, or guarantee access to blocked services.

What you need before installing it
Compatibility should be checked before you rent or configure a server. Amnezia’s published requirements are specific rather than generic “Linux VPS” advice.

The minimum specification is generally intended for a few devices. Actual throughput depends on the host’s network allocation, distance and routing, encryption overhead, client connection and protocol. The documentation does not establish a universal speed result for self-hosted installations.
SSH privileges and credentials
A root login is typical, but a sudo-enabled account can work if it can run any sudo command without being prompted for a password. Treat those credentials as server-management credentials, not as an ordinary app password. Use a server and account you control, protect private keys, and remove or rotate access when an administrator no longer needs it. For additional devices, Amnezia’s FAQ recommends guest access rather than handing out full server-management access.

Checks to perform at the hosting site
- Confirm the image is one of the supported Ubuntu or Debian releases.
- Verify that the virtual machine uses KVM and exposes an amd64/x86-64 CPU.
- Confirm a public IPv4 address is assigned and that the provider permits VPN software.
- Check that SSH is enabled and note whether it uses a non-default port.
- Confirm the advertised CPU, RAM and SSD are dedicated or guaranteed enough for your expected users.
How the self-hosted setup works
The basic workflow is designed to avoid manual terminal commands. You still need a working server and powerful SSH access; the app automates the installation after you supply them.
- Install AmneziaVPN. Use the current build for your device from Amnezia’s official distribution channel.
- Choose “Self-hosted VPN.” This selects the server-deployment path rather than a preconfigured service.
- Enter the server details. Supply the public IPv4 address, SSH username, and either the SSH password or private key. If SSH listens on another port, enter that port as well.
- Choose automatic or manual installation. Automatic installation deploys AmneziaWG. Manual installation lets you select a supported protocol.
- Wait for the deployment. The app connects over SSH, installs Docker, starts the Amnezia containers and generates the protocol keys and certificate material.
- Import or share a connection configuration. Add the resulting profile to your own devices. Create separate user or guest configurations when you do not want to distribute administrative SSH credentials.
- Add protocols later if needed. The app can install additional supported protocols after the initial server setup, subject to the server’s resources and current documentation.
Keep a record of which device or person received each configuration. If a key is exposed, revoke or recreate that user rather than replacing every server credential unnecessarily.
Which protocols can you use?
Amnezia’s protocol guide lists AmneziaWG, XRay VLESS Reality, OpenVPN and WireGuard. They are not interchangeable profiles: each has different client support, settings and behavior under network filtering.

In heavily censored conditions, Amnezia’s FAQ points readers toward AmneziaWG or XRay, but neither is promised to work everywhere. Choose based on the network you must use, the clients you need to support and the settings you can operate—not on a claim that one protocol is universally fastest or safest.
AmneziaWG version changes and migration risk
The official migration guide describes a version-specific path from AmneziaWG 2.0 to 3.1. It specifies AmneziaVPN 5.0.2.1 or later, removal of the existing 2.0 protocol, and a fresh installation of 3.1.

Removal is destructive to that protocol’s access state: users created for it are removed, and their existing keys and configuration files stop working. Plan to recreate every affected user and redistribute new profiles. Do not start the migration during a trip or when you have no alternative access to the server. Version-sensitive instructions can change, so check the current migration documentation in the app’s release you are actually running before making changes.
Why a self-hosted VPN may still be unreachable
Self-hosting changes the endpoint; it does not control the path between your device and that endpoint. A provider may block VPN use, a region may filter an address range, or an ISP may restrict particular ports or UDP traffic. If a network allows only destinations on a whitelist, you may be unable to reach the VPN server or even establish SSH access to install it. Amnezia’s FAQ says there is currently no ready-made supported self-hosted route that guarantees a way around whitelist-only restrictions.
High-UDP-port troubleshooting
Some ISPs block UDP on commonly used high ports. The setup documentation suggests trying an unused port up to 9999 when that is the specific problem. This is a troubleshooting option, not a promise that filtering will be bypassed. Change the port consistently in the server configuration and client profile, and ensure the hosting provider’s firewall allows it.
Separate reachability from performance
A connection that establishes can still be slow or unstable. Relevant variables include server CPU and network allocation, host congestion, geographic distance, Internet routing, the client’s access network and protocol overhead. The official material reviewed for this topic does not publish a general self-hosted benchmark, so subscription-service speed figures should not be presented as measurements of your server.
Using AmneziaWG on an OpenWrt router
A router is an optional extension, not a requirement for self-hosting. Amnezia documents an OpenWrt workflow in which you install an AmneziaWG package on the router and load a configuration generated by AmneziaVPN. This can route a household or office network without installing a VPN client on every device.

Package availability depends on the exact OpenWrt release, router architecture, firmware build and hardware support. The documentation names releases for which AmneziaWG 3.1 packages were available at publication time, but it also instructs readers to check the current build list. Before buying an OpenWrt-compatible router, verify that the precise model and firmware have a currently supported AmneziaWG package; a generic OpenWrt label is not enough.

Self-hosting is a fit when you are comfortable administering Linux and need control over one endpoint. It is less suitable when you need a turnkey service, many geographic locations or someone else to absorb server maintenance.
Security and maintenance checklist
- Use SSH keys where practical, protect the private key and avoid sharing root credentials.
- Prefer a sudo account with passwordless sudo when root login is not required by your provider’s policy.
- Keep AmneziaVPN, the server operating system, Docker components and protocol packages updated.
- Track which users have each configuration and recreate only the affected profiles after a compromise.
- Back up necessary configuration information securely, but do not leave private keys in unencrypted cloud notes.
- Monitor disk, memory, CPU and network usage as you add devices.
- Confirm firewall rules and provider policies before opening a new port.
- Test from each important network—home, mobile and travel—before relying on the server.
- Remember that the VPS operator and destination services remain part of the trust model.
Common failure points and practical responses
The app cannot log in over SSH
Check the public IPv4 address, SSH port, username, private-key permissions and whether the account can run sudo without a password. A whitelist-only network may block SSH before AmneziaVPN can do anything.
Installation stops while preparing Docker
Verify the OS release, KVM virtualization, amd64 architecture, available SSD space and administrator privileges. Unsupported images or restricted package repositories can prevent the automated deployment.

The profile installs but will not connect
Check that the server is still running, the selected port is open, the profile matches the installed protocol version and the local network permits the required traffic. Try the documented alternate-port procedure only when UDP blocking is suspected.
Existing AmneziaWG keys fail after an upgrade
If you followed the 2.0-to-3.1 migration path, that is expected: removing the old protocol removes its users and invalidates their configurations. Recreate users and distribute new profiles.
Only some devices work
Compare client support and protocol settings, then issue a separate configuration for each device or guest. Do not assume a profile generated for one platform has identical behavior on another.
Is AmneziaVPN right for you?
Choose self-hosted AmneziaVPN when you can supply a compliant Linux server, protect administrator-level SSH access and perform ongoing updates. It offers control over the endpoint and protocol selection, but the trade-off is that you become responsible for availability, credentials, routing and recovery.
Choose a different approach when your network permits only whitelisted destinations, your provider blocks VPN traffic, you need guaranteed support across many regions, or you do not want to administer a server. In every case, treat protocol guidance as contextual: test from the networks that matter to you and keep a recovery path before changing a working deployment.
