AMD’s Versal AI Core XQRVC1902 is a radiation-tolerant adaptive system-on-chip (SoC) designed for demanding space applications. It combines programmable logic, AI and digital signal-processing resources, embedded processors, memory, and high-speed interfaces so spacecraft can process payload data onboard rather than send every raw bit to Earth first. AMD targets it at onboard processing, digital payloads, and remote sensing; the public sources cited here do not identify a spacecraft that has flown this exact device.
What the XQRVC1902 is
XQRVC1902 is the device designation for a member of AMD’s radiation-tolerant Versal AI Core XQR family. It is an adaptive SoC, not a standalone AI model or a complete spacecraft computer. Its resources bring several kinds of computing together on one chip: programmable logic for custom digital hardware, AI Engine tiles and DSP engines for parallel workloads, Arm application and real-time processor cores, memory, and fixed connectivity and system-management resources.

AMD’s Radiation Tolerant Versal AI Core Series Data Sheet, DS946, revision 1.2, was released on February 19, 2025. It covers device features, architecture, radiation parameters, packages, pinout, and ordering information.
How it can be used in a spacecraft
Consider a satellite instrument collecting imagery or radar data. The XQRVC1902 can be configured to handle incoming data, apply signal or image processing, and run inference or other compute-heavy workloads. Its embedded processors can manage software and control tasks, while the system passes selected results to other spacecraft systems or stores them for later transmission. This describes a plausible use of the documented architecture, not a confirmed pipeline on a named mission.

AMD identifies onboard processing, digital payloads, and remote sensing as target applications. Its product brief also lists machine learning, cloud and object detection, broadband internet, high-speed networks, hyperspectral imaging, synthetic aperture radar, GPS/GNSS, and instrumentation. These are vendor-stated application targets, not evidence that the XQRVC1902 has been deployed in each type of mission.
Why reconfiguration matters
Programmable logic can be configured for a mission’s processing needs, and AMD describes “unlimited on-orbit reconfiguration” for the XQR family. That can allow a spacecraft team to update processing assignments or algorithms after launch, subject to validation and the mission’s system design. It does not mean the device has an unlimited service life or that every change is safe without testing.

What radiation tolerant means—and does not mean
AMD describes the XQR devices as radiation tolerant and says it characterizes total ionizing dose and single-event effects. DS946 includes radiation parameter summaries and Weibull fits for tested components, including configuration RAM, block RAM, UltraRAM, the processor system, AI Engine, and XilSEM. It points readers to radiation reports on AMD’s Space Secure Site for test summaries.
Radiation tolerant is not the same as radiation proof, nor does the label establish suitability for every orbit, mission duration, or shielding plan. A mission team needs to assess its radiation environment and dose, single-event behavior, shielding, redundancy, operating configuration, and system-level fault handling. The public material cited here does not provide a radiation assessment for a particular mission.

- Opening cargo bay doors
AMD’s product brief says “No external scrubber required” and states that XilSEM meets LEO SEU mitigation requirements. Those are AMD’s product claims, not a universal recommendation for every orbit or mission profile.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPackages, temperature, and qualification status
DS946 describes ruggedized, lidless organic BGA packages VSRA2197 and VSYA2197 with stiffener rings. Both are listed as 45 × 45 mm with 0.92 mm pitch. The VSRA version includes land-side capacitors and has a different center arrangement from the VSYA version. AMD lists military temperature support from –55°C to +125°C and MIL-STD-883 group D qualification testing among the package features.

Keep that data-sheet information separate from AMD’s later enhanced-package announcement. On October 1, 2026, AMD said XQRVC1902 devices in an enhanced space-grade package were sampling with early-access customers and that testing to MIL-PRF-38535 Class Y was in progress. AMD described support for missions lasting up to 15 years as a design aim for that package; the announcement did not say Class Y testing was complete.
DS946 separately lists the XQRVC1902 as production-released and Vivado tools 2022.1 v2.08 as the minimum supported tool release. That device and software status does not establish that the separately announced enhanced package has completed qualification.
How to evaluate it for a mission
The right question is not simply how many compute resources the chip contains. A spacecraft design review should compare the device and its implementation against mission requirements, including:
Recommended Free Tools
- Radiation test evidence for the mission’s orbit, dose, duration, and operating configuration.
- Qualification and screening status for the exact device and package being considered.
- Required compute type and usable resources, plus memory capacity and bandwidth.
- Power, thermal limits, interfaces, and system-level fault recovery.
- In-orbit reconfiguration needs and the validation process for updates.
- Toolchain maturity, supply needs, and mission duration.
AMD’s materials document the XQRVC1902, but they do not provide balanced head-to-head evidence against alternative space processors or FPGAs. They therefore do not support ranking it against competitors or making performance-per-watt comparisons.
