Amazon’s Vulcan is a warehouse robot that uses cameras and force-and-torque sensing to pick and stow inventory in high and low locations inside fulfillment-center storage pods. It is designed to take on specific, physically demanding tasks—not to run a warehouse on its own—while employees handle difficult items, middle shelves and exceptions.
What Vulcan does in an Amazon fulfillment center
Vulcan works with inventory stored in pods: movable shelving units divided into bins. Its job is to place items into those bins during stowing and retrieve items during picking. Amazon describes it as a system that can work at the top and bottom levels of a pod, where reaching or crouching can be physically demanding for employees.

That makes Vulcan a targeted manipulation system, not a general-purpose robot. It does not take over every warehouse activity, and its role depends on the item and the conditions in a bin.

How Vulcan combines touch and vision
Force and torque sensing
Amazon Science says Vulcan’s end-of-arm tools measure force and torque along all six axes. Those readings help the robot detect contact and adjust its movement before it applies excessive force. The practical difference is that Vulcan can use physical feedback while handling items or contacting the pod, rather than relying on images alone.

Cameras and machine learning
Stereo cameras create a three-dimensional model of the contents of a pod. Machine-learning models identify bins, objects, elastic bands and available space. Vulcan then uses that visual information together with force feedback to guide a pick or placement.
Different tools for picking and stowing
- Vulcan Stow: A gripper with conveyor belts and an extensible blade can move items aside to make room for an item being put away.
- Vulcan Pick: A suction device and depth camera help retrieve items from bins.
Amazon Robotics director of applied science Aaron Parness described the combination as “using a sense of touch in addition to vision.” That is the system’s defining distinction from many traditional industrial robots, which are designed to avoid contact rather than use it as feedback.

Amazon says Vulcan can handle the highest and lowest pod levels so employees can spend more time in an ergonomic “power zone” rather than climbing ladders or crouching. The intended division of work is complementary:

- Vulcan handles many high- and low-level picks and stows.
- Employees focus on middle shelves and operations that are especially challenging, such as densely packed bins or fluid containers.
- If Vulcan cannot move an item, it can request a human partner to take over.
That design can reduce some awkward reaches and ladder climbing, but it does not establish that all warehouse work becomes easier or that every physically demanding task disappears. Amazon presents Vulcan as a way to improve ergonomics and operational efficiency while keeping people involved in work the robot cannot reliably complete.
Is Vulcan replacing warehouse workers?
Vulcan automates a limited set of pick-and-stow actions, but Amazon’s own description keeps employees in the process for difficult items, middle-shelf work and exceptions. The available description therefore supports a narrower conclusion than “robots are replacing warehouse workers”: Vulcan is intended to shift particular tasks and change how work is divided, while the overall effect on staffing at individual sites is not specified.

Amazon also says robotics has created hundreds of job categories. It names roles such as robotic floor monitor and onsite reliability maintenance engineer. These examples illustrate work associated with operating and maintaining automated systems; they do not establish how many positions exist at a given facility or how Vulcan affects total employment there.

In its 2025 announcement, Amazon said Vulcan was operating at fulfillment centers in Spokane, Washington, and Hamburg, Germany, and described plans to deploy it across Europe, the United Kingdom and the United States over the following years. Those statements identify initial operating locations and a planned expansion; they do not, by themselves, confirm the robot’s current footprint at every site.

Amazon Science’s technical account described a Spokane pilot with six Vulcan Stow robots, a planned 30-robot beta at that facility, and a larger German deployment involving both Vulcan Stow and Vulcan Pick. These are deployment details from the technical account, not a count of robots across Amazon’s network.
What Amazon’s broader robotics figures mean
Amazon reported in 2025 that it had deployed more than 750,000 robots over the previous dozen years and that robots played a role in completing 75% of customer orders. These are company-wide figures about Amazon’s robotics operations, not Vulcan-specific measures. They do not show what share of orders Vulcan handles or how much it changes the speed or cost of a particular fulfillment center.
What to watch as Vulcan scales
- Task boundaries: Which items and bin conditions Vulcan can handle without human intervention.
- Human handoffs: How often employees need to resolve a pick or stow the robot cannot complete.
- Ergonomics: Whether shifting high- and low-level work changes employees’ exposure to climbing and awkward reaches.
- Technical work: How the spread of robotics affects monitoring, troubleshooting and maintenance roles.
- Deployment: Whether Amazon’s announced expansion plans translate into additional operating sites.
For now, Vulcan is best understood as a tactile pick-and-stow system for selected tasks in pod-based fulfillment—not as a fully autonomous warehouse or a replacement for the employees who handle exceptions.
