You follow game creator Daiki Shinjo and six women whose lives become connected to a new wave of disappearances that resembles an unsolved case from 13 years earlier. The game uses branching choices, a perspective-switching system called “zapping,” filmed scenes, still photographs, and 360-degree video rather than action combat.
The Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and PlayStation 5 editions launched on September 17, 2026. Nintendo’s US store displays September 16, which is a regional store-date presentation. The Steam version is scheduled for October 20, 2026, in Pacific Daylight Time, after a delay for the platform’s review and approval process.

What kind of game is AKIBA LOST?
AKIBA LOST is a choice-driven, live-action suspense story presented in the style of a sound novel. Steam categorizes it as an FMV, interactive-fiction, and single-player adventure. “FMV” means full-motion video: filmed performances and scenes carry much of the story, while the player decides how to proceed.

It is not an action game. The central activities are watching scenes, examining information, choosing responses, and changing viewpoint to understand what several characters are doing during the same period. The setting is Akihabara, a district associated with games, electronics, cafés, idols, cosplay, shrines, food culture, and online communities. Those subcultures are represented through the main cast rather than treated as background decoration.

- Winner of the Japan Game Award 2025 Future Division
The publisher describes the production as a multi-perspective suspense adventure. Instead of experiencing the mystery through one investigator, you repeatedly move among seven principal viewpoints. A decision made in one character’s route can alter what happens in another route, so the order in which you follow events matters.
The story: a new disappearance echoes an old case
The Akiba Vanishing
Thirteen years before the main story, six girls disappeared in Akihabara. The case, known as “The Akiba Vanishing,” remains unsolved when the present-day events begin.
Game creator Daiki Shinjo unveils a new title inspired by that case at a game show. Soon afterward, people begin disappearing again. Shinjo receives a threatening phone call warning him to stop development or the earlier tragedy will be repeated. His sister Aoi then vanishes, turning the subject of his game into an immediate personal crisis.

The game reveals information through separate character routes, so a scene that looks ordinary from one viewpoint may acquire a different meaning after you switch to someone else.
The seven main perspectives
Daiki and the six women form the game’s principal viewpoints. Each character is tied to a recognizable part of Akihabara’s culture, giving the story different social settings and reasons for the characters to cross paths.
| Character | Role in the story | Actor |
|---|---|---|
| Daiki Shinjo | Game creator whose project is based on the Akiba Vanishing; Aoi’s brother | Hiromitsu Kitayama |
| Aoi Shinjo | Works at a maid café and becomes central to the new disappearance | Sayuri Matsumura |
| Yukimi | Game streamer | Momoko Tanabe |
| Moe | Food writer | Misato Ugaki |
| Kokone | Underground idol | Yui Oguri (AKB48) |
| Chihiro | Shrine maiden | Azusa Ohara |
| Wakana | Cosplayer | MINA (East Of Eden) |
The publisher and cast announcements identify these performers as the named principal cast. The six women are not interchangeable narrators: their jobs, communities, and access to information create different routes through the same central mystery.
How AKIBA LOST gameplay works
1. Switch viewpoints with “zapping”
The publisher calls the perspective-switching system “zapping.” During the story, you can move between Daiki and the six women to see events unfolding during the same general period. A route may show what one person was doing while another character’s scene was taking place elsewhere.

This structure is important because the game is built around incomplete knowledge. One character may hear a warning, witness a meeting, or make a choice that another character does not yet understand. Switching lets you assemble those pieces instead of waiting for a single narrator to explain everything.
2. Make choices that branch across routes
Choices change the story. Their effects are not limited to the character currently on screen: the publisher says a decision can affect other characters’ paths as well. That means a selection may change what information becomes available, which events occur, or how another viewpoint develops later.
Because routes overlap in time, the game rewards paying attention to names, locations, conversations, and apparent contradictions. If you reach a scene that seems to omit an explanation, another character’s route may supply the missing context. The branching design also means that seeing one outcome does not necessarily reveal every event in the wider story.
3. Read a hybrid of filmed scenes and still images
AKIBA LOST combines live-action video with still-image sequences. The publisher describes the overall format as a sound novel, while Steam presents it as an FMV adventure. In practice, expect the rhythm to change between filmed performances, photographic storytelling, dialogue, and player decisions rather than continuous 3D exploration.

That is a publisher-reported production figure, not an independent audit. An earlier January 2026 package announcement referred to selecting from 100,000 stills; later launch and Steam announcements gave the completed-production figure of approximately 200,000 captured images. The later figure is the appropriate one when describing the finished project, with the earlier number understood as an earlier production-stage reference.
4. View scenes through a 360-degree camera
Some events use 360-degree camera footage. The view is presented from the perspective of the character you currently control, so looking around can be part of understanding a scene. This is different from a conventional fixed-camera cutscene: the framing is intended to put you inside the character’s position while the event unfolds around you.
The available descriptions do not establish a separate virtual-reality mode or motion-control requirement. The confirmed feature is a 360-degree presentation inside the game’s perspective system.

Steam lists Japanese full audio. Its interface and subtitle languages are English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Nintendo’s US listing identifies the same five supported languages for its editions.
Language support can vary by platform storefront and region, so check the exact listing for the edition you intend to buy. “Japanese full audio” does not mean that every spoken line is available in English; the published information specifically confirms Japanese voice audio and the listed interface/subtitle languages.

Standard physical packages
The publisher announced standard physical packages for Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and PlayStation 5. A standard package is the straightforward choice if you want the game on a specific console without the additional collector materials or digital bundle items described below.
Japanese-market Special Collection Box
The Special Collection Box is a Japanese-market package, not a confirmed international retail edition. It contains a game copy for one selected console, a 200-page photo artbook, a making-of DVD, an in-game digital-item code, a digital soundtrack, and stickers.
Recommended Free Tools
The publisher’s January 2026 announcement listed ¥19,580 including tax for the Special Collection Box and ¥6,480 including tax for the standard package. These are Japanese publisher prices. They are not current international retail prices, do not establish shipping or import costs, and do not confirm stock at any particular retailer.
Nintendo Digital Deluxe Edition
Nintendo’s Digital Deluxe Edition includes:
- The game
- The original soundtrack
- All six episodes of the related television drama
- Two pixel-character costume sets
Nintendo says the soundtrack contains 31 in-game background tracks. The publisher says the drama was produced with Nippon Television to expand the project’s story and presentation. The documented contents apply to Nintendo’s Digital Deluxe listing; do not assume that the same bundle exists on Steam or PlayStation 5.

How large was the production?
IzanagiGames reports that development took six years and involved more than 200 cast and crew members. It also reports approximately 200,000 still images captured during production. These numbers describe the publisher’s production account, not independently verified measurements.
Producer and IzanagiGames CEO Shinsuke Umeda said at the September 17, 2026 release announcement: “This is a game created by bringing together the efforts of more than 200 cast and crew members over six years of planning.” That English sentence is a translation of his Japanese statement, rather than an official English-language quote.
The Special Collection Box’s artbook has 200 pages, while Nintendo’s Digital Deluxe soundtrack has 31 in-game background tracks. Those are package specifications, separate from the broader production totals.
Which version should you choose?
Choose a console edition if you want to play immediately on a supported system
The Switch, Switch 2, and PlayStation 5 versions share the September 17, 2026 publisher launch date. Choose the console that you already use and verify the local store listing for language availability. Nintendo’s US date display of September 16 is a regional presentation difference, not a separate story or edition.
Choose Steam if you prefer PC and can wait for the later launch
Steam is scheduled for October 20, 2026 PDT. The later date reflects the publisher’s October 9 notice about the review and approval process. Its listing confirms Japanese full audio and the five interface/subtitle languages, but the documented console-specific extras do not automatically carry over to PC.
Choose the Special Collection Box for physical extras
The Japanese-market box is aimed at collectors who specifically want the 200-page photo artbook, making-of DVD, soundtrack, stickers, and digital item. Confirm the console version inside the box, the seller’s region, import costs, and whether the package is still available before ordering.
Choose Nintendo Digital Deluxe for the bundled digital media
Nintendo’s Digital Deluxe Edition is the documented option for the six-episode drama, 31-track original soundtrack, and two pixel-character costume sets. It is distinct from the Japanese physical collector’s package: one emphasizes digital add-ons, while the other contains physical production materials.
What AKIBA LOST is—and is not
- It is: a single-player, branching live-action mystery with seven main perspectives.
- It is: a hybrid of FMV, still images, sound-novel presentation, and 360-degree scenes.
- It is: a story about renewed disappearances connected to the 13-year-old Akiba Vanishing case.
- It is not: an action game built around combat or conventional real-time exploration.
- It is not: a one-viewpoint detective story; the zapping system makes switching among characters a core activity.
- It is not: a game with one universal release date across every platform; console and Steam launches are separated by more than a month.
If you enjoy interactive mysteries in which the same period is reconstructed from conflicting viewpoints, AKIBA LOST’s design is centered on that experience. If you are looking for combat, open-world traversal, or a traditional third-person adventure, its documented format points to a different kind of game.
