AI networking is the high-speed data-center fabric and software that move data between GPUs, servers, storage, and control systems while an AI workload runs across them. It is part of the compute system, not a faster version of a home Wi-Fi router. During large-language-model (LLM) training or inference, accelerators exchange model parameters, gradients, activations, tokens, and results. Network bandwidth, latency, congestion, software integration, and operational reliability determine how much of the accelerators’ theoretical capacity becomes useful work.

What AI networking means

In the infrastructure context, AI networking connects the components of a cluster so many accelerators can behave like one coordinated machine. A model may be split across GPUs in one server, across servers in a rack, or across many racks. The network carries the information required to keep those partitions synchronized.

The term is also used for AI for networking—using machine-learning systems to plan, configure, or troubleshoot networks. That is a related field, but it is different from the networking infrastructure that supports LLMs. This article focuses on the infrastructure meaning.

Network performance is workload-dependent. A link’s advertised rate does not by itself predict training time or token throughput. The useful measurement is end-to-end communication under the actual collective operations, traffic pattern, congestion level, software stack, and failure-recovery requirements of the deployment.

Why LLMs need a network as part of the computer

Distributed training

Training data and model computation are partitioned when one accelerator cannot hold the model or cannot process the required batch quickly enough. GPUs then exchange gradients, parameters, and intermediate activations. Collective operations such as all-reduce, all-gather, and reduce-scatter synchronize those values. As more GPUs participate, the amount and frequency of communication can grow enough that a congested fabric limits the benefit of adding compute.

NVIDIA describes this relationship in its overview of data-center networking for AI: scalable networking is needed as workloads spread over more nodes and as those nodes exchange data and collective communications. The article is vendor-authored and dates from October 12, 2023, so treat it as an explanation of the architecture rather than a neutral benchmark. Inference and model serving

Inference can also be distributed. Tensor parallelism divides operations among accelerators; pipeline parallelism assigns successive model stages to different devices; and a serving system may place replicas on separate servers. Each choice creates a different mix of synchronization and message traffic.

Mixture-of-experts (MoE) models add an especially communication-intensive pattern: tokens are dispatched to selected experts on different GPUs, then the resulting vectors are gathered. NVIDIA’s NVLink discussion describes this as all-to-all GPU communication. That describes a particular MoE implementation, not every LLM; dense models do not automatically perform expert routing. Data access and checkpoints

Training jobs repeatedly read datasets and write checkpoints. Inference services may fetch model weights, conversation state, or retrieval data. Storage traffic competes with accelerator traffic unless the design separates paths or schedules it carefully. NVIDIA’s DSX documentation notes that storage can be remote block, file, or object storage, or locally attached NVMe, and that required storage bandwidth varies with the workload, model, and performance goal. NVIDIA DSX data-center architecture

Scale-up and scale-out are different layers

A useful mental model is to separate two connectivity problems:

Layer What it connects Purpose Examples in NVIDIA’s architecture
Scale-up GPUs within one server or tightly coupled rack domain Provide very fast local communication so the devices can operate as one compute domain NVLink and NVLink-based GPU systems
Scale-out Servers or GPU racks across the data center Join multiple domains into a larger training or inference cluster Ethernet or InfiniBand cluster fabrics, including NVIDIA’s Spectrum-X Ethernet examples

These layers are complementary, not interchangeable. A cluster can use a local GPU fabric inside each rack and a separate cluster-wide fabric between racks. Comparing a rack-local interconnect directly with a data-center network is like comparing a computer’s memory bus with its external network: both move data, but they solve different problems.

NVIDIA summarizes the distinction this way: “Scale-out networks connect servers across the data center. Scale-up networks enable the GPUs inside the domain to behave as a single engine of compute.” The sentence appears in NVIDIA’s article linked above and should be read as the company’s architectural description.

One reference architecture, four networks

NVIDIA’s DSX data-center reference design names four networks. It is one vendor’s terminology, not a universal industry taxonomy.

Network Role Technology identified in the reference design
Tenant Access Network (TAN) Front-end data-center access, used especially by storage and tenant-facing services Ethernet
Secure Management Network (SMN) Out-of-band management, provisioning, and control traffic Ethernet
GPU Cluster Interconnect Network (CIN) East-west communication between GPU racks Ethernet or InfiniBand
NVLink High-bandwidth communication among GPUs within a rack or domain NVIDIA proprietary interconnect

Separating these paths helps operators isolate management and tenant traffic from the synchronization traffic that determines distributed-training efficiency. The exact topology, oversubscription, and routing policy still have to be designed for the chosen hardware and workload.

What actually carries the data

Network I/O and RDMA

Network I/O software and Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) can move data directly between network devices and GPU or host memory, reducing copies through the CPU. The benefit depends on compatible adapters, drivers, libraries, topology, and correct configuration; RDMA is not a universal speed switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Collective-communication software

Training frameworks call collective libraries to perform reductions, gathers, broadcasts, and other group operations. The library chooses algorithms and routes that match the topology. A fast adapter paired with poorly integrated collectives can leave GPUs waiting.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

DPUs and SmartNICs

Data-processing units can offload infrastructure functions such as networking, storage, security, and virtualization from the host CPUs. NVIDIA’s current reference architectures list BlueField-3 DPUs and ConnectX-8 SuperNICs alongside GPU and switch components. Their value is architectural: keeping infrastructure work from competing with model execution, not guaranteeing a fixed percentage improvement.

In-network processing

Some systems perform parts of aggregation or data movement in the network. This can reduce traffic sent to endpoints for suitable collective operations, but it requires matching hardware and software support.

Telemetry and health management

Monitoring link errors, congestion, queue behavior, adapter health, and collective-operation timing is essential. A fabric that is fast in a short test but frequently retries, drops, or requires manual recovery delivers less useful capacity over time. NVIDIA’s Magnum IO stack groups network I/O, RDMA acceleration, storage I/O, in-network computing, and management or telemetry as parts of an accelerated data-center software stack. NVIDIA Magnum IO

Ethernet or InfiniBand?

There is no universal winner established by the available evidence. Both appear as viable CIN choices in NVIDIA’s reference architecture. Select a fabric by measuring the communication pattern and operating constraints of the intended cluster.

Decision axis Questions to answer
Workload pattern Does the job emphasize training collectives, latency-sensitive inference, or MoE all-to-all traffic?
Bandwidth and latency under load What does application-level throughput look like while other jobs create congestion, rather than when one link is idle?
Scale-up versus scale-out role Are you comparing fabrics serving the same layer and topology?
Software and collectives Do drivers, RDMA paths, routing, and collective libraries support the model framework and chosen algorithms?
Congestion behavior How does the design handle incast, oversubscription, queue buildup, and traffic from multiple tenants?
Reliability and observability Can operators detect failed links, unhealthy adapters, and degraded collectives quickly?
Interoperability and operations How well does the fabric fit existing skills, tools, cabling, and maintenance procedures?
Cost and procurement What are the complete costs of adapters, switches, optics, software, support, power, and spare capacity for this deployment?

How to evaluate a proposed LLM network

  1. Define the parallelism. Document whether the model uses data, tensor, pipeline, expert, or another form of parallelism. Record the number of GPUs per server, rack, and cluster.
  2. Map the traffic. Identify which messages are local to a rack, which cross racks, and which share links with storage, tenant, or management traffic.
  3. Measure application operations. Test the actual collectives and inference exchanges at realistic message sizes, concurrency, and user-interaction targets. Link-rate tests alone are insufficient.
  4. Test congestion and failure behavior. Introduce competing traffic, restart links or adapters in a controlled environment, and verify that jobs recover or fail predictably.
  5. Validate the software path. Check drivers, firmware, RDMA settings, collective libraries, container images, schedulers, and telemetry integration as a single stack.
  6. Account for storage. Measure dataset reads, checkpoint writes, model loading, and retrieval traffic alongside GPU communication.
  7. Plan operations. Define alert thresholds, replacement procedures, upgrade windows, and ownership for each network layer.

What current NVIDIA examples illustrate

NVIDIA’s GB300 NVL72 enterprise reference architecture is a named example of tightly integrated compute, networking, and software. It lists GB300 NVL72 systems, BlueField-3 DPUs, ConnectX-8 SuperNICs, Spectrum-X Ethernet, AI Enterprise software, Mission Control, and NVLink. It demonstrates how a production design combines accelerators, fabrics, management, and software; it is not a neutral survey of all vendors or architectures. NVIDIA NVL72 AI Factory reference architecture

NVIDIA’s NVLink article reports up to 3.6 TB/s of bidirectional bandwidth per GPU and 260 TB/s of rack-level GPU bandwidth for its 72-accelerator Vera Rubin NVL72 domain. Those are specifications for the named system, not typical figures for every data-center network. The same article reports up to 2.3× higher decode throughput for NVLink 6 versus off-the-shelf Ethernet in a 72-accelerator scale-up domain. NVIDIA states that the comparison is simulation-based, including a simulated 2-trillion-parameter model and named model cases at specified user-interactivity levels. Treat it as a bounded vendor simulation result, not an independently verified or universal benchmark. NVIDIA NVLink performance discussion

Hardware and cabling considerations

A concrete enterprise adapter example is NVIDIA’s ConnectX-7 400G network adapter, listed in NVIDIA’s planning resources for cloud, data-center, and edge networking. It is specialized infrastructure hardware; compatibility with the GPU server, switch, firmware, operating system, and chosen fabric must be checked before procurement. NVIDIA Networking Planning Resources

LinkX cables and transceivers are available for Ethernet and InfiniBand interconnects, but a generic cable recommendation is unsafe. Match every optic or cable to the port type, signaling speed, electrical or optical medium, reach, switch, adapter, and environmental requirements of the deployment.

Common mistakes

  • Upgrading a home router. A consumer router does not make a cloud-hosted chatbot smarter or faster; the relevant network is inside the provider’s data center.
  • Comparing unlike layers. NVLink, Ethernet, and InfiniBand are not always substitutes because they may serve scale-up or scale-out roles.
  • Quoting peak bandwidth as application speed. Collective latency, congestion, software overhead, and synchronization determine delivered throughput.
  • Assuming every LLM uses MoE. All-to-all expert traffic is specific to architectures that route tokens among experts.
  • Ignoring storage and management. Checkpoints, model loading, telemetry, and recovery traffic can affect job completion even when GPU links are fast.
  • Generalizing a vendor result. Keep the system size, model, user-interaction target, simulation status, and measurement source attached to every performance claim.

AI for networking: the adjacent meaning

LLMs can also be applied to networking tasks. A 2023 survey covers natural-language-to-network-language translation, network planning, domain adaptation, and external tool use. It highlights that network-configuration formats are not standardized and that generated actions require validation before execution. The paper is a research survey and preprint, not evidence that a proposed framework is a mature production system. Large Language Models for Networking: Applications, Enabling Techniques, and Challenges

Keeping the two meanings separate prevents a common misunderstanding: AI networking for LLMs is the physical and software fabric that moves model data, while AI for networking uses models to assist people who design or operate that fabric.
