A robo-adviser is one consumer example, but it is not a synonym for every AI investing system.
These tools do not make decisions from “intelligence” alone. They receive data and assumptions, apply rules or a model, and return an output such as a research shortlist, asset allocation, portfolio adjustment or trade. The result is only as appropriate as the information, objective and safeguards behind it.

What “AI investing” includes
The phrase can describe several different activities:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Investment research: software can organize or prioritize market information for an analyst or investor.
- Portfolio construction: a model can translate goals, time horizon and risk tolerance into a proposed mix of assets.
- Portfolio management: an automated service can monitor holdings and generate rebalancing or other adjustment instructions.
- Trading: a system can turn market data and predefined signals into orders.
- Financial planning: calculators and planning models can project scenarios and illustrate how assumptions affect outcomes.
“Algorithm” is the broadest term in this list. A rule such as “rebalance when an asset class moves five percentage points from its target” is algorithmic automation, but it is not necessarily machine learning or generative AI. Machine-learning systems infer patterns from data, while generative AI produces new text, code or other content. A platform may use one of these methods, several together, or only conventional rules while marketing itself with the word “AI.”

FINRA’s report Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Securities Industry, published June 10, 2020, described uses in curated market research, portfolio management and trading. It also reported that retail digital investment recommendations at that time largely used rules-based models. That dated observation is useful for understanding the range of systems, not a current census of every platform in 2026.
How an algorithm turns information into an investment action
Most automated investment processes follow a simple chain:
- Inputs enter the system. These may include a client questionnaire, account and portfolio data, prices, company information, economic indicators or a set of investment constraints.
- The system applies rules or a model. It may score securities, estimate risk, optimize a target allocation, classify text or compare current holdings with desired weights.
- The model produces an output. Depending on the product, that output might be a research priority list, a proposed allocation, a rebalance notice, a planning projection or a trade instruction.
- A person or an automated account acts on it. The action may require investor approval, adviser oversight or no additional approval under the account agreement.
- New data feeds the next cycle. Market moves, deposits, withdrawals and changed questionnaire answers can cause the system to recalculate.
This chain explains why a confident-looking recommendation is not proof of a sound investment. Every stage embeds choices: which data to collect, which data to ignore, how to define risk, what objective to optimize and when to act. Regulators describe these capabilities without establishing that a particular model is accurate or profitable.
Where investors encounter algorithmic investing
| Use | Typical inputs | Possible output | What the investor should verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Research support | Market information, company information and other financial data | Prioritized or curated research material | How sources are selected, how current they are and whether a person reviews the result |
| Portfolio recommendation | Goals, time horizon, financial information and risk tolerance | Suggested asset allocation and investments | Whether the questionnaire captures the investor’s complete circumstances |
| Portfolio management | Current holdings, target weights, deposits, withdrawals and market prices | Rebalancing or other portfolio adjustments | Trading frequency, tax treatment, costs and the conditions that trigger changes |
| Trading system | Prices, signals, constraints and order instructions | Orders or trade suggestions | Execution controls, liquidity assumptions, losses and who can stop the system |
| Financial planning | Income, assets, spending, goals and model assumptions | Scenario projections or savings guidance | Which assumptions drive the projection and how sensitive the result is to changes |
Are robo-advisers really using AI?
A robo-adviser is an online investment program that generally gathers a person’s goals, investment horizon, income and other assets, and tolerance for risk through a questionnaire. The program then creates and manages a portfolio. That description comes from the SEC’s February 23, 2017 Investor Bulletin on robo-advisers.

The label does not identify the underlying technology. A robo-adviser can rely on a transparent set of allocation rules, an optimization routine, machine-learning components or a combination. The SEC has emphasized that services, investing approaches and features differ among providers, so the word “robo” does not tell you how much artificial intelligence is involved.
In practical terms, focus on the service’s inputs, portfolio method and controls rather than its branding. Ask what information the questionnaire collects, how often the portfolio is reviewed, what causes a rebalance and whether a qualified person is available when your circumstances fall outside the model.
The personal information an automated tool may miss
The SEC and FINRA’s May 8, 2015 Investor Alert on Automated Investment Tools warns that an automated recommendation may not account for a person’s full situation. Potential gaps include:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Age and broader financial situation or needs
- Investment experience
- Other accounts and holdings
- Tax situation
- Ability and willingness to tolerate losses
- Time horizon
- Liquidity needs
- Specific financial goals
A short questionnaire can therefore produce a precise-looking percentage allocation while omitting facts that would change the decision. Someone saving for a near-term home purchase, managing concentrated employer stock or facing an unusual tax constraint may need analysis that a generic form does not capture. Before accepting an output, read the assumptions and identify which facts the service never asked about.

The objective matters as much as the model
An algorithm is optimized for a stated objective. That objective might be diversification, minimizing tracking error, increasing engagement, generating trades or recommending products available through the firm. Two systems can receive similar data and produce different answers because their objectives, constraints and incentives differ.
In remarks on August 13, 2024, SEC Chair Gary Gensler discussed how predictive analytics in brokerage applications and advisory services could create conflicts when systems are optimized in ways that put a firm’s interests ahead of investors. This is a risk and incentive issue, not proof that every automated service acts against its customers. It means investors should ask what the firm is rewarded for and whether the model’s goals are disclosed.
Can AI choose stocks or manage a portfolio for you?
It can generate a stock screen, allocation proposal, rebalance instruction or trade, depending on the product’s design and the authority granted to it. That capability does not establish that the output will outperform a benchmark, avoid losses or match your needs. The regulator materials cited here do not provide a universal return estimate or a comparable study showing that AI improves investment performance.

How to evaluate an AI-enabled investing service
The SEC’s robo-adviser guidance suggests comparing services on the features that determine whether a portfolio fits you. Work through these questions before depositing money:
- What does it manage? Confirm whether the service handles a taxable brokerage account, retirement account, cash, specific securities or only planning calculations.
- How is the portfolio built? Read the stated investment approach, asset classes, diversification rules and rebalancing method. Distinguish a rules-based allocation from claims about machine learning or generative AI.
- What information drives the recommendation? Review every questionnaire field and the assumptions about goals, horizon, income, other assets, taxes, liquidity and loss tolerance.
- What are the costs? Identify advisory charges, fund expenses, trading costs, spreads, account fees and any other recurring or one-time charges. A low advertised management fee does not describe the total cost by itself.
- Is there a minimum balance? A minimum can determine whether the service is usable for your account size and whether you can keep the account open after withdrawals.
- How much human help is available? Find out whether support is limited to customer service, includes a credentialed professional or offers individualized advice, and when that help is available.
- What disclosures can you inspect? Review the adviser’s Form ADV Part 1 and Part 2 brochure. These documents describe services, fees, conflicts and disciplinary information.
- Can you verify registration? Use the SEC’s Investment Adviser Public Disclosure (IAPD) database and FINRA BrokerCheck when an adviser or brokerage professional is involved. Check the entity and the individual, not just the app’s name.
- What happens when circumstances change? Learn how to update your answers, report a new goal, pause automated trading, request a withdrawal and reach a person during a market disruption.
A practical fit check before accepting a recommendation
After the system proposes a portfolio, compare it with your own situation in a separate review. Write down the goal and date when the money is needed, the amount that must remain liquid, accounts and holdings outside the service, tax considerations and the largest loss you could tolerate without abandoning the plan. Then check whether the model asked for, used and correctly interpreted each item.
Inspect the actual holdings rather than relying on a risk label. Look for unintended concentration, investments you cannot explain, frequent trading, leverage or a mismatch between the portfolio’s volatility and the time available to recover from a loss. If the tool cannot explain its recommendation in understandable terms, treat that opacity as a reason to slow down and seek independent advice.

Warning signs of AI investment fraud
Artificial intelligence gives scammers a persuasive story: a secret model, an exclusive bot or a system that supposedly cannot lose. The joint SEC, North American Securities Administrators Association and FINRA investor alert dated January 25, 2024 warns that criminals may exploit AI’s popularity and complexity to attract investors.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
The alert’s exact warning is: Claims of high guaranteed investment returns with little or no risk are classic warning signs of fraud.
Treat promises of guaranteed gains, little or no risk, urgent deposits, unverifiable performance screenshots or pressure to keep the method secret as reasons to stop. Do not send account credentials, identity documents or sensitive financial details to an unverified platform. Verify the firm and the people behind it through official registration records before sharing information or money.
What “trustworthy” can and cannot mean
Trust should refer to a process you can inspect, not to an impressive model name. A more credible service explains its data, assumptions, fees, conflicts, rebalancing rules, security practices and escalation path. It provides disclosures and a verifiable legal entity. Those qualities reduce avoidable risks; they do not guarantee a positive investment result.
You also need a boundary for automation. A simple, diversified allocation with clear rebalancing rules may be easier to monitor than a complex system whose signals you cannot understand. Conversely, a person with unusual tax, liquidity or estate-planning needs may require professional judgment that a standardized algorithm cannot supply.

For readers who want a hands-on technical explanation, Build a Robo-Advisor with Python (From Scratch) by Rob Reider and Alexander Michalka, published by Manning in 2025, covers portfolio construction and optimization, rebalancing, tax-loss harvesting, AI and Monte Carlo financial planning, and reinforcement learning. The book is aimed at readers with basic Python and finance knowledge. It is educational material about building automated tools, not evidence of investment returns and not a recommendation to trade.
Bottom line
AI investing describes a toolbox, not a single product or strategy. Algorithms can organize research, translate stated goals into a portfolio, monitor holdings and generate trades. Their outputs depend on the data collected, the assumptions made and the objective chosen by the firm. Before relying on one, examine the missing personal information, total costs, portfolio fit, human support, disclosures and registration. Treat guaranteed-return claims as a fraud warning, and never confuse an automated recommendation with proof that an investment will make money.
