In crypto, an agent may read on-chain data, propose a portfolio rebalance, request your approval, or use delegated wallet authority to submit a transaction. The label alone does not tell you which of those powers it has. Coinbase Institute defines agentic AI as autonomous software that “can sense their environment, make decisions, and take action toward specific goals,” while Ethereum.org describes crypto agents as programs that can use wallets, smart contracts and on-chain activity. The practical question is therefore not simply whether a product is “AI,” but what it can sign, where it can transact, and which controls remain with you.
How agentic finance works in crypto
A conventional analytics tool stops after producing information. A rule-based trading bot can follow a fixed instruction repeatedly. An agentic system is usually presented as a broader loop: it interprets changing information, selects among possible steps, and pursues an objective. There is no universal technical boundary between a bot and an agent, so treat the distinction as a spectrum of adaptability and delegated authority rather than a formal industry standard.

Coinbase Institute’s definition is a useful starting point: “Agentic AI refers to autonomous software agents that can sense their environment, make decisions, and take action toward specific goals.” In crypto, the environment can include token prices, liquidity, wallet balances, smart-contract state and other on-chain data. The goal might be portfolio management, liquidity rebalancing or arbitrage. Ethereum.org likewise describes agents as programs that use AI to perform tasks or make decisions, with wallets, smart contracts and on-chain activity forming possible parts of the system.

- Observe: The software collects permitted information, such as market data, on-chain balances, liquidity conditions or the state of a smart contract.
- Decide: A model or policy interprets that information against a stated objective, such as maintaining target allocations. It may produce a recommendation, a transaction proposal or a sequence of actions.
- Authorize: The system either pauses for your approval or uses authority that was delegated in advance. This is the point at which a marketing claim about an “AI agent” becomes a concrete security question.
- Act and report: The agent signs or submits an eligible transaction, then records the result for monitoring. A failure, unexpected state change or rejected transaction should trigger a defined pause or escalation path.
Cardano’s developer documentation describes the most autonomous version: an on-chain agent can hold a wallet and send transactions without a human in the loop. Other implementations never receive signing authority; they only analyze or prepare an action for a person to execute.

Four authority levels to identify before connecting an account
The phrase “AI agent” does not reveal how much control a service has. Ask which level applies to the specific feature and account type you are considering.
| Authority level | What the software can do | What remains with you |
|---|---|---|
| Analysis | Read permitted data and explain conditions or possible trades. | You decide, sign and submit every transaction. |
| Proposal | Prepare an order or smart-contract call for your review. | You inspect the details and authorize the transaction. |
| Approved execution | Execute within rules after a required approval, such as a confirmation for each trade. | You retain an approval step and can reject the proposed action. |
| Autonomous execution | Use delegated signing authority to submit transactions without asking each time. | You define permissions beforehand and must monitor, pause or revoke them. |
Do not infer custody from a user interface. Determine whether keys are held by you, an account-abstraction wallet, an exchange or another service; whether the agent can move assets or only call a limited contract; and whether revocation works immediately. A system can be highly autonomous while still constrained to a narrow set of contracts, assets or spending limits.
What an agent might do with a crypto portfolio
Portfolio management
An agent could compare current holdings with target allocations, identify drift and prepare trades to restore those targets. The useful output is not merely “buy” or “sell,” but the data used, the proposed amounts, the destination contracts and the conditions that would cancel the action.
Liquidity rebalancing
For a liquidity position, software may monitor pool conditions and propose moving funds when the configured policy says the position no longer fits its objective. Any such move can involve smart-contract risk, changing fees and a different exposure profile; an automated decision does not remove those underlying risks.

Arbitrage and multi-step transactions
An agent may look for a price difference across venues and assemble one or more transactions. “Found an opportunity” is not the same as “completed a profitable trade”: liquidity, slippage, contract behavior, network conditions and failed legs can change the outcome before settlement.
Account operations
Some systems focus on operational tasks rather than discretionary trading, such as moving funds between approved addresses or maintaining a programmed balance. These actions can still be consequential if an address, contract or permission is misconfigured.
Agentic AI versus a trading bot
A bot commonly repeats explicit rules: for example, place an order when a threshold is reached and cancel it under another condition. An agent is often described as choosing among several steps in pursuit of a broader goal, potentially using language or other models to interpret unstructured information. In practice, products combine both approaches. A model may select a strategy while deterministic code enforces limits and submits transactions.
Because the sources do not establish a single technical definition, evaluate the implementation rather than the label. Ask whether the system can change its plan, what inputs it can access, whether its output is deterministic, and whether a human must approve the final transaction. A fixed strategy with an AI-generated explanation may be less autonomous than the term “agent” suggests; a wallet-connected service may be more consequential even if its interface looks like a simple bot.

Wallet and smart-contract controls that can limit an agent
Ethereum.org documents several ways to keep an agent’s authority bounded. Smart accounts based on account abstraction, including EIP-4337 designs, can support spending limits, address or contract whitelists, session keys and granular permissions. A smart contract can also enforce programmed constraints, such as which assets or methods may be used.
“These controls enable the deployment of agents that are not unbounded.”
That sentence describes possible wallet- and contract-level guardrails, not a guarantee that a particular service implements them correctly. A limit can be too broad, a whitelist can contain a malicious contract, and a software flaw can bypass an intended policy. Confirm the exact permission model, the default limits, who can change them and how quickly a compromised session can be revoked.

A constrained agent can still make a poor investment decision or execute a permitted transaction at the wrong time.

How to evaluate an agent before granting trading authority
1. Map the complete transaction path
- List every source the agent can read: wallet balances, exchange accounts, price feeds and on-chain contracts.
- Identify where a transaction is assembled, signed and broadcast.
- Record whether the agent can transfer assets, approve token spending, borrow, provide liquidity or call arbitrary contract methods.
- Check which networks, exchanges, assets and trading pairs are actually supported.
2. Inspect permissions, not promises
- Look for spending caps, session expiration, asset and contract allowlists, and separate permissions for reading and writing.
- Find the pause, revoke and emergency-withdrawal procedures before connecting funds.
- Confirm whether a policy change requires a fresh approval and whether old session keys remain valid.
3. Test the human approval boundary
Run the system with a small, disposable account if the design permits it. Read the exact transaction data presented for approval, including destination, method, asset and amount. A “one-click approval” that hides these fields is materially different from a reviewable proposal. Robinhood’s support documentation describes trade approvals as a safety control and says users remain responsible when an AI agent places orders; that is an example of a service-specific policy, not a universal rule.
4. Separate evidence types
Ask whether performance figures are live, prospective results or merely hypothetical and backtested. Coinbase’s Trading Arena risk disclosure, last updated April 6, 2026, says users are responsible for trading decisions and that hypothetical or backtested results are not a reliable indicator of future results. A backtest can reveal how a rule would have behaved under its assumptions; it cannot establish future profitability, execution quality or safety.
5. Check operational resilience
- Determine what happens when a price feed is unavailable, a transaction reverts or a network is congested.
- Check whether the agent retries automatically and whether retries could duplicate an action.
- Verify that activity logs show the input, decision, authorization and final transaction hash.
- Confirm how support handles a stuck transaction, compromised key or erroneous contract call.
Risks that autonomy does not remove
Model and strategy risk
An agent can misread data, pursue the wrong objective or optimize a proxy that does not match your investment goal. Natural-language explanations may sound convincing without proving that the underlying decision is sound.
Smart-contract and permission risk
Delegated authority expands the impact of a bug, malicious contract or incorrect allowance. A whitelist narrows the destination set but does not certify every listed contract.
Best Value
Market and execution risk
Crypto prices and liquidity can change while an agent is deciding or waiting for settlement. A proposed arbitrage or rebalance can fail, execute at a worse price or leave only one leg completed.
Accountability and legal risk
Service terms may place trading responsibility on the user even when software makes the decision. Eligibility can also depend on account type, jurisdiction, network and tradable pair. Robinhood, for example, documents restrictions for crypto trades by eligible account types and tradable pairs; do not generalize those conditions to every provider.
Experimental technology risk
Ethereum.org’s July 17, 2026 update characterizes AI agents and related tools as early and experimental. Features, supported networks and permission designs can change, so review current documentation immediately before granting access.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A safer rollout pattern
- Start read-only: Connect no signing capability and verify that the agent’s observations match primary account and on-chain records.
- Use a segregated account: Keep only an amount you can afford to lose in an account created for the experiment. Do not expose unrelated holdings.
- Constrain actions: Apply the narrowest asset, contract, amount and time permissions available. Prefer expiring session keys and explicit allowlists.
- Require approval first: Run proposal or approved-execution mode long enough to inspect decisions and transaction data.
- Set monitoring and a kill switch: Decide who receives alerts, what event pauses the agent and how permissions are revoked.
- Increase authority only with evidence: Move to autonomous execution only after you have observed the logs, failure handling and approval behavior under real but limited conditions.
This process limits the blast radius; it does not turn an agent into a reliable investment adviser or remove the possibility of loss.
Developer and infrastructure considerations
Developers building an agent need a clear separation between the model, policy engine and signing layer. The model can interpret information, while deterministic policy code checks balances, destinations, methods and limits before any signer is called. Every decision should be traceable from input through authorization to transaction result.
Automated.Finance documents MCP- and API-based interfaces for crypto operations and DeFi strategies at its AI-agent documentation. Such interfaces can provide building blocks for data access and action requests, but an API connection is not evidence of security, profitability or suitability. Developers should review authentication, key isolation, rate limits, contract validation, replay protection and incident response in the actual implementation.
Questions to ask before trusting a crypto agent
- Can it only analyze, or can it sign and submit transactions?
- Which wallet, exchange, network, asset and contract permissions are active?
- Who controls the keys, and can access be revoked immediately?
- Are spending caps, session expiration and allowlists enforced by code or only described in a policy?
- What exact event requires human approval?
- Are claimed returns live, prospective, hypothetical or backtested?
- What happens when data is stale, a transaction fails or the service goes offline?
- Which account types, jurisdictions and trading pairs are eligible?
- What records let you reconstruct why a decision was made?
Bottom line
Agentic finance describes a capability, not a performance record. In crypto, the meaningful boundary is the move from information to delegated action: an agent may suggest a trade, prepare it for approval or sign it through a constrained wallet. Evaluate that authority, the custody and permission design, the pause and revocation controls, and the quality of evidence behind any strategy. Neither on-chain visibility, autonomy nor a backtest demonstrates that an agent will make profitable or safe investment decisions.
