What Is agentcontroller.exe? Is It Safe, and How to Fix agentcontroller.exe Errors on Windows

agentcontroller.exe is the Windows executable from the independent AgentController project, a companion utility that maps an XInput gamepad to Codex Micro controls. It is not a documented Microsoft Windows component. The project describes version 1 as experimental, unsigned and unaudited, so the filename alone cannot establish that a copy is safe. Verify its origin, signature status and hash before allowing it to run.

What agentcontroller.exe does

AgentController is designed for people using the Codex desktop application with a physical game controller. It observes an XInput-compatible gamepad and acts as a bridge to Codex Micro controls. That makes it a specialist accessory, not a service required by Windows itself.

It is not a Windows core process

Microsoft does not document agentcontroller.exe as a standard Windows process. A copy can legitimately exist in the folder where you extracted or installed the AgentController project, but an executable with the same name in an unexpected location deserves investigation. Malware can use familiar-looking filenames, so location, provenance and behavior matter more than the name.

Supported baseline

Requirement What the project documents
Operating system Windows 10 build 19041 or later, or Windows 11
Host application Codex desktop
Controller protocol An XInput-compatible gamepad
Examples listed as tested 8BitDo Ultimate 2, Xbox Series controller and Flydigi Vader 4 Pro
Full Micro functionality The separately documented CodexMicroVhfUm device-support component and its driver workflow

Other controllers may work, but the project says they require physical validation. A device that appears as generic HID rather than XInput may not be recognized by the bridge.

Is agentcontroller.exe safe?

There is no filename-only yes-or-no answer. The AgentController security notice says: “v1 remains experimental software, continuously rebuilt from an early one-day prototype, and has not received an independent human code or security audit.” The application and its developer driver are unsigned. Those facts do not prove that a release is malicious, but they mean you must rely on a trustworthy source and your own verification rather than a Microsoft publisher signature.

When to treat a copy as untrusted

  • It came from an unrelated download site, a file-sharing link or an unexpected email attachment instead of the project’s official repository or release page.
  • It is stored in a Windows system directory, a temporary folder or another location you do not recognize.
  • Its file size, hash, behavior or included files differ from the official release information.
  • It asks for permissions or installs a driver beyond the documented AgentController and CodexMicroVhfUm workflow.
  • It launches when you have not installed or used AgentController.

Microsoft security guidance treats unsigned files and unfamiliar processes in Windows directories as investigation signals. Process Explorer can help you inspect the running process, its parent process and loaded DLLs when you need more detail.

Verify before running it

  1. Obtain the executable from the official AgentController project repository or its release page. Do not substitute a mirror merely because it has a newer-looking download.
  2. If the release provides a SHA-256 value, calculate the file’s SHA-256 hash and compare the complete value character for character. A mismatch means you should discard the file and obtain a fresh copy.
  3. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab. An absent signature is expected for the documented build, but an unexpected signer or a signature error is a reason to stop.
  4. In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection, install current security intelligence updates and run a scan of the downloaded file or its containing folder.
  5. If the process is already running, inspect its path and command line with Process Explorer. Stop and investigate a copy whose path does not match the release you intentionally installed.

Do not import a certificate supplied by an untrusted source, and do not turn off Windows driver-signing enforcement to make an unknown driver load.

Why Windows blocks or fails to start agentcontroller.exe

Most reported failures fall into five groups: Windows reputation checks reject an unsigned build, the controller is not an XInput device, the optional Micro driver component is absent, a Codex update changed the private interface, or a damaged/mismatched release is being used.

Fix agentcontroller.exe step by step

1. SmartScreen says the app was blocked

SmartScreen commonly warns about software that is unsigned or has little reputation. The warning explains why Windows cannot establish publisher reputation; it is not proof that the file is safe or malicious.

  1. Cancel the prompt and confirm the file’s source, path and SHA-256 value against the official release information.
  2. Scan the file with Windows Security and check its Properties window for unexpected changes.
  3. If the verified file is the intended experimental release, right-click it, select Properties, and look for an Unblock checkbox on the General tab. Use that only when you trust the source and understand that it removes the Mark-of-the-Web flag; it does not add a signature.
  4. Launch it again from the verified project folder. If SmartScreen continues to block it, do not bypass the warning by downloading a repacked copy or disabling SmartScreen system-wide; consult the release notes for a compatible build.

2. The program opens but does not detect your controller

  1. Close AgentController and Codex.
  2. Connect the gamepad directly to the PC, power it on, and select its XInput mode if the controller offers multiple modes.
  3. Press Win+R, enter joy.cpl, and confirm that Windows lists the controller and responds to button or stick tests.
  4. Reconnect the controller before starting the AgentController bridge, then start Codex desktop.
  5. Test with one of the project’s documented baseline devices—8BitDo Ultimate 2, Xbox Series controller or Flydigi Vader 4 Pro—if available. A different device may require physical validation and may expose only a generic HID interface.
  6. Disconnect other gamepads, remappers and virtual-controller utilities temporarily so the bridge has one unambiguous XInput device.

If the controller fails in joy.cpl, the problem is at the Windows, cable, Bluetooth or device-mode level rather than an AgentController mapping. Resolve that detection problem first.

3. Micro controls do not work even though the gamepad is visible

Basic controller detection is separate from full Codex Micro control. The project documents a separate CodexMicroVhfUm device-support component and an unsigned developer driver for that functionality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Read the current CodexMicroVhfUm instructions that match your Codex and Windows versions.
  2. Install only the component and driver package obtained from its documented project source.
  3. Keep Windows driver-signing enforcement enabled. Do not use test mode, a boot option that disables enforcement, or a certificate from an unknown source simply to force installation.
  4. After installation, restart Windows if the component’s instructions require it, reconnect the controller and test the documented Micro action.
  5. Open Device Manager and check for an unknown device or a warning icon. Record the exact device name and error code before changing anything.

If the documented driver cannot load while signing enforcement is on, stop rather than weakening Windows security. That indicates a packaging or compatibility issue that the component maintainer must address.

4. It worked before a Codex update

AgentController relies on an observed private Codex Micro contract rather than a guaranteed public API. A Codex update can change the HID bridge, control layout or accessibility tree without changing Windows itself.

  1. Note the exact Codex version that last worked and the version currently installed.
  2. Read the AgentController release notes and compatibility information for that Codex build.
  3. Install a matching AgentController release from the official project source, or update AgentController when the project documents support for the new Codex version.
  4. Retest with the same controller and connection method. Do not conclude that a different controller proves the Codex compatibility problem is fixed.

A rollback may be appropriate only when it is supported by your Codex installation method and you can obtain the older package from a trustworthy source. Keep automatic updates and security updates in mind when deciding whether to remain on an older build.

5. It crashes, closes immediately or behaves differently from the release notes

  1. Close Codex, AgentController and any controller-remapping utilities.
  2. Disconnect the controller and restart Windows.
  3. Remove the old AgentController folder only after preserving logs you may need for diagnosis.
  4. Download a clean, matching release from the official project source and verify its hash when one is published.
  5. Start Codex first, connect the XInput controller, and then enable the AgentController bridge as documented.
  6. Capture the exact error text, Windows version/build, Codex version, controller model and whether CodexMicroVhfUm is installed. Those details distinguish a launch problem from a private-contract or driver problem.

The project reports 797 automated tests, including 739 WPF application regression tests, but also says physical end-to-end validation is still required. Passing automated tests therefore cannot guarantee that your hardware and current Codex build will work.

How to remove agentcontroller.exe safely

If you no longer use the controller bridge, removal is usually straightforward, but handle the optional driver separately.

  • Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
  1. Exit Codex and AgentController. In Task Manager, confirm that no agentcontroller.exe process remains before deleting files.
  2. If the project supplied an uninstaller, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find the matching entry and choose Uninstall.
  3. If it was a portable release, delete only the verified AgentController folder you created. Do not delete files from C:Windows, C:WindowsSystem32 or another system directory merely because they have a similar name.
  4. Open Task Manager > Startup apps and disable a remaining AgentController entry if you no longer want it to start with Windows.
  5. If CodexMicroVhfUm installed a device or driver, follow that component’s documented removal procedure. In Device Manager, identify the exact associated device before selecting Uninstall device; do not remove unrelated HID or controller drivers.
  6. Restart Windows and confirm that the executable and any expected startup entry are gone. Run a Windows Security scan if the original file came from an untrusted location.

How to evaluate AgentController against another controller utility

Use the same questions for every candidate instead of assuming that a similar filename or feature list means equivalent risk:

Comparison point Why it matters
Publisher and signature status Shows who signed the binary, if anyone, and whether Windows can verify that signature.
Source availability A public repository, reproducible release information and published hashes make provenance easier to check.
Codex-version compatibility AgentController depends on an observed private contract that may change after Codex updates.
Controller protocol Confirm whether the utility expects XInput, generic HID or a fallback mode; the protocol determines which devices can work.
Kernel or virtual-HID driver requirement Drivers increase installation and security considerations. Check signing, permissions and removal instructions before proceeding.
Update cadence Frequent compatibility updates may matter when Codex changes its interface.
Physical end-to-end testing Automated UI tests do not demonstrate that a particular controller and Codex build work together.

What the available testing claim means

The AgentController v1 release documentation reports 797 automated tests passed, of which 739 are WPF application regression tests. That is useful evidence about the tested software paths, but it is not a security audit and does not replace testing the exact controller, Windows build, Codex version and driver state on your PC.

When to stop troubleshooting

  • The executable cannot be traced to the official project release.
  • The SHA-256 value does not match, or the file changes after verification.
  • Windows Security or Process Explorer shows behavior outside the documented controller bridge.
  • Fixing Micro support would require disabling driver-signing enforcement or installing an untrusted certificate.
  • The project has not documented compatibility with your current Codex version and the failure began immediately after an update.

In any of these cases, remove the untrusted copy, preserve relevant logs and wait for a documented compatible release rather than weakening Windows protections.
