A copy in the game’s expected folder, launched by CrossFire and carrying a valid signature, is more consistent with the genuine file. The same name can be copied or renamed, however, so its path, parent process, signature and scan result—not the filename alone—determine whether it is safe.
What aegis64.exe is
Public file inventories associate Aegis64.exe with older CrossFire installations. SteamDB lists it in the Crossfire Europe Content depot beside Aegis.exe; the listed size is 134.32 KiB, and that depot’s last public update was 21 March 2016. ExeFiles identifies a 64-bit executable created by G4Box for Cross Fire 1051 and gives an expected location under C:Program Files (x86)Z8GamesCrossFire.

Those records establish likely provenance, not a universal safety verdict. They are third-party inventories rather than a statement that every file with this name is genuine. Aegis64.exe is not a standard Windows component, so Windows does not need it unless software such as CrossFire installed it.
Why the same name can be dangerous
An executable can be copied to another folder or renamed to look legitimate. Malware and unwanted software can use familiar names to blend into a system. Microsoft’s classification guidance distinguishes unknown software, malware, unwanted software and potentially unwanted applications; an unfamiliar file may remain unrecognized until reputation data is available. A name match therefore cannot prove that a file is harmless.

Is aegis64.exe safe on your PC?
Assess the exact copy that Windows is trying to run. A file beside other CrossFire files in the documented game directory, started by the game, with an intact digital signature and a clean Windows Security result is more consistent with a legitimate installation. A copy in C:Windows, a temporary-download directory, an email attachment, or an unrelated application folder deserves additional scrutiny.
A valid signature supports provenance but does not prove that the file is harmless. Conversely, an absent or invalid signature is a warning, not by itself proof of malware. Do not run a suspicious copy merely to see what it does.
Identify the exact file before changing anything
- Record the full path. In Task Manager, right-click the process and choose Open file location. If Windows displays an application-error dialog instead, copy the path shown there. Also note the parent process when Task Manager provides it.
- Check the installation context. Confirm whether CrossFire is installed. In a normal installation, look for
Aegis.exeand other CrossFire components besideAegis64.exe. A lone copy with no game files is less credible. - Inspect Properties. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and record the file description, product and company fields, version, creation or modification timestamps, and the Digital Signatures tab. Select the signer and choose Details to confirm whether Windows reports that the signature is valid.
- Preserve a hash if support requests one. In PowerShell, run
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 "C:pathAegis64.exe", replacing the path with the one you recorded. Save the resulting hash with the version and timestamps. An internet hash comparison is meaningful only when the publisher or support team supplies the reference value.
Do not upload the file to an unknown “DLL fixer” or EXE-download site for testing. Uploading a game executable can disclose personal information and does not establish that a replacement is trustworthy.

Scan aegis64.exe with Windows Security
Scan the exact file and its parent game directory before launching it. Windows Security’s Virus & threat protection page provides current-threat information, scan history, quick and full scans, quarantine and allowed-threat controls, real-time protection, security-intelligence updates and ransomware-protection settings.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Choose Virus & threat protection and install any available security-intelligence update.
- Use Scan options and select Custom scan if available, then select the folder containing
Aegis64.exe. If Custom scan is not offered in your edition, right-click the file or folder in File Explorer and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender. - Review Current threats and Protection history. Leave a detection in quarantine while you establish its provenance; do not choose Allow on device simply because the filename resembles a game file.
- If the file is still unexplained, run a Full scan. Microsoft recommends a full scan when malware may have been installed.
If you believe a clean file was classified incorrectly, preserve its path, signature details, version and SHA-256 hash and use Microsoft’s malware-sample submission process. Do not restore a quarantined file until you have a documented reason from the game publisher or a trusted support channel.
Fix “Aegis64.exe is missing,” cannot-start and corrupt-file errors
These errors commonly appear when CrossFire launches and the executable has been deleted, quarantined, damaged or replaced by an incompatible version. Repair the complete game installation rather than downloading one file.

1. Check whether security software removed it
Open Windows Security, go to Virus & threat protection and Protection history, and look for an event involving the CrossFire folder. If Defender detected the file, keep it quarantined until you verify the signer and obtain guidance from the official game source. Restoring a detection without that evidence can reintroduce a threat.
2. Use the game’s official repair or verification feature
Open the official CrossFire launcher, select the game, and look for a label such as Repair, Verify or Check files. The exact wording varies by launcher. Let the process finish, then restart Windows and launch the game from the same official launcher. A repair or verification operation can restore a missing component while keeping the rest of the installation together.
3. Reinstall the complete game when repair is unavailable
- Back up any locally stored settings or screenshots that the publisher’s documentation says can be retained.
- Uninstall CrossFire through Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows) or through the game’s own uninstaller.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the game only from its official launcher or publisher source, and install the current package.
- Run Windows Security on the newly installed folder before the first launch.
A complete reinstall replaces the set of game files so their versions match. Depending on the launcher, it may remove local settings; preserve anything the publisher identifies as user data before uninstalling.

4. Do not replace one EXE or DLL from a mirror
Do not download a standalone Aegis64.exe, AegisDll.dll or AegisDll64.dll from a random DLL or EXE website. Microsoft’s guidance is: “Download software only from official vendor websites or the Microsoft Store.” A one-file replacement can leave the installation mismatched and can introduce malware even when the game starts afterward.

When an aegis64.exe alert appears at Windows startup
If the alert began after you removed CrossFire, Windows may be trying to launch an orphaned game entry. It still needs a security check because an unrelated program could be using the same name.
- Uninstall the original game through Settings > Apps > Installed apps or its own uninstaller if it is still listed.
- Open Settings > Apps > Startup and disable a CrossFire or unknown entry that points to the recorded path. In older Windows versions, review the Startup tab in Task Manager.
- Open Task Scheduler, inspect Task Scheduler Library and vendor subfolders, and disable or remove a task only when its action clearly points to the uninstalled game directory. Export a task first if you need a rollback record.
- Run a Windows Security Full scan and review Protection history.
- Restart and confirm whether the alert returns. If it does, record the new path and parent process rather than deleting files at random.
Microsoft says its error and warning messages never include phone numbers. Do not call a number shown in a pop-up claiming to diagnose Aegis64.exe or Windows.
What to send to trusted support
For a publisher or administrator, provide the exact path, the process that launched it, CrossFire version or launcher information, signer and signature status, file size, timestamps, SHA-256 hash, and the Windows Security detection name or scan result. Include whether the error says the file is missing, cannot start or is corrupt, and whether it began after an update, quarantine event or uninstall. This evidence lets support distinguish a damaged game installation from an unrelated file using the same name.
Do not publish personal paths, license keys or account details in a public forum. If a support team asks for the executable, use its documented upload channel and retain the original quarantine record.
