Safe step-by-step scan and cleanup
Follow this sequence for a normal interactive run. Save open work before a cleanup because Windows may need to restart.
- Get a fresh executable. Open Malwarebytes’ AdwCleaner page and download the latest version. If your existing file came from another location, use the fresh download instead.
- Start the program. Double-click the downloaded
adwcleaner_x.x.x.exefile. When User Account Control appears, verify that you intended to start AdwCleaner and approve the prompt. - Accept the license. Read and accept the license screen to reach the main interface.
- Begin the scan. Select Scan Now. Let the scan finish before deciding what to remove.
- Review every detection. Examine the listed item, its category and its location. Select only detections you understand and want removed. A detection is not a reason to quarantine everything automatically; review first.
- Quarantine selected items. Choose Quarantine. AdwCleaner may ask you to save work and restart Windows, so close documents and applications when prompted.
- Restart if requested. Allow the requested restart to complete. Interrupting it can leave the cleanup unfinished.
- Inspect the result. After signing in again, open the scan or cleanup log. You can also use the Log Files tab to review what AdwCleaner detected and what action it took.
Malwarebytes specifically advises against clicking Run Basic Repair unless a Malwarebytes support agent tells you to. That control is not part of the ordinary scan-and-quarantine path and should not be used as a general-purpose fix for an unexplained Windows problem.

How to interpret detections before quarantine
Read the detection name, category and location together. A browser-related entry may explain a changed search page; a PUP entry may identify a bundled application; a preinstalled entry may be software supplied with the computer. The presence of an item in a detection list does not tell you whether you still need it for work or recovery.
If you do not recognize an item, leave it selected only after you understand what it is and what removal means. Preserve the log and ask Malwarebytes support for guidance when the location or name is unclear. Do not manually delete files from browser or system directories simply because their names look suspicious. The documented workflow is review, quarantine, restart when requested and then verify the log.
Where logs and quarantined items are kept

Common mistakes with command-line cleanup
- Running
/cleanwithout saving open work, then losing unsaved changes when a restart is requested. - Using
/norebootand forgetting that postponing the restart can leave cleanup incomplete. - Using
/uninstallbefore reviewing logs or quarantined content, which deletes that stored material. - Assuming
/scanremoves findings. It lists detections; the quarantine action is associated with/clean. - Changing the working path without noting where the resulting logs will be written.

Cleanup requests a restart
Save documents, close applications and allow Windows to restart when prompted. A restart can be part of completing quarantine. After signing in, open the log or the Log Files tab and verify which items were processed.
You are considering Basic Repair
Do not use Run Basic Repair as an experiment. Malwarebytes’ guidance says to click it only when a Malwarebytes support agent instructs you to do so. The documented scan, review, quarantine and restart sequence is the safer default.
You want to remove AdwCleaner after the investigation
Review or export any log and quarantined material you may need first. Then use the documented /uninstall option if you want AdwCleaner and its directories removed. Because that command also deletes quarantined content, running it before reviewing those files can eliminate information useful for support or recovery.

What not to do when fixing an error
- Do not download a replacement DLL from an unrelated website for a missing-DLL message.
- Do not edit the registry because a forum post promises to repair an executable association.
- Do not run a renamed copy from a file-sharing service to bypass a blocked download.
- Do not click Run Basic Repair unless Malwarebytes support specifically directs you to.
- Do not delete detections manually when the log or location is unclear.
