Although the requested title uses “Services,” the FCC defines the term in the singular. Its definition points to three clauses in Part 27, each covering different frequencies.
What does Advanced Wireless Service mean in FCC rules?
Under 47 CFR § 27.4, “Advanced Wireless Service (AWS)” means “A radiocommunication service licensed pursuant to this part for the frequency bands specified in § 27.5(h), 27.5(j), or 27.5(k).” In other words, the legal definition ties AWS to a Part 27 license and to the frequency bands identified by those clauses.

This is a regulatory designation, not a description of a phone’s capabilities, a particular generation of mobile technology, or a general category for sophisticated wireless systems. Technical standards documents also use AWS terminology, but that usage does not replace the FCC’s definition.

The bands are specified in three parts of 47 CFR § 27.5. The ranges below are frequency allocations in the rule; they do not by themselves establish who holds licenses or where service is deployed.

| Rule clause | Frequency arrangement | Common label or note |
|---|---|---|
| § 27.5(h) | Paired 1710–1755 MHz and 2110–2155 MHz; paired 1755–1780 MHz and 2155–2180 MHz; and unpaired blocks at 1695–1710 MHz. | Includes the familiar AWS-1 and AWS-3 groupings. |
| § 27.5(j) | 2000–2020 MHz paired with 2180–2200 MHz, divided into two paired 10 MHz blocks on each side. | AWS-4. |
| § 27.5(k) | Paired 1915–1920 MHz and 1995–2000 MHz. | A separate grouping included by the definition. |
How are AWS-1, AWS-3, and AWS-4 different?
AWS-1
AWS-1 commonly refers to 1710–1755 MHz paired with 2110–2155 MHz. The FCC’s AWS band-plan document illustrates this pairing. That document was last reviewed or updated on April 20, 2006, so treat it as historical context; consult current FCC rules for present legal details.
AWS-3
AWS-3 is associated with spectrum covered by § 27.5(h), including unpaired 1695–1710 MHz blocks and paired 1755–1780 MHz / 2155–2180 MHz spectrum. NTIA reported that the FCC completed the AWS-3 auction on January 29, 2015, for licenses in those three ranges. That auction date is a milestone, not evidence of current license ownership or deployment.

AWS-4
AWS-4 refers to 2000–2020 MHz paired with 2180–2200 MHz under § 27.5(j). In a 2012 proceeding, the FCC described terrestrial mobile broadband service in those bands and noted their co-primary allocation for Mobile Satellite Service and terrestrial Fixed and Mobile service, as well as existing Mobile Satellite Service authorizations. The proceeding is historical; it should not be used to infer current license holdings or operations.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIs AWS a wireless technology such as LTE?
No. The FCC’s AWS definition concerns a licensed service and specified spectrum, not a radio-access technology. The terms can appear together because technical standards may refer to a band as AWS. For example, 3GPP records a Release 13-planned technical report titled “Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) extension band for LTE,” created on April 8, 2015, with later version activity in 2015 and 2016. That standards usage does not change the FCC meaning.

What should readers take away?
- For the United States, AWS has a specific FCC Part 27 meaning: a licensed radiocommunication service tied to designated frequencies.
- The definition points to § 27.5(h), (j), and (k), which cover several distinct paired and unpaired spectrum groupings.
- AWS-1, AWS-3, and AWS-4 are labels associated with different groupings; the relevant rule clauses provide the controlling frequency references.
- AWS may appear in LTE standards terminology, but AWS itself is not a synonym for LTE or for advanced wireless technology generally.
