Its main advantage is control: layers and masks let you make targeted changes and revise a composite without permanently erasing the original content. It is a strong choice when that flexibility, Adobe-specific tools, or an existing Adobe workflow matters; a free or browser-based alternative may suit narrower needs.
What is Adobe Photoshop used for?
Photoshop works with raster images—pictures and artwork built from pixels. It can handle both photographic edits and broader visual projects, so its uses extend beyond correcting color or cropping a picture.

- Photo retouching: Adjust an image or make targeted changes to parts of it.
- Compositing: Combine photos and graphics, such as placing a cut-out subject on a different background.
- Painting: Create or refine artwork with digital brushes.
- Graphic creation: Build layered visual designs from image and painted elements.
What are the benefits of Photoshop?
Layers and masks make revisions easier
Adobe describes image layers as separate document elements that can hold pixel-based content such as photos, artwork, and painted details. A mask controls which parts of a layer are visible. For example, you can place a subject over a new background and refine the visible edges without erasing the source image. Keeping elements separate also makes it easier to revisit one part of a composite rather than redo the whole image. Adobe’s guide to layers and guide to layer masks explain these building blocks.

One application supports several kinds of creative work
Photoshop brings image adjustment, retouching, compositing, painting, and graphic creation into one editor. That breadth is useful when a project moves between those tasks, rather than requiring only a single, narrow photo correction. Adobe’s Photoshop overview describes its broader editing and creation capabilities.

Generative tools can help with additions and cleanup
Adobe’s feature overview, last updated May 20, 2026, lists Generative Fill for adding, removing, or replacing objects; Generative Expand for extending image boundaries; Generate Background; Generative Upscale; Harmonize for adjusting lighting, color, shadows, and details to blend an object into a background; Generate Image; and Generate Similar. Adobe states that these features use generative credits. They can propose or create edits, but results still need inspection and may need further adjustment. The available feature set and underlying models can change. See Adobe’s generative AI feature overview for current details.
Adobe announced additional tools on August 27, 2026, including a non-destructive Light Adjustment Layer and an AI Assisted Editor with Prompt to Edit, Remove Background, Generative Expand, Remove Tool, Generative Fill, Generative Upscale, and AI Markup. Announced features can vary by version, rollout, and plan, so check Adobe’s announcement and current account details before relying on a particular tool.
Access spans desktop, web, and mobile
Adobe describes Photoshop for desktop, web, and mobile. Photoshop on the web is a browser-based application included with Photoshop plans; the mobile app is standalone, with premium features available through a subscription. Exact plan names, inclusions, and availability vary, so consult Adobe’s current regional plans page rather than assuming that a feature is included in every arrangement.

Photoshop is especially worth considering if you need precise layered editing, make composites that require repeated revisions, want its current generative tools, or collaborate in an Adobe-centered workflow. If you mainly need a small set of straightforward edits, or prioritize a different cost, platform, or way of working, another editor may be a better fit.

Before switching, check whether the alternative runs on your operating system or in your browser, how its account and cost terms work, and whether it handles the files you exchange with collaborators. Test a real project—not just a simple image—if it depends on application-specific effects, linked assets, or complex layers.
What is the best alternative to Photoshop?
There is no universal replacement; the right choice depends on the work and the terms that matter to you. These options have different evidence-backed strengths, not proven feature parity with Photoshop:

| Reader priority | Option to investigate | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Free, modifiable image editor | GIMP | GIMP’s official FAQ says it is free to use for any purpose and describes the project’s aim of making a high-end image-manipulation application free to use and modify. That does not establish parity with every Photoshop feature. |
| Broad creative application with free-account access for new users | Affinity by Canva | Canva announced that new users can download Affinity using a free Canva account. Check the Canva announcement and current terms for present features and account conditions. |
| Browser-based editing option | Photopea | A 2026 editorial alternatives guide includes Photopea, but the cited material does not establish its current vendor terms or detailed capabilities. Verify those directly with the vendor before choosing it. |
The 2026 editorial guide also describes Affinity as free since October 2025 and lists GIMP and Photopea as alternatives. Product terms can change; use the guide as a starting point, then confirm current details from each vendor.
Can you use Photoshop without a subscription?
Adobe’s product information describes Photoshop on the web as included in Photoshop plans and the mobile app as standalone, with premium mobile features available through a subscription. The available material does not establish a subscription-free route to the full Photoshop application. Since plan names, prices, regional terms, and included features can change, check Adobe’s current purchase page for your location before deciding.
Do you need a drawing tablet for Photoshop?
No. Ordinary photo editing can be done without one. A pressure-sensitive drawing tablet is an optional accessory that can make painting or pen-based retouching more expressive: Adobe says supported tablets can use pen pressure, angle, rotation, or a stylus wheel to control brush application. Check operating-system and driver compatibility before buying. Adobe’s drawing tablet guidance covers the relevant controls.
