A shorter setting makes a key trigger earlier; a longer setting requires a more deliberate press. The available distance, adjustment increments, per-key controls and sensing technology depend on the keyboard model.
The feature changes the activation threshold, not automatically the keyboard’s USB polling rate or your reaction time. It is also different from Rapid Trigger: adjustable actuation uses a chosen threshold, while Rapid Trigger changes when a key resets as it begins moving upward.

What the actuation point controls
A key moves through a physical travel distance when you press it. The actuation point is the position at which the keyboard decides that the key is pressed and sends an input to the computer. With a conventional fixed-threshold switch, that point is built into the switch design.

Fixed actuation on a conventional switch
SteelSeries uses a Cherry Red switch as an example with a 2 mm actuation point. Pressing the key past that point registers the input. The key remains registered while held below the threshold and stops registering only after it rises past its reset point. The exact actuation and reset distances vary by switch design.

Changing the threshold
An adjustable-actuation keyboard lets firmware or configuration software move the trigger threshold. Set a shallow point and a small key movement can register; set a deeper point and the key must travel farther. The setting does not physically shorten the keycap’s total travel. It changes where during that travel the electrical or magnetic signal is interpreted as “pressed.”
There is no universal range. SteelSeries describes OmniPoint models with active and reset points from 0.1 mm to 4 mm. Wooting lists 0.1–4.0 mm adjustment on each key for the Two HE, in 0.1 mm increments. Those figures are specifications for those products, not an industry-wide standard.
How an adjustable key registers a press
From top position to actuation
- Rest: the key is above its configured threshold and reports no press.
- Downstroke: the sensor tracks the key’s position as you press.
- Threshold crossing: when the key reaches the selected distance, the controller reports a key-down event.
- Held state: the key remains active while it stays beyond the threshold.
- Return: as the key rises, it must cross the configured reset condition before a key-up event is reported. The reset behavior is model-specific.
On a static adjustable-actuation setting, the chosen point remains fixed until you change it. A 1 mm setting does not progressively become more sensitive while you hold the key; it simply defines the point used for activation (and, where the keyboard exposes it, the corresponding reset point).

What the controller is measuring
Different keyboards measure position in different ways. The cited products include SteelSeries OmniPoint switches, Hall Effect magnetic switches and Razer analog optical models. Razer describes its Hall Effect keyboards as using contactless magnetic sensors. Do not assume that every adjustable keyboard uses magnets, optical emitters or the same switch construction; check the specific model’s documentation.
Adjustable actuation versus Rapid Trigger
The names are often used together because both features can reduce the movement needed for repeated game inputs, but they alter different parts of the key-state decision.
| Feature | What changes | How the key resets | Typical controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adjustable actuation | The distance at which a press registers. | Usually a configured, static reset threshold. | Actuation distance; sometimes a separate active/reset value. |
| Rapid Trigger | The movement needed to release and re-trigger after a press. | Resets dynamically when the key starts moving upward after registration, subject to the selected sensitivity. | Enable/disable per key; sensitivity; often separate upstroke and downstroke values. |
Why Rapid Trigger feels different
With a conventional switch, a pressed key generally has to travel back past a fixed reset point before another press can be detected. Razer says supported products with Rapid Trigger can reset when upward movement begins after registration, with sensitivity down to 0.1 mm. That is a manufacturer specification, not an independent measurement of response time or proof of a particular in-game advantage.

Wooting’s setup guidance shows why the two settings interact: Rapid Trigger behavior depends on both the actuation point and the selected sensitivity. Its supported Hall Effect keyboards can enable Rapid Trigger per key and provide distinct upstroke and downstroke sensitivities. A keyboard can therefore offer adjustable actuation without Rapid Trigger, Rapid Trigger alongside adjustable actuation, or neither feature.
Where the feature helps
Fast, repeated game inputs
A shallow actuation point can reduce the physical distance required for an initial key-down event. Players may choose this for movement keys or other controls that they tap repeatedly. Rapid Trigger can further reduce the upward travel needed before another input is recognized, which is a separate behavior from choosing a shallow initial threshold.
Deliberate commands and typing
A deeper setting requires more travel before activation. That can make accidental brushes less likely and may suit typing, menu navigation or games where an unintended press is more harmful than a slightly earlier trigger. You can mix settings if the keyboard supports per-key control: for example, a shallower value on frequently tapped movement keys and a deeper value on modifiers or keys you rest your fingers on.

Different profiles for different tasks
Adjustable actuation is useful when one keyboard serves several purposes. A gaming profile can use shorter distances, while a typing profile can use deeper thresholds. Whether profiles are stored in software, onboard memory or both is a model-specific feature; verify it before buying.
How to configure adjustable actuation
The labels and available controls differ by manufacturer, but the workflow is generally the same.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm support. Check the exact model’s specification for adjustable actuation, the supported distance range, increments and whether all keys are eligible. Some keyboards restrict advanced features to particular switches or keys.
- Connect the keyboard as required. Configuration may require the manufacturer’s desktop utility, a web configurator or an onboard mode. Razer documents Synapse and onboard adjustment options for its cited line; other brands use different methods.
- Select the keyboard and key. Choose an individual key if per-key adjustment is supported, or select the global profile when the model applies one value to every key.
- Choose an actuation distance. Enter a value within the published range. On a keyboard offering 0.1–4.0 mm in 0.1 mm steps, for example, 1.2 mm is a valid setting but 1.25 mm is not.
- Apply or save. Some utilities apply immediately; others require an Apply, Save to device or profile-sync action. If onboard memory is available, save there when you need the setting to persist on another computer.
- Test before playing. Use a keyboard tester or a text editor to check that a light touch does not trigger keys unintentionally. Test both a quick tap and a slow release.
- Configure Rapid Trigger separately, if present. Enable it per key where supported, then set sensitivity and any independent upstroke/downstroke values. Do not treat the Rapid Trigger sensitivity number as the actuation distance.
What to compare when choosing a keyboard
| Specification | Why it matters | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Actuation range | Determines how shallow or deep the trigger can be. | Is the published range 0.1–4 mm, or something narrower? |
| Adjustment increment | Smaller steps allow finer tuning. | Are values adjustable in 0.1 mm steps or only in larger presets? |
| Per-key control | Lets you combine gaming and typing settings on one profile. | Can every key be adjusted, or only selected keys? |
| Rapid Trigger | Changes reset behavior for repeated inputs. | Is it supported, and can it be enabled per key? |
| Reset sensitivity | Controls how much upward movement is needed for another input. | Are upstroke and downstroke sensitivities separate? |
| Sensing technology | Indicates how position is detected and can affect compatibility. | Does the model use Hall Effect, optical or another sensor design? |
| Configuration method | Determines whether a computer, app or internet connection is needed to change settings. | Are settings available in software, onboard, or both? |
| Persistence and profiles | Controls whether your setup follows the keyboard between computers. | How many profiles can be stored, and where are they saved? |
The Wooting Two HE is one manufacturer-documented example with per-key actuation adjustment and Rapid Trigger. Its 0.1–4.0 mm range and 0.1 mm increments describe that model only. Treat any other keyboard’s advertised range as a separate specification.

Common pitfalls and how to correct them
Accidental activation at very shallow settings
At 0.1 mm, Wooting cautions that movement of the keycap itself can activate a key. Resting a finger, brushing a key or flexing the cap may be enough. Start with a less sensitive value, then lower it gradually while testing the keys you actually use.
Removing default dead zones
Some implementations include default dead zones to filter tiny sensor fluctuations. Wooting warns that removing them can create an unstable experience. If inputs appear to chatter, flicker or trigger without a deliberate press, restore the default filtering before changing other settings.
Confusing actuation with total travel
A 0.5 mm actuation setting does not turn a full-travel key into a 0.5 mm switch. The key still has its physical travel and bottom-out feel; only the registration point has moved.

Ranges, increments, eligible keys and profile behavior vary by model. Firmware updates can also change available controls. Use the manual for the exact keyboard rather than copying a value from another product.
Expecting a guaranteed performance result
A manufacturer’s 0.1 mm sensitivity claim describes a setting, not a measured reduction in game latency. Your switch mechanics, firmware, USB path, software and technique all affect the resulting experience.
Troubleshooting an unwanted result
- Keys trigger while resting: increase the actuation distance and restore any default dead zone.
- Repeated taps do not register: check whether Rapid Trigger is enabled, then reduce its reset sensitivity in small steps rather than immediately changing actuation.
- Settings revert after reconnecting: save the profile to onboard memory if the keyboard supports it, or keep the configuration utility available.
- Some keys lack the option: verify whether the feature is limited to a switch type, a key group or a particular firmware mode.
- Behavior differs between computers: determine whether the setting lives in software or in the keyboard’s memory; software-only profiles may not follow the device.
Bottom line
Adjustable actuation is a configurable trigger threshold: shallower values register sooner, while deeper values demand more travel. Rapid Trigger is a separate dynamic reset system. Compare the published range, increments, per-key support, sensing method, reset controls and storage options for the exact keyboard, then tune from a conservative setting to avoid accidental inputs.
