There is no single, official Windows program called activex.exe. The filename has been used by unrelated third-party software and by malware, so its name alone cannot tell you whether it is safe. Check the exact file path, publisher, digital signature, startup behavior and Microsoft Defender results before deleting or allowing it.
ActiveX itself is a Microsoft component framework for network-delivered controls; it is separate from any one activex.exe file. Current Microsoft 365 and Office 2024 installations disable ActiveX controls by default because they can access local files and change registry settings.

What is activex.exe?
activex.exe is an ambiguous filename, not a universal Windows system component. Different applications can use the same executable name, and malicious software can deliberately choose a familiar-looking name. File.net’s cataloged examples do not treat it as a Windows core file and show that it can appear in multiple locations.
Historical malware has also used the name. ActiveX.exe startup entries were associated with the W32/Rubble-C worm and the Troj/Roamer-A Trojan. An AhnLab report described torrent-delivered malware that created C:Activex.exe and configured startup persistence. Those examples do not prove that every file with this name is malicious, but an unexpected copy deserves investigation.

The practical question is therefore not “Is the name safe?” but “What is this particular file, who signed it, where did it come from, and what does it do when Windows starts?”
ActiveX framework versus activex.exe
ActiveX is a Microsoft COM/OLE-derived framework for controls delivered through documents, applications or web content. An ActiveX control can access the local file system and change registry settings. A control with those capabilities can cause significant damage if it is untrusted or abused.
The framework is not represented by one canonical executable called activex.exe. A legitimate application may install a file with that name, while malware may use the same spelling to camouflage itself. Treat the executable and the framework as separate subjects when investigating an alert or error.

Windows allows ordinary applications to choose their own executable names. A malware author can therefore copy a familiar spelling, add a deceptive product description or place the file in a directory that looks authoritative. Conversely, a legitimate vendor may install a similarly named file outside the Windows directory. A file’s size is also not a reliable identity check: unrelated builds can differ, and there is no published universal size for this filename.
Use several independent signals together. A valid signature from the expected publisher, a known installation event, a matching vendor hash and the absence of security detections are more useful in combination than any one of them. A file that fails one check should not automatically be deleted, but it should not be allowed merely because its name looks familiar.
Is activex.exe safe?
You cannot reach a reliable yes-or-no verdict from the filename, file size or folder name alone. Even a copy in C:Windows or C:WindowsSystem32 is not automatically legitimate, because malware can use convincing names and locations.

No authoritative source provides a universal hash, file size or prevalence rate for activex.exe. Because the name is reused, compare all of these signals instead of relying on one.

How to examine a specific activex.exe safely

Record the complete path
Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. On the Processes or Details tab, findactivex.exe, right-click it and choose Open file location. If the file came from a security alert, use the alert’s file-location option. Copy the complete path before closing the window. Do not assume that a Windows-looking folder proves authenticity. -
Inspect the file properties and signature
Right-click the file, choose Properties, and open the Digital Signatures tab. Select each signature and choose Details to check whether Windows reports that the signature is valid, who signed it and whether the certificate chain is trusted. Microsoft notes that unsigned files, expired certificates or untrusted certificates can cause ActiveX add-on installation to be blocked. If you expected the file, obtain a properly signed build from the vendor rather than bypassing the warning.

Match the publisher to installed software
Review the Details tab for product and company information, then compare it with applications listed in Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Consider when the application was installed and whether the executable appeared at the same time. A publisher you do not recognize, a misspelled product name or an application you never chose is a reason to stop and scan.

Record a hash when a vendor publishes one
There is no universal
activex.exehash. If the expected vendor publishes a SHA-256 value, calculate the local value in PowerShell withGet-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 'C:pathtoactivex.exe'and compare the complete result character by character. Update Defender and run a Full scan
Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection. Under Virus & threat protection updates, select Check for updates. Then choose Scan options, select Full scan and start it. Let the scan finish before deciding what to remove.

Use Microsoft Defender Offline if the problem persists
If the process or detection returns, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, select Microsoft Defender Offline scan and choose Scan now. Windows restarts and scans before the normal desktop loads, which can help when a running process interferes with cleanup. Save open work first.

Check startup persistence after preserving evidence
In Task Manager, open Startup apps and note any entry that launches the file, including its publisher and impact. For a deeper check, inspect the current-user and machine-wide Run and RunOnce entries in Registry Editor. The common locations are

If more than one activex.exe is present
Multiple copies are not automatically proof of infection. They may belong to separate applications, but they can also indicate a copied or persistent payload. Compare the files side by side using the same criteria: exact path, signer and certificate validity, product and company metadata, creation or installation timing, startup command, Defender result and vendor hash. A legitimate copy should map to an application you chose. An unexplained copy that launches at logon, has no trusted signature or appeared after an untrusted download deserves priority for quarantine and further scanning.

How to interpret scan results
A clean scan is reassuring but is not a publisher identity certificate; continue checking the path and signature. A malware or potentially unwanted-program detection is a strong reason to follow Windows Security’s quarantine or removal action. If Defender reports that it could not clean the item, update security intelligence, restart and run a Full scan, then use Defender Offline. A detection that returns after reboot suggests persistence or a second component, so inspect startup entries and uninstall the associated unwanted application rather than repeatedly deleting one copy.
How to fix common activex.exe errors
“activex.exe has stopped working”
First identify the parent application. In Task Manager, right-click the process and choose Open file location; examine the surrounding folder and the application’s publisher. If the file belongs to software you intentionally installed, use that application’s own Repair option in Settings > Apps > Installed apps when available, or uninstall and reinstall the latest package from the vendor’s official source. Apply the application’s updates and restart Windows.
If the file is unsigned, belongs to an unwanted application or is detected by Defender, do not repair it by downloading a replacement executable. Quarantine or remove it through the security product, then uninstall the associated program.

A missing-file message usually means that a parent application still expects a component that was removed, quarantined or corrupted. Do not download an arbitrary activex.exe from a DLL or EXE catalog: the filename is reused and the replacement may be malicious or incompatible. Identify the application named in the error, update it, run its official repair function or reinstall it from the publisher’s source. If Defender removed the file, review Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history before restoring anything.
An unexpected startup entry appears
Take a screenshot or record the entry’s name, command and path. In Task Manager > Startup apps, right-click the entry and choose Disable; disabling prevents automatic launch while preserving evidence. Run a Defender Full scan followed by an Offline scan if the item returns. Then uninstall the associated unwanted program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Recheck Startup apps and the Run/RunOnce locations after restarting. If the entry recreates itself, scan again and investigate the parent application rather than repeatedly deleting the executable.

Defender identifies activex.exe
Follow the action offered by Windows Security, normally Quarantine or Remove, and allow the scan to complete. Do not choose an exclusion for an unexplained file. Restart, update security intelligence and run a Full scan; use Microsoft Defender Offline if the detection returns. After cleanup, change passwords or review sensitive activity if you used the computer while the file was active, particularly when the file arrived through an untrusted download.
Office says ActiveX content is blocked
Blocking is expected in current Microsoft 365 and Office 2024 configurations. Microsoft says, “For optimal security, Microsoft strongly encourages leaving ActiveX controls disabled unless absolutely necessary.” Leave the control blocked when you did not expect it, do not trust the publisher or cannot explain why the document needs it.

If a legitimate business document requires the control, verify the document’s source and publisher first. Enable only the least-permissive Trust Center setting that meets the requirement, and only for the specific trusted content or location. Microsoft’s earlier security guidance was similarly direct: “If an ActiveX control is not essential to your computer activity, avoid installing it.”
Internet Explorer mode reports an unverified add-on publisher
Open the add-on or control’s properties and inspect Digital Signatures. An unverified publisher, expired certificate or unsigned package should not be installed just to clear the warning. Obtain a current, properly signed package from the vendor that supplied the business application. If the application cannot provide one, keep the add-on disabled and ask the software administrator for a supported replacement.

Delete or quarantine the file only after Microsoft Defender or another trusted security product identifies it, or after you confirm that it belongs to an unwanted application. If it is part of software you rely on, deleting it by filename can break that software and create a missing-file error. Use the parent application’s uninstaller or repair process instead.
Before removal, save the path, signature details, publisher, hash and startup command. This record helps you restore a legitimate application or report a suspicious file. After removal, restart Windows and check for a returning startup entry or new copy. A recurring file suggests that another component, scheduled action or unwanted application is recreating it and requires another scan and application-level cleanup.
How to prevent future ActiveX-related problems
- Keep Windows, Microsoft 365 or Office, browsers and installed applications updated.
- Leave ActiveX controls disabled unless a specific, trusted business requirement makes one necessary.
- Install software and document add-ons only from sources you can verify.
- Review a file’s path, signer and publisher before allowing an unexpected executable to run.
- Keep Microsoft Defender security intelligence current and investigate recurring detections with an Offline scan.
- Do not use generic registry cleaners or download replacement EXE files from catalog sites to resolve a missing-file message.
A practical decision checklist
- Unexpected file? Record the full path and startup command before changing anything.
- Valid signature from the expected publisher? If not, treat the file as suspicious and scan it.
- Known application and no Defender detection? Repair or reinstall that application from its official source if it is failing.
- Defender detection, unexplained persistence or repeated recreation? Quarantine or remove it, run Full and Offline scans, and uninstall the associated unwanted software.
- Office or IE mode blocked a control? Keep it disabled unless you have verified the document, publisher and business need.
