acpihpq8001.exe is not a documented Windows system file. The related identifier that can be verified is ACPIHPQ8001, an HP hardware ID associated in HP support guidance with HP Hotkey Support. A filename that resembles that identifier is not proof that the executable is genuine. Do not run it until you have checked its location, publisher, digital signature and hash.

For an HP computer showing an unknown ACPIHPQ8001 device, the safest repair is to identify the exact model, install the matching package from Windows Update or HP Customer Support, and then use Device Manager if the package only extracts its files. The complete procedure is below.

What the name does—and does not—tell you

Windows hardware IDs and executable filenames are different things. ACPIHPQ8001 is an identifier reported by firmware and Device Manager for an ACPI device. It is not the name of a program. The researchable HP support case connects that hardware ID with HP Hotkey Support and identifies SoftPaq sp66562 for the affected system. That association helps you find the right driver; it does not authenticate an arbitrary file called acpihpq8001.exe.

Item What can be established What cannot be assumed
ACPIHPQ8001 An HP ACPI hardware ID associated in HP guidance with HP Hotkey Support. That every HP computer needs the same package or that the ID is an executable.
acpihpq8001.exe The exact filename is not documented by the authoritative material available for this topic. That it is a legitimate Windows component, an HP file, or malware.
HP Hotkey Support A model-specific driver or support package that can provide the device functionality. That a package for one HP model will work on another model.
SoftPaq sp66562 An example package cited in an HP support case; the case used C:SWSetupsp66562 after extraction. That this old package is correct for every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.

If an error mentions the executable but Device Manager does not show the hardware ID, treat the two clues separately. A program may have been renamed to look like a driver, while a missing ACPI device may simply need the correct HP package. Resolve the hardware identity before deciding that a file should be launched or deleted.

Is acpihpq8001.exe safe?

No authoritative source in the available material certifies that exact executable as safe. Safety depends on provenance and the file itself, not on a familiar-looking name. A legitimate driver package should come from Windows Update, HP Customer Support’s Software and Driver Downloads, Device Manager, or the component manufacturer’s official site. An executable copied from an unofficial driver or DLL site, an email attachment, or a random download should be considered untrusted.

Check the complete path

In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, and note the path on the General tab. A file in an HP package directory such as C:SWSetup... may be part of an installation, but the location alone is not proof. Be especially cautious with files in a user’s Downloads, AppData, Temp, Recycle Bin, or another user-writable directory when you did not deliberately download the package.

Check the publisher and signature

Open Properties > Digital Signatures. Confirm that a signature is present, that Windows reports it as valid, and that the signer is the expected hardware or software provider. A missing, invalid, or unrelated signature is a reason not to run the file. Microsoft’s driver-signing guidance explains that signing associates a digital signature with a driver package and verifies package integrity and provider identity. On 64-bit Windows, kernel-mode drivers must meet Microsoft’s signing requirements; a look-alike executable does not gain trust merely by having an HP-sounding name.

Record a hash before asking for help

For a file you need to investigate, open PowerShell and run:

Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 "C:pathtoacpihpq8001.exe"

Replace the path with the actual location. Save the resulting SHA-256 value and the file’s Properties details. A hash is an identity value for that exact file; it is useful when HP support or a security professional asks for evidence, but a hash by itself does not prove that a file is safe.

Do not execute an unverified copy

If the file came from an unofficial source, lacks a valid signature, or appeared without an installation you recognize, do not double-click it or approve an elevation prompt. Disconnecting the computer from the network can limit unwanted communication while you investigate. Use the built-in Windows Security scan or your organization’s approved security process to examine the file. Do not delete a driver blindly if you still need the device; first record its path and hardware details so you can restore the correct package.

Why Windows reports an acpihpq8001.exe or ACPIHPQ8001 error

The HP hotkey component is missing

After a clean Windows installation, a major update, or a drive replacement, Windows may have no matching driver for the ACPI device. Device Manager then lists an unknown device, often with a yellow warning icon. Hotkeys for brightness, volume, wireless radios, or other functions may stop working because the supporting component is absent.

The package does not match the computer

HP packages are selected by model, operating system and architecture. A package for a similar-looking notebook can install partially, leave the device unresolved, or introduce a new warning. Enter the full product name or product number from the computer’s label, firmware screen or HP Support Assistant rather than choosing a package by appearance alone.

The installer extracted files but did not install the driver

Some SoftPaq installers unpack files into an HP-created directory and then exit, fail silently, or are intended to be completed through Device Manager. The HP support case specifically describes browsing to the extracted folder and enabling subfolder inclusion.

Windows Update replaced or rejected a driver

A feature update can remove an older support component, while an optional driver update can replace a working version. The result may be an unknown device or a warning after reboot. Windows Update is still the first supported check, but the exact HP model page may contain a package that Windows Update does not offer.

Memory Integrity blocks an old driver

Windows Security’s Memory Integrity feature can prevent an incompatible driver from loading. Microsoft recommends looking for an updated compatible driver before changing this protection. Disabling Memory Integrity lowers a security boundary and should be treated only as a temporary, deliberate fallback—not as the normal repair.

A renamed file is unrelated to the hardware

Because the exact executable name is undocumented, malware or an unwanted utility could use it to resemble the hardware ID. A file that launches at sign-in, consumes resources, displays an unexpected prompt, or resides outside an HP installation folder deserves independent safety checks rather than a driver reinstall.

Manual repair: identify the device and install the correct HP support

Follow these steps in order. They preserve the evidence needed to recover if a package is wrong and avoid running an unverified executable.

  1. Record the Windows version and HP model. Press Windows key + R, enter winver, and record the edition and build. In Settings > System > About, record the processor architecture and the computer’s exact model or product number. On older interfaces, open Control Panel > System. Do not substitute a family name for the full model identifier.
  2. Inspect Device Manager. Right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand Other devices or the category containing the yellow warning icon. Right-click the unknown entry, choose Properties, open the Details tab, and select Hardware Ids from the Property list. Look for ACPIHPQ8001. Copy the complete value, including any revision suffix, into a text file.
  3. Run Windows Update. In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update; in Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Select Check for updates, install applicable updates, and restart when asked. Open Advanced options > Optional updates and review driver updates if that section is offered. Do not install an update merely because its description looks similar; confirm that it is for the HP computer.
  4. Use HP’s model-specific driver page. Go to HP Customer Support’s official Software and Driver Downloads area, enter the exact model or product number, select the installed Windows version, and look for HP Hotkey Support or the equivalent hotkey/ACPI support package. Read the package’s supported models and operating systems before downloading. HP’s guidance also allows Device Manager or the component manufacturer’s official site, but a generic third-party driver site is not an equivalent source.
  5. Download and inspect the package. Save the installer, note its filename and download location, and open its Properties before running it. Check the publisher and digital signature. If the package is an HP SoftPaq, its installer normally identifies the package and destination. The historical support case for this hardware ID used SoftPaq sp66562; use that only when HP’s page for your exact model confirms it, not as a universal download.
  6. Run the installer once. Right-click the verified package and choose Run as administrator if your account permits it. Follow the on-screen prompts and restart if requested. If setup reports that the driver is already installed, or if it extracts files and then closes without resolving the device, continue to the next step instead of repeatedly launching the executable.
  7. Point Device Manager to the extracted folder. Return to the unknown device’s Properties > Driver tab and select Update Driver. Choose Browse my computer for drivers, select the directory created by the HP installer, and enable Include subfolders. In the cited HP case, the folder was C:SWSetupsp66562. Your model may use a different SoftPaq directory. Select Next and allow Windows to install only if it identifies a matching driver.
  8. Restart and verify. Reboot Windows, open Device Manager again, and confirm that the unknown entry has disappeared or moved to the expected category without a warning icon. Open the device’s Properties > General tab and check the status message. Test the hotkeys or other function associated with the device, but do not infer that every hotkey problem is caused by this one ID.
  9. Check Memory Integrity if the driver will not load. Open Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation details and inspect Memory integrity. If Windows names an incompatible driver, search HP’s model page for a newer compatible package first. Keep Memory Integrity enabled whenever a supported driver is available. Changing the setting requires a restart and reduces protection, so document the change and restore it after an approved compatible driver is installed.
  10. Use a restore or rollback path when necessary. If the warning began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties > Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver when Windows offers it. If rollback is unavailable, uninstall the device from Device Manager only after you have the correct HP package ready, then use Action > Scan for hardware changes or restart to let Windows rediscover it. Avoid deleting driver-store files manually.

How to handle the executable itself

When it is part of a known HP installation

If the file is inside the folder created by a driver package you intentionally downloaded from HP, has a valid signature, and the package matches your model, let the installer manage it. Do not copy the executable to another computer or rename it. Keep the original package details and hash if you need to report a failed installation.

When it appeared unexpectedly

Do not assume that uninstalling the ACPI device will remove the executable, and do not assume that deleting the executable will repair the device. Record the path, signer, creation date and hash; run a security scan; and review Settings > Apps > Installed apps and Task Manager > Startup apps for a program you do not recognize. If a process is running from a temporary or user-writable directory and has no valid signature, stop investigating it as a driver until its provenance is established.

When Windows displays “driver cannot load”

Capture the exact error text and the driver name shown under Core isolation. A blocked legacy driver and a missing driver require different remedies. Installing a newer HP package preserves Windows security protections; forcing an old driver by weakening Memory Integrity should not be the first choice.

Repair choices compared

Approach Best use Advantages Risks or limits
Windows Update Routine restoration after reinstall or update Uses Microsoft’s delivery and compatibility checks; simple to repeat. May not offer the model-specific hotkey package or the newest HP release.
HP model support page Unknown ACPI device tied to a specific HP computer Matches the product number and lists supported Windows versions. Choosing the wrong model or operating system can leave the device unresolved.
Device Manager with extracted files The installer unpacked but did not complete Lets Windows search the exact folder and its subfolders. Requires the correct extracted package; pointing to an unrelated folder can install the wrong driver.
Third-party driver download Not recommended for this repair May appear convenient when an official package is hard to find. Source authenticity, model match and signature may be unclear.
Disabling Memory Integrity Only a temporary fallback when no compatible package exists and the risk is accepted May allow an older driver to load. Weakens a Windows security feature and does not prove the driver is trustworthy.

Common symptoms and the right next step

Symptom Likely interpretation Next action
Yellow icon on an unknown ACPI device Windows lacks a matching device driver. Confirm the hardware ID, run Windows Update, then use the exact HP model page.
Installer creates a folder but the warning remains The package extracted without completing installation. Use Device Manager’s Browse my computer option and include subfolders.
Hotkeys stopped after reinstall HP Hotkey Support or a related component may be missing. Install the model-specific hotkey package and restart.
“Windows cannot load the driver” with a Core isolation notice Memory Integrity may be blocking an incompatible driver. Find an updated compatible HP package before changing security settings.
A standalone executable appears in Downloads or Temp Its filename is not enough to identify it as a driver. Do not run it; verify the path, signature and hash and scan it.
The device returns after every reboot The installed package may not match the model or Windows build. Remove the mismatched package through normal Windows controls and obtain the package listed for the exact product.

When to stop troubleshooting yourself

  • The HP product number is unreadable or several models share the same family name.
  • The machine cannot boot normally after a driver change.
  • Device Manager shows repeated driver-installation failures, storage errors, or other unrelated hardware warnings.
  • The executable has no valid signature, runs from an unexpected location, or was obtained from an unofficial source.
  • Resolving the issue would require leaving Memory Integrity disabled on a computer that handles sensitive work.

An authorized HP support technician can identify the model from its service information and supply the package intended for that configuration. Keep the hardware ID, Windows build, exact error text, package name, file path and signature result available; those details are more useful than the filename alone.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, and provide backup, restore and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and includes a 2-day free trial with no credit card before subscription; results vary, and no utility repairs every driver problem.

Final verification checklist

  • The computer’s exact HP model and Windows version are recorded.
  • Device Manager confirms whether ACPIHPQ8001 is present.
  • The package came from Windows Update or the exact HP model support page.
  • The installer or executable has a valid signature from the expected provider.
  • If extraction was incomplete, Device Manager searched the extracted folder with subfolders included.
  • The computer was restarted and the device status is normal.
  • Memory Integrity remains enabled unless a temporary, documented exception was unavoidable.
