What Is accicons.exe? Is It Safe, and How to Fix accicons.exe Errors on Windows

accicons.exe is normally a Microsoft Access component installed with Microsoft Office. A genuine copy is usually inside an Office installation directory, carries a valid Microsoft Corporation digital signature, and belongs to a computer that has Access or an Office edition containing it. The filename alone is not proof of safety: malicious programs can use the same name. Verify the path, signature, hash, and security-scan result before you allow, delete, or restore the file.

What accicons.exe is

Microsoft Online Community Support describes ACCICONS.exe as “just a component that Microsoft Access makes use of.” It is associated with Access and Office installations rather than being a standalone Windows system process. A Microsoft Access 2010 security-update bulletin identified an accicons.exe file as version 14.0.7120.5000, 1,450,152 bytes, dated 05-Mar-2014. That bulletin describes one historical Office build; it is not a requirement that every current installation have exactly that version, size, or date.

Office 2016-era installations commonly place the executable at C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficerootOffice16ACCICONS.EXE. Other legitimate Office deployment trees can use different folder names, so the parent directory and installed Office edition matter more than a path copied from another computer. An Office16 sample described by STRONTIC is signed by Microsoft Corporation, which is the kind of publisher information you should expect from an authentic file.

The name can be copied by malware. ThreatInfo has recorded samples named accicons.exe as “General Threat” and “Virus.Neshta.” Those reports refer to particular files identified by their hashes; they do not establish that every file with this name is malicious. Treat the executable as conditionally safe until you complete the checks below.

How to decide whether your copy is safe

Use several independent checks. A filename match is weak evidence, while a trusted installation path, a valid signature, and a clean, up-to-date security scan together provide much stronger provenance.

Check Reassuring result Warning sign
Parent directory The file is inside the Microsoft Office or Access installation selected on your PC, such as the Office16 path shown above. It is in Downloads, a temporary folder, a user-profile folder, a startup folder, or an unrelated directory.
Digital signature Properties shows Microsoft Corporation and Windows reports that the signature is valid. No signature, an invalid signature, or a signer unrelated to Microsoft Office.
Hash and detection Your current security software does not detect the file, and its hash does not match a known threat. Defender or another reputable scanner detects it, or its hash matches a reported malicious sample.
Installed software Microsoft Access, Microsoft 365, Office, or an Office deployment that includes Access is installed. No Office or Access installation exists and nothing you installed explains the file.
Behavior The file appears only when Office uses it and has no unexplained startup or persistence entry. It launches from an odd location, recreates itself, or is associated with other suspicious activity.

Two checks answer different questions. A digital signature helps establish who published a file and whether it was altered after signing. An antivirus scan classifies the file against current threat intelligence. Neither test should be replaced by matching the filename alone.

The Program Files (x86) portion reflects a 32-bit Office installation on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit Office deployment or a different Office version may use another Microsoft Office folder. Office Click-to-Run and volume-license deployments also maintain their own installer trees. Therefore, a different path is not automatically malicious, but it must still belong to a recognizable Office installation and pass the signature and scan checks.

Locations that need extra scrutiny

  • A download, email attachment, archive, or removable-drive folder.
  • %TEMP%, a random folder under your user profile, or an obscure system directory unrelated to Office.
  • A startup location, scheduled-task target, or Run key that you did not create.
  • A folder on a network or cloud-synchronization location when Office is not installed there.

Do not decide that a file is safe or unsafe solely because it is outside the example path. Record the complete path and then verify its publisher, hash, and scan result.

Safe diagnostic workflow

Follow these steps in order. If your antivirus has already flagged the file, do not open it or add an exclusion while investigating.

  1. Open the file location. In Task Manager, right-click the relevant process and choose Open file location, or use the location shown in the security alert. If the alert names a file that is no longer present, record the alert details anyway. Copy the complete path, filename, file size, product version, and modified date.
  2. Inspect the signature in Windows. Right-click the file, select Properties, and open Digital Signatures. Select the signature, choose Details, and confirm that the signer is Microsoft Corporation and that Windows says the signature is valid. If there is no Digital Signatures tab, or validation fails, treat that as a warning rather than proof of malware.
  3. Verify from the command line when appropriate. Microsoft documents default-policy verification with SignTool. From an elevated Command Prompt on a system that has SignTool installed, run:
    signtool verify /pa "C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficerootOffice16ACCICONS.EXE"
Replace the path with the exact location you recorded. If SignTool is unavailable, the Properties dialog remains a useful check; do not download an unknown copy of the utility just to perform this test.
  4. Record a hash. In PowerShell, you can calculate a modern comparison hash with:
    Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 "C:pathtoaccicons.exe"
Threat reports may use MD5 instead. To calculate MD5 for a like-for-like comparison, use:
    certutil -hashfile "C:pathtoaccicons.exe" MD5
Do not compare a SHA-256 value with an MD5 value; the algorithms produce different strings.
  5. Update Microsoft Defender security intelligence. Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection updates → Check for updates. A scan performed with stale definitions can miss a newly classified sample.
  6. Run a full scan. In Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options, choose Full scan. Microsoft says a full scan checks everywhere when malware is suspected, so allow it to finish even if a quick scan was clean.
  7. Use Microsoft Defender Offline if the problem persists. If unwanted software remains, or the file returns after removal, choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same Scan options page. Windows will restart and scan before the normal desktop loads, which can prevent a running threat from hiding or reinstalling itself. Save work before starting.
  8. Follow the detection result. If Defender identifies the file, choose Quarantine or Remove. Microsoft explains that quarantine moves a file to a safer location and blocks it from running. Do not restore or allow the item unless you have independently confirmed the publisher, parent Office installation, and hash.
  9. Recheck the installation only after the security decision. If the file is clean but missing, damaged, or repeatedly reported by Office, proceed to the Office repair steps below. Do not reinstall Office first when a malicious file is still a possibility; reinstalling can overwrite evidence or leave another persistence mechanism untouched.

Can you delete accicons.exe?

Do not manually delete a copy from a working Office folder simply because the name looks unfamiliar. Access or another Office component may need it, and deleting one file can turn a recoverable installation problem into a repair or reinstall problem.

  • If security software detects it: let Defender quarantine or remove it. Do not restore it merely because Office later reports that it is missing.
  • If the file is signed, in the expected Office directory, and scans clean: leave it in place. If Office is malfunctioning, repair the installation instead of deleting a component.
  • If it is an unsigned orphan in an unrelated directory: preserve the path and hash, complete a full and, if needed, Offline scan, and check startup entries or the program that created it. Remove it only after you are certain it is not required by a legitimate application and you have a backup or restore point.
  • If you no longer use Office: uninstall the matching Office or Access product through Windows rather than deleting individual executables. Deployment-specific uninstall controls vary.

Why accicons.exe errors happen

An error involving this filename usually means Windows or Office cannot use the copy it expects. The practical causes fall into a few groups:

Likely condition What you may observe Useful confirmation
Missing or damaged Office component Office reports that the executable cannot be found, will not start, or fails after an update. The expected Office directory is present, but the file is absent, has an abnormal size, or fails signature validation.
Malicious replacement Security alerts, repeated recreation after deletion, unexplained startup activity, or an executable in a random folder. Defender detection, a suspicious path, an invalid signature, or a hash matching a reported threat.
Wrong installation or stale shortcut An older Office component points to a path that no longer exists after migration or an edition change. The referenced path differs from the current Office installation shown in Windows.
Incomplete or damaged Office deployment Repair attempts fail, several Office components produce errors, or the issue returns after updates. Office repair identifies corruption or the deployment channel cannot restore the component.

The error text alone does not identify which condition applies. Use the path, signature, hash, scan result, and installed Office edition together.

How to fix accicons.exe errors

1. Handle a security detection first

If Defender or another security product flags the file, quarantine it and complete a full scan. Use Defender Offline when the item returns or unwanted behavior persists. After cleanup, restart Windows and confirm that the detection does not recur. Do not download a replacement executable from a file-sharing site; a replacement must come from the matching Office installation.

2. Confirm that Access or Office is installed

Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps (called Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds) and look for Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office, Access, or your organization’s Office deployment. If no related product is installed, an accicons.exe reference may be an orphaned shortcut or an unwanted file. Finish the security checks before removing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Repair the matching Office installation

For a clean but missing or corrupted component, use the repair control supplied by your Office deployment. On current Windows interfaces, the common path is Settings → Apps → Installed apps → your Microsoft 365 or Office entry → the three-dot menu → Modify. Choose Quick Repair first if it is offered, then test Access. If the problem remains, run Online Repair, which downloads and replaces more of the installation. The exact buttons differ by Office version, Click-to-Run versus MSI deployment, and organizational policy.

Close Office applications before starting. Online Repair can reset Office settings and may require you to sign in again, so save work and make sure you know the account or license used by the installation.

4. Reinstall the correct edition when repair cannot restore the file

If repair fails, uninstall the matching Office or Access product using its normal Windows or organizational deployment process, restart, and install the same edition from a trusted Microsoft-provided source or your organization’s software portal. Mixing installers from different editions or channels can leave broken paths and version conflicts. After reinstalling, apply Office updates, open Access once, and repeat the signature and scan checks on the restored executable.

5. Reassess a restored or allowed file

If you previously restored accicons.exe from quarantine or created an antivirus exclusion, undo that decision until the file is verified. A valid signature and an expected Office path are necessary provenance checks, but keep current security protection enabled and confirm that no detection remains. If the file is repeatedly detected despite a valid-looking path, submit the sample through your security product’s false-positive process rather than disabling protection globally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decision guide

Finding Recommended action
Microsoft-signed, expected Office path, Office installed, scan clean Keep the file. Repair Office only if an application error continues.
Expected path but missing or corrupted file, no detection Run Quick Repair, then Online Repair if necessary; reinstall the matching edition if repair fails.
Unexpected path or no Microsoft signature Do not run or whitelist it. Update Defender, run a full scan, and use Offline scan if it persists.
Confirmed detection or hash match to a threat report Quarantine or remove it, investigate persistence, and repair Office only after the system is clean.
No Office or Access installation and no legitimate parent program Complete the security workflow, then remove the orphan through normal Windows controls once its origin is understood.

As an optional shortcut after these manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, adjust settings that affect CPU, RAM, and disk load, clean temporary and cache files, and provide vulnerability checks and an app-crash log. It complements antivirus protection rather than replacing it; results vary and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, with a free trial by category of at least two days before a paid subscription.
