ABService.exe is usually the AOMEI Backupper Schedule Service. It runs in the background so AOMEI Backupper can perform scheduled backups and related backup tasks. It is not a core Windows file, and the filename alone does not prove that a copy is legitimate. Verify the file path, publisher and digital signature before deciding whether it is safe. If a trusted AOMEI installation reports that the backup service cannot start, reinstall Backupper without a semicolon in its installation path, then start AOMEI Backupper Schedule Service in Windows Services and set it to start automatically.

What ABService.exe does

ABService.exe is generally a background service installed with AOMEI Backupper. AOMEI uses it for scheduled backup operations and other tasks that need to run without the main Backupper window remaining open. The service may therefore appear in Task Manager even when you are not actively creating a backup.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

It is commonly found below an AOMEI Backupper installation directory, often under a path similar to C:Program Files (x86)AOMEIAOMEI Backupper. The exact folder can differ by Backupper edition, Windows architecture and the location selected during installation. ABService.exe is not part of the Windows operating system itself, so a Windows computer can work normally without it when AOMEI Backupper is not installed.

FreeFixer describes the component as “AOMEI Backupper Schedule task service” and identifies AOMEI International Network Limited as the company for an examined sample. That sample had a valid digital signature. Those details describe the inspected file, not every file that happens to use the same name.

Is ABService.exe safe or malware?

A copy associated with an installed AOMEI Backupper product, located in that product’s directory and signed by the expected AOMEI publisher, is normally legitimate. A copy in an unexpected location, with no valid signature, or running when Backupper is not installed deserves further investigation. Malware can use familiar filenames, so the name alone is never a safety verdict.

Check the location first

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Open the Details tab. If you see ABService.exe under another Task Manager view, right-click it and choose Open file location.
  3. Record the complete path before ending the process or deleting anything.

A path inside the AOMEI Backupper installation folder is consistent with a legitimate installation. Copies in a temporary folder, directly under C:Windows, in a random user-profile directory, or in another location unrelated to Backupper should be treated as higher risk until verified. An unusual path is a warning, not proof of malware.

Inspect the signature and metadata

  1. Right-click the file and choose Properties.
  2. On Details, check the product description, company and version information. They should describe AOMEI Backupper or its schedule service.
  3. On Digital Signatures, select the signer and choose Details. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the signer matches the AOMEI publisher shown for your installation.

If the signature is missing, invalid, or belongs to an unrelated company, do not whitelist the file merely because its name is ABService.exe. Keep the full path and property details for a security review.

Compare the surrounding installation

  • Confirm that AOMEI Backupper is installed in Settings > Apps > Installed apps or in Control Panel > Programs and Features.
  • In the same installation directory, look for the other Backupper components, including ABCore.exe and Backupper.exe.
  • Open services.msc and check whether the registered service is named AOMEI Backupper Schedule Service and points to the installation you verified.
  • Review detections from Microsoft Defender or another current antivirus product. A detection or blocked launch is evidence to investigate, but it should be considered together with the path, signer and observed behavior.

Microsoft’s guidance on potentially unwanted or unknown software is important here: unfamiliar software is not automatically malware, and classification depends on reputation and behavior. Do not make a general malware judgment from the filename or from one automated label alone.

Why ABService.exe keeps running

The service is designed to remain available for scheduled operations. It may start with Windows, wait in the background, and activate when a scheduled backup, cloning task or related job is due. Seeing it in Task Manager is therefore expected when AOMEI Backupper is installed and its schedule service is enabled.

Continuous high CPU, memory or disk use is not required for normal idle operation. If the process repeatedly consumes resources, stops responding or reappears after you end it, check the service status, the Backupper installation and security blocks before attempting removal. Ending the process can interrupt a backup and does not unregister the Windows service.

Common causes of ABService.exe errors

The service is stopped or disabled

A failed update, a manual change in Services, or a damaged installation can leave AOMEI Backupper Schedule Service stopped. Backupper then cannot launch scheduled operations and may display “Failed to enable backup service.”

The installation path contains a semicolon

AOMEI’s service guidance says a semicolon (;) in the installation path can prevent the service from starting. This can happen when Backupper is installed in a custom directory whose name includes that character.

ABCore.exe is not running correctly

AOMEI identifies ABCore.exe as another component to check when service-related functions fail. A damaged file, a permission problem or a security product blocking it can prevent the scheduler from working even when ABService.exe is present.

Security software or ransomware protection blocks the files

Microsoft Defender, another antivirus product or Controlled folder access can block a trusted Backupper component from starting or writing backup data. This should only be addressed after you verify the installation and signature. Never create an exclusion for an unexplained copy.

RPC or port conflicts

AOMEI associates error 4183 with Windows RPC startup and a process using TCP port 6045. Error 4182 is associated with the scheduler service itself. These codes require different checks rather than the same reinstall step.

How to fix “Failed to enable backup service”

Work through the following sequence. It starts with identification, then repairs the installation and service registration without deleting files manually.

1. Save the path and stop making changes until it is verified

Use Task Manager’s Open file location command and copy the complete path into a note. Check the file’s Properties, Details and Digital Signatures tabs. If the path or signer is unrelated to AOMEI, skip directly to the security-isolation section below instead of reinstalling over it.

2. Reinstall Backupper to a path without a semicolon

  1. Open the AOMEI Backupper uninstaller from Start > AOMEI Backupper > Uninstall AOMEI Backupper, or use Control Panel > Programs and Features.
  2. Restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it.
  3. Install Backupper again and choose a folder whose full path contains no semicolon character. A simple directory under C:Program Files or C:Program Files (x86) is less likely to introduce this specific problem, but the important requirement is that the path has no ;.
  4. Restart Windows once the installation finishes.

AOMEI’s dated support instruction states: “Please uninstall and reinstall AOMEI Backupper, and then try to backup again.” Reinstalling also refreshes the service registration and replaces damaged program files.

3. Start the schedule service and set it to Automatic

  1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find AOMEI Backupper Schedule Service in the list.
  3. Right-click it and choose Properties.
  4. Set Startup type to Automatic.
  5. Select Start if the service is stopped, then choose Apply and OK.

If Windows displays an error when you press Start, note the exact code and message. Do not repeatedly force-start a service whose executable path points to an unverified file.

4. Check ABCore.exe

Open the verified AOMEI Backupper installation directory and locate ABCore.exe. AOMEI advises running it as administrator when necessary. Right-click the file, choose Run as administrator, and then retry the backup operation. If Windows or your security software blocks it, record the block before changing any protection setting.

5. Review security blocks safely

  1. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history and check whether ABService.exe, ABCore.exe or Backupper.exe was blocked or quarantined.
  2. If Controlled folder access is enabled, review Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Ransomware protection > Manage ransomware protection for a blocked event.
  3. Only when the path, signature and installation are verified, follow your security product’s documented process to allow the trusted AOMEI files. Keep exclusions as narrow as possible.
  4. Run a current Microsoft Defender scan if the file is unexpected, unsigned or detected by security software. Do not restore or whitelist it solely because the filename matches.

Fixing AOMEI error 4182

Error 4182 points first to the scheduler service. Open services.msc, locate AOMEI Backupper Schedule Service, and confirm that it is running with Startup type set to Automatic. If it will not start, verify the installation path has no semicolon, reinstall Backupper, and check whether ABCore.exe or the three Backupper executables are being blocked.

After the service starts, open Backupper and run a small test backup to a destination you control. An external hard drive can be used as a backup destination, but it is storage for the backup image, not a repair for ABService.exe itself. Watch for a new service error before beginning a large scheduled job.

Fixing AOMEI error 4183

AOMEI’s guidance for error 4183 calls for checks beyond the scheduler service.

Confirm RPC-related services

  1. Press Win + R, enter services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Check the Windows services related to Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and confirm they are not disabled. Leave Windows-managed startup settings at their normal values unless an administrator or AOMEI support specifically instructs otherwise.
  3. Restart Windows after correcting a stopped service, then retry the Backupper operation.

Find the process using port 6045

  1. Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt.
  2. Run netstat -ano.
  3. Look for a line showing local port 6045. Note the PID in the final column.
  4. Match that PID in Task Manager’s Details tab to identify the process using the port.

A process occupying the port can conflict with the Backupper service. Do not terminate an unfamiliar process blindly. Identify its publisher and purpose first, and use a normal uninstall or configuration change for software that legitimately owns the port.

When ABService.exe is not responding

If Task Manager labels ABService.exe as “Not responding,” first determine whether a backup is active. Ending it during a backup can leave an incomplete image. Open the verified file location, check the service in services.msc, and restart the service only when no backup task is running.

Next, check whether the installation was recently moved, renamed or restored from a disk image. A service registration that still points to an old path can fail even though a new ABService.exe exists elsewhere. Reinstalling to a clean path without a semicolon rebuilds that registration.

Check Protection history and Controlled folder access for blocked launches. If the file is unsigned or outside the AOMEI directory, isolate it and scan it rather than trying to repair it as though it were a Backupper component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can you delete ABService.exe?

Do not delete ABService.exe directly while AOMEI Backupper or its schedule service is installed. Removing the executable without unregistering the service can leave a broken service entry, generate startup errors and prevent a clean reinstall.

If you no longer want Backupper

  1. Use Start > AOMEI Backupper > Uninstall AOMEI Backupper.
  2. If that shortcut is unavailable, open Control Panel > Programs and Features, select AOMEI Backupper and choose Uninstall.
  3. Restart when prompted.
  4. If folders or service entries remain, follow AOMEI’s cleanup procedure rather than deleting random files. Restart again when the cleanup instructions request it.

If the file looks suspicious

For a copy outside an expected AOMEI directory, an invalid or unrelated signature, or a detection that does not match your installation, disconnect it from normal use by isolating or quarantining it with updated Microsoft Defender. Preserve the path and scan result. Microsoft provides a submission process for files that require further analysis. Do not add an exclusion before the file has been verified.

Legitimate versus suspicious copies

Check More consistent with a legitimate Backupper component Needs investigation
Full path Inside the installed AOMEI Backupper directory Temporary, Windows, download or unrelated user-profile directory
Digital signature Valid signature from the expected AOMEI publisher Missing, invalid or signed by an unrelated company
Product metadata Description identifies AOMEI Backupper Schedule Service Blank, inconsistent or describes unrelated software
Installed product AOMEI Backupper is installed and the service registration points to it No Backupper installation, or the service points to a different folder
Security reports No unexplained detections or blocks Repeated detections, quarantine events or blocked launches
Behavior Runs as the scheduled-backup service and uses resources mainly during backup jobs Unexpected persistence, unrelated network activity or unexplained resource use

Use all six checks together. No single path, signature result or antivirus label establishes the identity of every ABService.exe file.

After the repair: verify the result

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Open services.msc and confirm that AOMEI Backupper Schedule Service is running and still set to Automatic.
  3. Open Task Manager, use Open file location on ABService.exe, and confirm that it still points to the verified installation directory.
  4. Run a small manual backup before enabling a large scheduled job. Confirm that the destination has enough space and that the resulting image can be seen by Backupper.
  5. Create or trigger a test schedule and verify that it starts at the expected time.

If the service fails again, record the Windows error, AOMEI error code, full executable path, signer and any Protection history event. Those details distinguish a service-registration problem from a blocked or suspicious file and make further support more effective.
