A wireless TV adapter is a small receiver that connects to a television’s HDMI port and lets a compatible phone, tablet, or computer send content to the screen without a cable between the source device and TV. The term can mean different things: some adapters mirror the whole screen, while other devices cast supported apps or media. Whether one works depends on the wireless method supported by both the source device and the receiver.
What a wireless TV adapter does
A typical wireless display adapter plugs into the TV’s HDMI port and receives content sent over a wireless connection. Many adapters also need USB power; Microsoft’s setup instructions, for example, call for connecting both HDMI and USB (Microsoft’s Wireless Display Adapter instructions).

People may also call these products wireless display adapters, screen-mirroring dongles, or Miracast adapters. But “wireless TV adapter” is a broad label, not a guarantee that a device can stream every app or connect to every phone. Check the exact method the adapter uses and whether your devices support it.
Mirroring, casting, and wireless HDMI are not the same
| Method | What appears on the TV | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Miracast adapter | A compatible device’s screen, mirrored or extended to an HDMI display. | Both source and receiver need Miracast support. Microsoft’s adapter connects to the display through HDMI and USB. |
| Google Cast | Supported content sent from a compatible app or device to a compatible TV or receiver. | Sony says the phone and TV must be on the same wireless network; model support varies. |
| Apple AirPlay | Supported content streamed from an Apple device to a supported TV or receiver. | Sony says devices need the same wireless network and that AirPlay is available on select models. |
| Wi-Fi Direct screen mirroring | A compatible source device’s screen sent directly to a compatible TV or projector. | Sony describes this peer-to-peer connection as usable without a home wireless network or internet connection; the display still needs to support it. |
| MHL-to-HDMI | A phone’s output carried to the TV through a cable. | This is wired, not wireless, and works only with compatible phone and TV models. |
Sony explains the distinctions between screen mirroring, Google Cast, AirPlay, and Wi-Fi Direct in its guide to displaying phone and tablet content on a TV. A conventional wireless HDMI transmitter-and-receiver pair is another kind of product; do not assume it works like a Miracast dongle or an app-casting receiver.

Will one work with your phone and TV?
Start with the source device, not just the television. An HDMI port means the TV can accept an HDMI signal; it does not mean a phone supports Miracast, Google Cast, or AirPlay. The adapter and source must share a compatible method, and the TV itself may also have model-specific limits. Microsoft directs Windows users to confirm Miracast support, while Sony notes that screen mirroring is not available on every TV (Microsoft’s wireless-display troubleshooting guide; Sony’s connection guide).
- Want the whole screen? Look for a mirroring method both devices support, such as Miracast or Wi-Fi Direct.
- Want to play content from a supported app? Check whether the app and receiver support Google Cast or AirPlay, and whether the required network conditions are met.
- Need a direct connection without a home network? Wi-Fi Direct may be an option when both devices support it. That does not mean every casting method works offline.
- Considering a cable instead? MHL-to-HDMI is a wired, model-dependent option. LG cautions that MHL compatibility depends on the specific phone and TV (LG’s phone-to-TV connection guidance).
What to check before buying
- Identify the protocol. Confirm whether the receiver uses Miracast, Google Cast, AirPlay, or another method. Do not assume protocols are interchangeable.
- Verify support on your source device. Check the phone, tablet, or computer’s specifications or manufacturer support page for the exact method.
- Decide between mirroring and app casting. A Miracast display adapter is intended for screen mirroring or extending; app-casting devices may send only supported content rather than the entire screen.
- Check network needs. Google Cast and AirPlay setups described by Sony use the same wireless network; Wi-Fi Direct can connect peer-to-peer without a home network or internet when supported.
- Confirm physical setup and product-specific requirements. Check that the TV has an available HDMI input and that you can provide any required USB power. Review the adapter’s current documentation for resolution, protected-content support, and firmware requirements; these are not uniform across the category.
Basic setup and troubleshooting
For Microsoft’s Wireless Display Adapter, Microsoft’s documented setup is specific to that product: connect its HDMI plug to the display, connect USB power, select that HDMI input, then on a Windows PC press Windows key + K and select the adapter (Microsoft setup instructions). Other devices may use a Cast, screen-mirroring, or wireless-display control in their own settings.

- Make sure the source and receiver support the same wireless method.
- Confirm the TV is set to the HDMI input used by the adapter and that the adapter is powered.
- Enable Wi-Fi where the chosen method requires it; for Google Cast or AirPlay, check that both devices are on the same wireless network.
- Check for driver or firmware updates and restart or remove and reconnect the receiver, as Microsoft recommends for Windows wireless-display problems (Microsoft troubleshooting).
Microsoft’s store listing describes its own Wireless Display Adapter as Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Miracast and claims a connection range of up to 23 feet. That is a manufacturer claim for that particular product, not a general range for wireless TV adapters (Microsoft Store product page).
