A VTuber is a creator who appears in live or recorded content through a virtual avatar instead of showing their physical face. Tracking software can translate facial expressions, voice or body movement into changes in that avatar in real time. The term describes this avatar-based presentation, not one mandatory art style, application or streaming platform.
What a VTuber is—and what the term does not require
“VTuber” is short for virtual YouTuber, although VTubers now publish on many live-streaming and video platforms. A person performs, talks, plays games, teaches or makes other content while viewers see a digital character. The character may be a richly rigged illustration, a full 3D model or a small set of images that change with the performer’s voice.

The performer still supplies the creative work: writing, speaking, reacting, moderating chat and controlling the broadcast. The avatar is a presentation layer. Some creators use it to separate their public persona from their offline appearance; others choose it for animation, storytelling or a distinctive visual identity.

There is no single “VTuber look.” A face-tracked 2D character, a motion-captured 3D body and a PNG character with two talking poses all fit the term. The software, model files, sensors and amount of movement determine what viewers see.

Avatar formats compared
Choose a format by the movement you need, the amount of asset preparation you can manage and the content you plan to make. The categories below are useful starting points, but actual capabilities depend on the model, application and settings.
| Format | How it is built | Movement and tracking | Good fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Live2D | Layered 2D artwork whose eyes, mouth, hair, clothing and other parts are rigged to deform independently. | Usually face tracking drives expressions and head movement. It remains a 2D model and does not become a fully rotatable 3D character. | Close-up streams, chat, reaction-heavy content and a polished illustrated persona. | Preparing and rigging layered art takes specialist work; supported movement is limited by the rig. |
| 3D | A three-dimensional character model that can turn, pose and move through a virtual space. | Can use face, hand, body or other tracking. The equipment and software depend on the movement required. | Dancing, full-body performances, VR-style scenes and content that benefits from physical motion. | More expressive movement usually means more setup, calibration and hardware. |
| PNGTuber | A collection of prepared static or animated images, commonly including idle, talking and blinking states. | Software switches images in response to voice input or manual triggers rather than continuously deforming a rig. | A lightweight entry setup, commentary and streams where simple reactions are sufficient. | Movement is limited to the images and states you prepared. |
Live2D’s VTube Studio workflow illustrates the format boundary: its manual describes face tracking for Live2D Cubism models and says the application does not support 3D models. A 3D workflow therefore needs different model support and, when full-body motion is wanted, different tracking tools.
How live tracking turns a person into an avatar
Tracking is a chain rather than a single feature. A device supplies observations, software estimates movement, an avatar application applies those values to a compatible model, and a broadcasting program places the rendered character in the scene.

- Recording Microphone Kit-The dynamic microphone is more convenient for working from home or going out for podcasts, and the complete accessories allow for faster recording work due to its simple straightforward assembly. External windscreen of the XLR dynamic microphone filter out plosive voice.
- Capture input. A webcam or compatible phone observes a face. A 3D setup may add body, hand or other trackers. A PNGTuber can use a microphone and voice detection instead of visual face tracking.
- Estimate movement. Tracking software analyzes the input and produces parameters such as head angle, eye opening, mouth shape or other supported values. It does not automatically understand every model; the application must know which parameters the model accepts.
- Map parameters to the avatar. The avatar application connects each value to a rig, expression or animation. A smile might open a model’s mouth, while a head turn rotates the illustrated face or 3D head.
- Render the result. The application draws the updated character, often against a transparent background or a virtual scene, so it can be layered with gameplay and graphics.
- Compose and broadcast. Streaming or recording software combines the avatar with a microphone, game capture, alerts and other sources, then records or sends the finished scene to a platform.
Phone tracking in VTube Studio
VTube Studio documents two face-tracking routes: webcam tracking using OpenSeeFace, or a connected iPhone or Android phone acting as the tracker. With phone tracking, the app can send calculated face-tracking data over the local network to a computer running the desktop application. Device support and prerequisites are specific to that application and can change, so check its current manual before buying equipment.
Its FAQ describes the phone workflow this way: “Only the calculated parameters are transmitted, so at no point will any video be available on your PC.” That is an app-specific explanation of its phone-tracking data flow, not a guarantee that every VTubing application handles camera data identically.
3D inverse kinematics is a different workflow
In a 3D environment such as VRChat, inverse kinematics (IK) helps software calculate a character’s pose from available tracking points. The VRChat documentation for IK 2.0 discusses support for more tracking points and calibration settings. This is not the same pipeline as VTube Studio’s Live2D face animation: the model format, calibration and supported hardware are different.

What you need for each kind of setup
A practical starter configuration normally has a computer, an avatar file, software that supports that file, an input device when tracking is used, and streaming or recording software. These are examples rather than a universal minimum specification.
Recommended Free Tools
| Setup | Avatar and application | Input | Broadcast essentials | Optional additions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Face-tracked Live2D | Layered, rigged Live2D model and a compatible application such as VTube Studio. | Webcam or compatible smartphone; phone-to-PC networking may be used. | Computer, microphone, and streaming or recording software such as OBS Studio. | Control hardware for expressions, scenes or hotkeys. |
| 3D performance | Supported 3D model, avatar application or virtual environment. | Face tracking for expressions; additional body, hand or other trackers for wider movement. | Computer, microphone and streaming or recording software. | More tracking points, calibration tools, virtual stages and scene controls. |
| PNGTuber | Prepared idle, talking and blinking images plus software that can switch them. | Microphone for voice-triggered changes, or manual controls. | Computer and streaming or recording software. | Additional expressions, animated states and shortcut controls. |
A webcam or phone is therefore common, not mandatory in every format. A Stream Deck-style controller or pedal can trigger expressions and actions through integrations, but it is an convenience, not a requirement for being a VTuber.
How to start VTubing: a format-first workflow
- Define the movement you actually need. For a talking-head channel, Live2D face tracking may provide enough expression. Choose 3D if turning, dancing or full-body staging is central. Choose PNGTuber assets if switching among a few prepared poses meets your needs.
- Obtain a model with clear usage rights. You can commission artwork, create it yourself or use a licensed asset. Confirm whether commercial streaming, edits, redistribution and appearances for organizations are allowed. Rights for the art, rig and textures may be separate.
- Install software that matches the model. A Live2D model needs a Live2D-compatible application; a 3D model needs software that supports its file format and tracking method; a PNG setup needs image-switching software. Loading an incompatible model will not be fixed by adding more hardware.
- Connect the tracking input. Position a webcam where it can see your face, or install the mobile companion and connect the phone as documented by the application. For 3D body tracking, add only the sensors required for the motions you intend to show.
- Calibrate and map expressions. Follow the application’s neutral-pose and calibration process. Check that blinking, mouth movement and head turns reach the intended model parameters without triggering expressions accidentally.
- Build the broadcast scene. Add the avatar output to OBS Studio or another recorder, then layer gameplay, a background, alerts and chat elements. Keep the avatar source separate from game capture so you can reposition or hide it quickly.
- Set up audio. Select the microphone, monitor its level and test it with the avatar movement. A PNGTuber’s voice-triggered state changes depend particularly on a clean, consistently detected microphone signal.
- Run a private test. Record several minutes while looking away, speaking softly, laughing and moving as you will on stream. Watch for dropped tracking, unwanted expressions, audio clipping, exposed desktop windows and scene sources that should remain private.
- Stream conservatively at first. Start with the model, microphone and one main content source. Add complex scenes, hotkeys or extra trackers only after the basic chain is reliable.
What each format feels like in practice
Live2D: expressive close-up presentation
Live2D separates artwork into layers and uses a rig to deform those layers. The result can communicate eye direction, blinking, mouth shapes, hair movement and subtle head turns while retaining an illustrated appearance. It is well suited to chat and reaction content because the face occupies much of the frame. The quality of the result depends on the original layers and rig: a tracker cannot create a mouth shape or costume piece that the model does not contain.

- [Original Sound Reproduction] Working with upgraded condenser USB cardioid microphone capsule, A6T can achieve energetic and warm vocal, which makes it sound like you and your teammates are playing in the same room. Cardioid polar pattern streaming microphone is sensitive to pick up and owns high recognize to the front voice which reduce the noise from the back of gaming microphone. The PC microphone gaming is very suitable for tactical games to effectively improve communication with teammates.
- [Effective Accessories] With wide extensibility, the PC mic with boom arm is great for gamers who have various items on desk. You can pull the podcast microphone near by your mouth when in use, or fold it away to save more space, which give nearly 180° up and down rotation for suitable position. Shock mount on the gaming microphone loosen, further reducing machine noises and vibrations caused by gaming. External detachable pop filter reduce popping noise but not block the computer game screen.
3D: broader movement and staging
A 3D model can rotate in depth and be placed in a virtual environment. Face tracking may be enough for a seated stream, while dancing or room-scale performance calls for additional body tracking. Every extra tracking point adds calibration and another possible failure point, so match the system to the movements viewers will actually see.
PNGTuber: prepared states instead of continuous deformation
PNGTubing can work with a small set of images: an idle pose, a talking pose, a blink and perhaps a few reactions. Voice input or a manual shortcut changes the visible state. This avoids commissioning a rigged 2D or 3D model, but the character cannot naturally express movements that were never drawn or animated.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePrivacy, anonymity and licensing
An avatar keeps a face off the public scene, but it does not guarantee anonymity. Voice, stories, background sounds, account names, linked profiles, on-screen notifications or an accidentally visible camera source can identify a creator. Review every scene source and privacy setting before going live, and separate public account details from information you do not intend to disclose.

Privacy behavior belongs to the specific application and configuration. VTube Studio’s phone-tracking FAQ makes the limited claim quoted above about calculated parameters and raw video on the PC. Treat that as the vendor’s description, not an independent audit, and read the current privacy documentation for any other tracker.
Licensing also varies. VTube Studio’s FAQ distinguishes terms for individual or smaller creators from terms for larger companies, and its free and paid versions have feature differences such as watermark removal and extended phone-to-PC streaming. Those terms and features can change; verify the current license before monetizing, commissioning work for a business or distributing recordings.
Common problems and practical fixes
The model does not move
- Confirm that the avatar format matches the application. A Live2D-only application will not animate a 3D model.
- Check that the correct camera, phone connection or microphone is selected and that the operating system has granted access.
- Return to the application’s calibration screen and verify that movement parameters are changing before troubleshooting the broadcast scene.
Tracking is unstable or expressions are wrong
- Improve the camera view of your face and remove anything that obscures key features.
- Recalibrate from a neutral expression, then test one movement at a time.
- Inspect the model’s parameter mapping; the tracker may be working while the rig is assigned to an unintended expression.
The phone will not connect to the computer
- Check that both devices meet the application’s supported-device requirements and are on the network arrangement described in its manual.
- Verify that the desktop app is waiting for phone data and that local-network permissions are enabled.
- Use the webcam route as a diagnostic alternative if the application supports it.
The stream shows the wrong thing
- Review scene-source order and hide the camera source if only the avatar should be visible.
- Record a local test to catch desktop notifications, private windows or an unmuted monitoring source before broadcasting.
What two studies report about the people behind the avatars
A 2025 study by Daye Kim, Sebin Lee, Yoonseo Jun, Yujin Shin and Jungjin Lee surveyed equipment and interviewed 16 professional VTubers; the authors describe fragmented tools and multitasking as practical burdens. That finding describes the interviewed professionals, not every creator.
A 2023 qualitative study by Qian Wan and Zhicong Lu examined 16 Chinese-speaking VTubers and discussed avatar-mediated identity, performance and gender. Its language group and sample design matter: it offers context for those participants, not a population-wide measurement. No verified market-size or total-creator statistic is established here.
How to choose a sensible first setup
- Choose Live2D when facial expression and an illustrated close-up are the priority and you are prepared to obtain or commission layered, rigged art.
- Choose 3D when body movement, dancing, turning or a virtual stage is central enough to justify additional tracking and calibration.
- Choose PNGTuber when you want the lightest asset workflow, can work with prepared states and prefer to spend effort on audio and content rather than rigging.
- Add control hardware later if shortcuts would improve your performance; it is not a prerequisite.
Software support, device compatibility, privacy wording, licensing and feature availability change over time. Check the current manuals and terms for the exact applications and model assets you intend to use before committing to a setup.
