Put it in an image element when you want to show a static preview, or in a page’s og:image metadata when the image should appear in a link preview. It is not a video player URL: use the platform’s embed code or player URL when visitors need to watch the video.
What a thumbnail URL contains
A thumbnail URL points to an image file or image-generation endpoint associated with content such as a video, article, product or social post. A service may return several versions of the same thumbnail, commonly with different dimensions. The address itself identifies the image; it does not automatically create playback controls or load the original content.
For YouTube API resources, thumbnail information is returned in a snippet.thumbnails object. Entries such as default, medium and high can include a URL, width and height. The available sizes differ by resource, and width or height can be absent, so use the fields actually returned rather than assuming every video has the same set.

Replacing an embed URL with an image URL gives you a picture, not a player. Conversely, placing a player URL in an image element usually produces a broken image because the response is HTML or a player application rather than an image.

How to find a YouTube thumbnail URL
Use API metadata when you need a dependable value
- Request the video resource through the YouTube Data API with the fields that include its snippet.
- Read the returned
snippet.thumbnailsobject. - Choose an entry whose dimensions suit the space where you will display it, such as
mediumorhigh. - Use that entry’s actual
urlvalue and, when supplied, itswidthandheight.
Do not hard-code a presumed URL pattern as if it worked for every video. The API response is the authoritative list for that resource, and available sizes can vary.
Choose the right size
- Use a smaller returned image for compact lists where bandwidth matters.
- Use a larger returned image for a hero card or large preview, while checking its aspect ratio.
- Keep the displayed ratio consistent with the source to avoid unexpected cropping.
- Store the URL only if your application can tolerate a platform changing or replacing hosted assets; otherwise fetch and cache the image under your own retention policy.
Display a thumbnail on your website
Use the URL as the src of an image. Always provide useful alternative text, and reserve space with dimensions or CSS to reduce layout movement.

</article>Replace the placeholder with the URL returned for the specific item. If the image is decorative, use an empty alt attribute; if it is the link’s only meaningful label, describe the destination accurately.
Protect your layout and users
- Set
widthandheight, or use CSSaspect-ratio, so the card has a stable box before the image arrives. - Use
loading="lazy"for thumbnails below the initial viewport. - Do not place untrusted URL text into HTML without proper attribute escaping.
- Check licensing and the platform’s terms before downloading, modifying or redistributing thumbnails.
Use a thumbnail in a link preview
Social networks and messaging clients commonly inspect Open Graph metadata in the page being shared. Set og:image to an image URL that represents that page. The metadata belongs in the page’s <head>, not inside the video player.

</head>Use an HTTPS image URL when possible and make sure it is reachable by the crawler that generates the preview. A page’s og:image can be a thumbnail generated from a video, but it is still separate from the URL that plays that video.

Embed the playable YouTube video
When the goal is playback, open the video’s Share menu, choose Embed, copy the provided HTML and paste it into your page. YouTube’s privacy-enhanced option uses the youtube-nocookie.com embed domain instead of youtube.com. The resulting iframe is a player; it should not be substituted for the thumbnail in an <img> element.

></iframe>Use the exact embed URL and attributes supplied by the platform for the video and account settings involved. A clickable thumbnail linking to the watch page is often lighter than loading a player immediately; an iframe is appropriate when playback on the page is the requirement.
Set a custom YouTube thumbnail
Displaying a thumbnail and changing a video’s thumbnail are different operations. To set a custom image, the YouTube Data API provides the thumbnails.set method. It requires authorization and accepts JPEG, PNG or application/octet-stream media, with a maximum upload size of 50 MB. Uploading the file associates it with the video; editing a URL does not.
- Prepare a permitted image file within the 50 MB limit.
- Authenticate an API request with the required authorization scope.
- Call
thumbnails.setfor the target video and upload the image. - Read the updated video metadata to obtain the thumbnail URL that the service returns.
Because authorization, quota and account permissions affect this operation, treat it as a separate API workflow from simply reading a thumbnail URL.
Stable thumbnails for search and indexing
For each video you want indexed, Google Search Central recommends one unique and stable thumbnail URL. This is a recommendation for helping crawlers associate a consistent image with a particular video, not a guarantee that a page or video will appear in search. Avoid rotating several unrelated URLs for the same indexed video unless your publishing system deliberately handles that change.

Before publishing
- Confirm the URL returns an image rather than an HTML error page.
- Check that the image remains reachable without an interactive login.
- Use one canonical thumbnail URL for that video in structured data and relevant page metadata.
- Verify that the image depicts the video and that its text is legible at the intended display size.
Troubleshooting thumbnail URLs
The image is broken
Inspect the response in your browser’s network panel. A typo, expired signed URL, access restriction, redirect policy or a server returning HTML instead of an image can all cause failure. Replace the value with the current URL returned by the API and confirm the response has an image content type.
The thumbnail is blurry
Select a larger size that the resource actually provides, then display it at no more than its natural dimensions. Upscaling a small default image cannot restore detail.

Check that og:image is on the shared page, uses the intended absolute URL and is accessible to crawlers. Preview systems may cache metadata, so a corrected tag can take time to replace an older preview.
A player appears where an image should be
Use the image entry from snippet.thumbnails for src. Keep the watch or embed URL in a link or iframe instead.
The API has no expected size
Do not assume a missing size is an error. Enumerate the keys returned under snippet.thumbnails, select an available option and use its supplied dimensions when present.

A custom upload is rejected
Check authorization, the media type and the 50 MB maximum. A URL change cannot perform the upload; call the authorized thumbnails.set method with a supported file.

Do all videos have the same thumbnail sizes?
No. Read the sizes and dimensions returned for each resource instead of assuming a fixed set.
Is changing a thumbnail URL enough to set a custom thumbnail?
No. A custom thumbnail requires the authorized thumbnails.set upload operation.
Does a stable thumbnail guarantee a search result?
No. Stability follows Google’s indexing recommendation, but search appearance depends on many other factors.
