A Specialized Investment Fund (SIF) is a strategy category within India’s SEBI-regulated mutual-fund framework. A registered mutual fund can launch one only after meeting an eligibility route for its asset-management company (AMC) and receiving prior SEBI approval. SIFs have a statutory minimum investment of ₹10 lakh across their investment strategies, except for accredited investors. Their portfolios may use more specialized designs than conventional mutual funds, including limited unhedged short exposure in some strategies, but the SIF label does not describe every fund’s risk or liquidity. The live strategy information document is the controlling source for objectives, permitted investments, fees, dealing frequency and risks.
SEBI’s February 27, 2025 regulatory framework, its April 9, 2025 clarification, the Mutual Funds Master Circular dated March 20, 2026 and each strategy’s latest offer documents should be read together.

What a Specialized Investment Fund is
SEBI introduced SIF provisions inside the mutual-fund regulations. In legal terms, an SIF is therefore a regulated mutual-fund structure with a permitted “investment strategy”; it is not an unregulated pool and is not automatically the same product as a hedge fund, Portfolio Management Service (PMS) account or Alternative Investment Fund (AIF).

The SIF framework gives an eligible mutual fund room to design strategies with more specific exposures, portfolio-construction methods or dealing terms than a plain long-only scheme. That extra flexibility does not create a return promise or remove market, liquidity or manager risk.

“Investment strategy” is the product investors buy
SEBI describes the product launched under an SIF as an investment strategy. The offer document must state whether that strategy is open-ended, close-ended or interval, and must explain how often investors may subscribe or redeem. Consequently, there is no single SIF liquidity schedule: one strategy may offer relatively frequent dealing while another may restrict redemptions to specified intervals or a fixed term.
What the SIF label does not tell you
- It does not establish that the strategy uses derivatives, short-selling, leverage-like exposure or a particular asset class.
- It does not mean every SIF has daily liquidity or that every strategy is suitable for a short-term investor.
- It does not indicate expected performance. Regulatory approval, AMC size and manager experience are eligibility conditions, not guarantees.
- It does not provide a universal fee, tax treatment or risk rating. Those details must be checked in the current strategy information document and addenda.
Which AMCs may establish an SIF?
The eligibility tests below apply to the mutual fund and its AMC, not to an individual investor. A mutual fund must apply for prior SEBI approval before establishing an SIF. SEBI’s 2025 framework and the March 20, 2026 Master Circular provide two routes.
| Eligibility route | Requirements | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Track-record route | The mutual fund must have operated for at least three years and have average assets under management (AUM) of at least ₹10,000 crore during the immediately preceding three years. | This route relies on the fund’s established operating history and scale. |
| Alternate personnel-and-scale route | The AMC must appoint a chief investment officer (CIO) with at least 10 years of fund-management experience and average managed AUM of at least ₹5,000 crore. It must also appoint an additional fund manager with at least three years of experience and average managed AUM of at least ₹500 crore. | This route focuses on named investment professionals’ experience and assets managed, rather than requiring the mutual fund itself to satisfy the three-year/₹10,000-crore track-record test. |
Both routes include a condition concerning SEBI enforcement action against the sponsor or AMC during the preceding three years. Meeting a route does not by itself authorize launch: the mutual fund still needs SEBI’s prior approval and must follow the operative framework and subsequent directions.
These numbers should not be read as an investor-screening test. A person does not qualify for an SIF merely by having ₹10 lakh, and failing to meet an AMC route is not a statement about an investor’s financial capacity. The routes determine whether the product sponsor may establish the vehicle.

Who may invest and what the ₹10 lakh rule means
Regulation 49X(1), as reproduced in SEBI’s framework materials, states: “A Specialized Investment Fund shall not accept from an investor, an investment amount less than ten lakh rupees across all investment strategies in the manner as may be specified by the Board:” The regulation makes an exception for an accredited investor.
In practical terms, a non-accredited investor must meet a ₹10 lakh minimum under the applicable SIF process, while an accredited investor is subject to the stated exception. The wording refers to investment across all investment strategies, and SEBI issued a separate circular on how the threshold is to be monitored. It is unsafe to assume that the amount is automatically calculated per scheme, per AMC, per folio or per PAN unless the current application process and scheme documents expressly say so.
Before submitting an application, ask the AMC or distributor how it applies the threshold, what evidence it requires for accredited-investor status, and how additional purchases, switches, redemptions and simultaneous holdings are treated. Check the latest SEBI circular on monitoring the minimum investment threshold, July 29, 2025, together with the live strategy information document. Do not treat a marketing page or an old presentation as a substitute for those documents.
How SIF structure and strategy terms work
An SIF is a wrapper for one or more distinct strategies. Each strategy can have its own objective, portfolio limits, dealing calendar, expenses and risk disclosures. The same AMC may therefore offer strategies with very different return drivers and liquidity.

Dealing formats
- Open-ended: subscriptions and redemptions occur at the frequency and on the conditions stated in the strategy documents. “Open-ended” does not automatically mean every day or that an exit load never applies.
- Close-ended: investors generally commit for a stated term and may not be able to redeem whenever they choose. Any exchange listing, premature-exit mechanism or other facility must be confirmed in the documents.
- Interval: subscriptions or redemptions are available only during specified windows. Missing a window can delay the next opportunity to transact.
Five comparisons to make between SIF strategies
| Comparison | Questions to answer from the current information document |
|---|---|
| Objective and exposures | What assets, sectors, issuers or market conditions is the strategy designed to target? Is it long-only, market-neutral, credit-oriented or otherwise specialized? |
| Derivatives and exposure limits | Which derivatives are permitted? What are the gross and net exposure limits? Can the strategy hold an unhedged short position, and if so, what ceiling applies? |
| Concentration and credit | What issuer, sector, group and credit-quality limits apply? Are limits expressed as ceilings that the manager may approach? |
| Liquidity and exit terms | Is the strategy open-ended, close-ended or interval? How often can you subscribe or redeem? Are there exit loads, gates, notice periods or other restrictions? |
| Costs and risk language | What recurring expenses, management charges and other applicable costs are disclosed? What specific risk factors and restrictions does the document list? |
Limits are boundaries, not forecasts. A stated maximum exposure does not mean the manager will use the full amount, and it says nothing by itself about returns.
Example: how a long-short SIF can differ from a conventional fund
The SEBI-filed qsif Equity Long-Short Fund Investment Strategy Information Document, signed by Sandeep Tandon on August 6, 2025, illustrates the kind of specialized design the framework can accommodate. That particular strategy states a long-exposure limit of up to 50% and unhedged short exposure of up to 25%, subject to the derivative limits described in its document.
Those figures belong to that filed strategy; they are not a rule for every SIF. A short position can lose value when the shorted security rises, while derivatives can change the portfolio’s sensitivity to market movements, financing conditions and volatility. Investors should read the exact definitions of “long,” “short,” gross exposure and net exposure in the strategy document rather than infer them from the name.

Principal risks an SIF investor must understand
Market and leverage-like exposure
Derivatives can increase, reduce or reshape market exposure without requiring the same cash outlay as a direct purchase. An unhedged short position introduces a loss mechanism that a long-only investor may not have encountered: if the asset rises, closing the short can cost more. The permitted amount and instruments vary by strategy, so read the exposure and collateral rules rather than general descriptions of SIFs.
Strategy and manager risk
A specialist strategy can behave very differently from a diversified, long-only mutual fund. Returns may depend on security selection, hedging, relative-value judgments, tactical positioning, model assumptions or the manager’s ability to execute within stated limits. The objective and restrictions explain what the manager may do; they do not establish expected performance or a minimum return.
Liquidity and dealing risk
A close-ended or interval strategy may not permit redemption when cash is needed. Even an open-ended strategy can impose a dealing schedule, notice requirement, exit load or other applicable condition. In stressed markets, selling a position may also take longer or require a price concession. Match the strategy’s actual redemption terms to your own time horizon and emergency-liquidity needs.

SIF rules retain issuer and sector restrictions, but a limit is a ceiling rather than a promise that the portfolio will be broadly diversified. A strategy with concentrated positions can be affected sharply by one issuer, industry or theme. Debt-focused strategies additionally face rating migration, default, recovery uncertainty and difficulty selling an instrument when market liquidity deteriorates.
Best Value
No assurance of returns
Neither the SIF framework nor a strategy’s regulatory filing promises profit. The cited long-short document’s no-guarantee statement is an explicit reminder, not an exception. Treat projected, target or illustrative numbers in marketing material as non-binding unless the current legal documents state otherwise—and a legal document still cannot eliminate investment risk.
Costs and suitability
Specialized management, trading, derivatives, custody and other operating activities can affect net returns. There is no single SIF fee figure established for every strategy. Review the current expense disclosure, applicable charges and transaction conditions, then consider whether the minimum investment, complexity and possible loss fit your objectives, horizon, liquidity needs and tolerance for drawdowns. A ₹10 lakh threshold is an entry requirement, not evidence that an investment is affordable or suitable for you.
A practical due-diligence process before investing
- Identify the legal product. Confirm that the proposal is an SIF investment strategy under the mutual-fund framework, not a PMS, AIF or an informal “hedge fund” description.
- Obtain the latest documents. Download the current strategy information document, offer document, addenda and any notices from the AMC or SEBI. Check issue dates and whether a newer version changes limits, fees or dealing terms.
- Write down the objective in your own words. Note the assets, benchmark or reference approach, expected holding style and circumstances in which the strategy may lose money.
- Map the exposure rules. Record permitted derivatives, gross and net exposure, short-position ceilings, borrowing or collateral provisions and concentration limits. Do not infer these from the strategy’s name.
- Test liquidity against your cash needs. Mark subscription and redemption windows, notice periods, exit loads, gates and the stated close-ended or interval term. Keep emergency money outside an investment that cannot be redeemed on demand.
- Verify the threshold and investor category. Ask how the ₹10 lakh minimum is monitored across strategies and what documents establish accredited status, if you intend to rely on the exception.
- Calculate total cost. Include recurring expenses and any applicable charges, not just the headline management fee. Consider how turnover and derivatives may affect expenses.
- Challenge performance claims. Separate disclosed historical information from targets or examples. Regulatory permissions and manager experience are not performance evidence.
- Confirm operational details. Use the AMC’s official application process, read risk disclosures, retain copies of signed documents and make sure the bank account, nominee and redemption instructions are correct.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every SIF is a short-selling or high-leverage product.
- Assuming “open-ended” means daily liquidity without checking the actual dealing calendar.
- Confusing the AMC’s ₹10,000-crore or ₹5,000-crore eligibility figures with an investor’s required wealth.
- Treating the ₹10 lakh rule as a guaranteed per-scheme or per-PAN calculation when the current monitoring instructions may define the process differently.
- Using exposure limits as a return forecast.
- Relying on an old brochure after a strategy document or SEBI direction has changed.
- Believing SEBI approval removes market, credit, liquidity or operational risk.
Bottom line for an Indian investor
An SIF is best understood as a regulated mutual-fund vehicle for a specifically documented investment strategy, not as a universal risk category. The framework permits eligible AMCs to offer more specialized portfolio designs, while requiring a ₹10 lakh minimum across SIF strategies for non-accredited investors and preserving mutual-fund oversight. Suitability depends on the individual strategy’s exposures, liquidity, concentration limits, costs and risk disclosures. Read the latest SEBI and AMC documents, verify how the threshold applies to your circumstances, and invest only when you can explain how the strategy works and how you would exit it.
