Players use conversation, private information, observed behavior, and group decisions to work out who is helping their side and who is secretly working against it.
What is a social deduction game?
In a social deduction game, the important facts are not available equally to everyone. Each player has a role, identity, or allegiance that may be hidden from the rest of the table. One side usually tries to identify members of an opposing side, while concealed opponents try to survive, misdirect the group, or complete a different objective.

The deduction happens socially. Players compare what they were told, ask questions, make public claims, notice contradictions, and decide whom to trust. A player may vote to remove someone, nominate a suspect, choose a team, or influence another group decision. The exact action depends on the game. Discussion, voting, role powers, timed phases, and elimination are common design choices, not requirements shared by every title.

Clocktower Radio’s explanation of the genre describes the familiar pattern of secret roles, identifying an opposing team, conversation, and group voting. Some games are short party experiences; others use many distinct characters, a facilitator, multiple information phases, or rules that let players remain active after their character dies.

What do roles do?
Roles are the main mechanism for creating unequal and private information. A role can tell you which team you belong to, grant a special action, determine what you learn, restrict what you may say, or change how other players interact with you. Two people sitting next to each other can therefore have completely different evidence and incentives.
Team identity
The simplest role distinction is allegiance. A good, loyal, or investigative team may need to discover the opposing faction. An evil, hidden, or infiltrating team may know more about the board and try to appear trustworthy. Some designs add a third faction with its own victory condition, or give individual players goals that do not perfectly match their teammates’ interests.
Character abilities
A role may let a player inspect another person, protect someone, block an action, exchange information, nominate a target, or alter a vote. Abilities create evidence that must be interpreted rather than merely collected: a result may be incomplete, conditional, or affected by another character. Role powers also give players reasons to make claims and reasons to keep those claims private.

Good players share information to solve the mystery, while evil players may lie about who they are and what they know. That is an example of a particular game’s information structure, not a universal rule for the genre. Some other games give everyone only a team card; others provide extensive personal powers.
Information can be uncertain
Do not assume that every role produces a perfectly reliable fact. A game may include characters whose information is deliberately false, players who receive only a partial result, or effects that make an investigation difficult to interpret. Even accurate information can be misunderstood if the player reports it incorrectly or if the group lacks the context to use it.
How does bluffing work?
Bluffing is the deliberate presentation of a claim, explanation, or behavior that helps conceal a player’s real interests. A hidden opponent may claim to have an investigative role, report a result that never happened, support a popular accusation, or stay quiet until the discussion moves in a safe direction. The strongest bluffs usually fit the information that a genuine role could plausibly possess.

Building a believable claim
A player who needs to hide an opposing identity has to manage several details at once:
- Role story: Explain what role you have and what it would reasonably allow you to know or do.
- Timing: Decide when to reveal information. An immediate claim may look rehearsed, while a late claim may seem like an emergency response.
- Consistency: Keep later statements compatible with earlier ones and with the game’s phase order.
- Relationships: Account for why you trusted, questioned, defended, or voted against particular people.
- Risk: Avoid a claim that can be easily checked by several independent players.
Bluffing is not limited to speaking. A player can misdirect through a vote, withhold a useful fact, ask questions that make another person look suspicious, or allow a false theory to spread. Silence can also be a choice: it may protect a vulnerable role, prevent the opposing team from learning something, or simply reflect a player who is trying to observe before committing.
Testing a bluff
Deduction is the response to bluffing. Players test a claim against the known rules, other reports, the order in which events occurred, and the speaker’s behavior. Useful questions include:
- Could this role legally have received the information being claimed?
- Does the account fit what other players observed?
- Did the player reveal the claim when it helped their alleged team, or only after suspicion turned toward them?
- Would the person’s votes and questions make sense if the claim were true?
- Is there a simpler explanation that accounts for both the claim and the apparent contradiction?
One lie is not automatic proof of an opposing role. Depending on the rules, a good player may conceal information, make a mistake, protect another role, or receive unreliable information. The conclusion should come from the whole pattern of evidence rather than from a single awkward sentence.
What is table talk?
Table talk is the social reasoning layer of the game: the public and private conversation through which players exchange claims, challenge accounts, persuade one another, and decide what information deserves weight. It includes both what people say and how they respond when questioned.
Public claims and questions
A player might announce a role, describe an investigation, ask someone to account for a vote, or propose a theory about the opposing team. Questions can be open-ended (“What did you learn?”) or targeted (“Why did you change your vote after that claim?”). The group is not only collecting facts; it is evaluating confidence, timing, specificity, and consistency.

Listening and behavior
Players can learn from hesitation, sudden agreement, repeated deflection, overconfident certainty, or a willingness to let someone else take the blame. None of these behaviors is conclusive on its own. A quiet player may be hiding something, protecting a role, or simply processing a complicated set of claims. An enthusiastic speaker may be a helpful investigator or a skilled deceiver.
The Pandemonium Institute’s overview of Blood on the Clocktower explicitly presents a range of participation, from leading the discussion to sitting quietly and deducing. Other games impose their own limits on when players may speak, whether private conversations are allowed, and what information can be shared. Always follow the specific rulebook rather than importing conversation rules from another title.
Information management
Good table talk balances disclosure and protection. Revealing everything immediately may help the opposing team identify powerful roles. Revealing too little may prevent the group from connecting separate reports. Players often share low-risk information first, coordinate claims, or wait until a vote or phase makes a disclosure useful. The right choice depends on the role, the game’s information flow, and how much time remains.
How does a typical session unfold?
Many social deduction games use a structure similar to the sequence below, but a particular game may omit steps, reorder them, or replace voting with another decision system.
- Secret setup: Each player receives a hidden role, team, or character. Some players may privately learn teammates or receive an initial piece of information.
- Information phase: A moderator, app, or rule procedure resolves early abilities. Players may inspect, protect, identify, or alter information according to their roles.
- Discussion: The group shares claims and observations. Players decide which reports to trust and which contradictions need investigation.
- Proposal or accusation: The table selects a target, nominates a suspect, assembles a team, or makes another consequential proposal.
- Group decision: Players vote or use the game’s specified method to approve, reject, or resolve the proposal.
- Resolution and next phase: The game applies the result, reveals only the information permitted by the rules, and begins another round until a victory condition is met.
Elimination is also variable. In some designs, a targeted player leaves and contributes no further information. In others, a dead or eliminated player can still speak, vote under restrictions, or use a final ability. That distinction strongly affects how aggressively players should pursue an accusation.
Blood on the Clocktower as a concrete example
Blood on the Clocktower illustrates how a single design can combine hidden teams, character abilities, extensive conversation, and continued participation. The publisher describes it as a social game of deduction and deception for five to twenty players, with opposing good and evil teams and a Storyteller. Asmodee’s product listing gives the same 5–20 player range and describes the Storyteller as conducting play and using the game’s pieces.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The Storyteller is a facilitator who runs phases, provides information, resolves abilities, and applies the rules. That role changes the experience compared with a game that can be dealt out and played without a moderator. It also allows the game to support many character interactions while keeping information hidden from the wider group.

The official description captures the central conflict: “Good players share information to solve the mystery whilst evil players lie about who they are and what they know.” This sentence is a publisher statement, so it explains that game’s intended structure rather than establishing a definition for every social deduction game.
One notable design choice is that death does not necessarily end a player’s participation. The publisher’s About the Game page emphasizes continued involvement after death. A player may therefore remain part of the conversation or retain a limited effect on the outcome, rather than simply waiting for the session to finish. The game’s terminology includes “character” and “day phase”; the officially associated glossary is useful when those terms need a precise rules meaning.
How to compare social deduction games
Calling two games “social deduction” does not mean they create the same experience. Use the following questions when choosing a title for a group or learning a new ruleset:
| Comparison axis | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Group size | What player range does the game support, and does your group fit it? | The amount of information, speaking time, and faction balance can change sharply with player count. |
| Information and roles | Do players have unique abilities and private facts, or mainly a team identity? | More powers create richer evidence but also increase rules and interpretation demands. |
| Conversation | Is discussion open, private, timed, phased, or restricted? | Conversation limits determine how much table talk is possible and how easily players can coordinate. |
| Elimination and participation | Does a targeted player stop taking part, or can they keep talking or affect the result? | Continued participation changes the cost of an accusation and reduces downtime for eliminated players. |
| Facilitation | Is a moderator, Storyteller, app, or other facilitator required? | A facilitator can manage complex hidden information but adds a teaching and hosting responsibility. |
| Decision structure | Does the group vote, nominate, choose teams, or resolve accusations another way? | The decision system determines what evidence matters and when persuasion has its greatest effect. |
These axes describe design choices, not a ranking. A small game with simple roles may be ideal for newcomers, while a larger facilitated game may suit a group that enjoys tracking many competing claims.

If you are on the investigative side
- Record claims and the phase in which they were made instead of relying on memory.
- Ask for specific, checkable details rather than accepting a broad role label.
- Compare independent accounts before treating a contradiction as decisive.
- Explain why a vote helps your team; a transparent reason gives others information even if they disagree.
- Protect information that would immediately identify a powerful role unless sharing it is necessary to prevent a loss.
If you are hiding an opposing identity
- Learn the public rules well enough that your claim fits legal timing and ability limits.
- Prepare a consistent account before the discussion reaches you.
- Contribute enough analysis to appear engaged, but do not create unnecessary contradictions.
- Use other players’ real uncertainty as cover; an accusation does not need to be invented if the table already has competing explanations.
- Plan for what happens if your claim is challenged, including which facts you can safely concede.
If you are facilitating
- Separate private information from public announcements and resolve effects in the order the rules specify.
- Remind players of speaking, voting, and timing limits without hinting which claims are true.
- Track deaths, protected players, nominations, and unresolved abilities so that a busy discussion does not cause an accidental reveal.
- Explain the victory conditions before play begins and clarify any rule that changes after elimination.
Common misconceptions
“Every social deduction game has a moderator.”
Some games need a moderator or Storyteller to administer hidden actions and phases; others handle setup and resolution with cards, a script, or an app. Facilitation is a comparison point, not a genre requirement.

“Players must lie to participate.”
Concealed opponents often bluff, but an investigative player may also withhold information, test a theory, or give an intentionally incomplete answer. The rules and victory conditions determine what kinds of deception are legal or useful.
“Being quiet proves someone is guilty.”
Silence is evidence only in context. Players may be quiet because they are protecting information, uncertain about the rules, or trying to listen. Treat behavior as one signal among claims, votes, abilities, and timing.
“Death always removes a player from the game.”
Some games end a dead player’s meaningful participation; others let that player continue talking or retain a restricted influence. Check the specific rules before assuming that an elimination creates complete downtime.

Choose this genre when your group enjoys conversation, uncertainty, persuasion, and interpreting behavior as much as moving pieces or optimizing a private hand. It is a strong fit for players who are comfortable being suspected and who can separate in-game deception from personal trust. It may be a poor fit when participants dislike public accusations, hidden information, or losing because another player persuaded the table.
Before starting, confirm the supported player count, whether a facilitator is needed, how long a round lasts, what happens after elimination, and whether private discussion is allowed. Those details predict the actual experience better than the genre label alone.
