A smart LED TV is a television with an LED-backlit LCD screen and built-in internet-connected software, usually an operating system plus apps for streaming and other online services. “Smart” describes the connected features. “LED” describes how the screen is lit. They are two separate properties that happen to appear in one product name.
The two labels, separated
“Smart” means connectivity and software
LG defines a smart TV as a television that connects to the internet without needing a separate set-top box or streaming device (LG USA). Samsung’s guide names three elements: internet connectivity, an operating system, and its own app service. In its words: “While different sites may give different opinions, the consensus is that a Smart TV has internet connectivity, runs on an operating system and comes with its own app service.” (Samsung US guide)

“LED” means the backlight
In ordinary usage, an LED TV is an LCD television lit from behind by LEDs, as Samsung describes in its LED vs. OLED vs. QLED guide. The LCD panel forms the picture and the LEDs supply the light. It is not a screen where each pixel is itself an LED.
Why they are not competing categories
A TV can be both LED-backlit and smart. Being “smart” tells you nothing about resolution, brightness, contrast, refresh rate or sound. Those need to be checked against the specific model’s specifications.

How a smart TV works
A smart TV pairs the display and its tuner or input ports with a software platform. Once the TV joins your home network by Wi-Fi or Ethernet, that platform can reach supported apps and services directly on the set. LG lists streaming, app downloads, screen mirroring and connections to other devices as common functions. Treat these as examples, not promises: app selection and features vary by brand, model, year and region.
Common questions about smart-TV behavior
Does it work without internet?
Yes, in part. Samsung says a smart TV can still work as a standard television without a connection, but online features such as on-demand streaming will not be available.

Do you need a streaming box?
No. Built-in apps mean a separate streaming device is not required. One remains an option for an older or non-smart TV, or if a model lacks an app you want. Subscriptions are not included, and not every app runs on every TV.
What to compare when shopping
| Question | What to check |
|---|---|
| Smart platform | Which apps and services the exact model and model year support, and the interface |
| Network | Built-in Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or both (Samsung describes wireless and wired options) |
| Display | Resolution, brightness, contrast, refresh rate and HDR, from model-specific sources |
| Offline use | Whether you rely on antenna, cable or connected devices rather than online apps |
| Extra hardware | Optional; only needed if the built-in platform lacks something you use |
The manufacturer guides cited here explain the category; they are not independent tests and do not show that one platform or panel type outperforms another. Sony’s support page on identifying whether a BRAVIA is Google TV, Android TV or another platform is a reminder that the software platform differs by model and should be verified.
