A shutout in hockey is a game in which a team allows no goals. In NHL goalie statistics, a shutout is not awarded to either goaltender if two goalies combine to keep the opponent scoreless; the NHL records it as a club shutout. There is no minimum save total required.
What is a shutout in hockey?
A shutout means one team finishes the game without scoring a goal. The statistic describes the result—zero goals allowed—not how many shots the goalie faced or saved.

The term can refer to a team result or, in NHL individual records, a goalie’s personal total. The distinction matters when more than one goalie plays.
Does a goalie need to make a certain number of saves to earn a shutout?
No minimum save count is part of the NHL’s shutout statistic. The NHL lists shutouts separately from shots against, saves, save percentage (Sv%), and goals-against average (GAA), which measure different aspects of a goalie’s performance. The NHL goalie statistics table shows these as distinct fields.

- Shutouts (SO): a counting total of games with no goals allowed.
- Saves and shots against: record workload and how many shots were stopped.
- Save percentage (Sv%): saves divided by shots faced, as defined in the NHL glossary.
- Goals-against average (GAA): goals allowed multiplied by 60 and divided by minutes played, under the NHL glossary’s definition.
For a meaningful comparison, consider SO alongside Sv%, GAA, games played or started, and shots against. Compare goalies in the same season, game type, and competition where possible; shutout totals alone do not show workload or rate performance.
Can two goalies share a shutout?
For NHL individual statistics, no. The NHL glossary states: “If two goaltenders combine for a shutout, neither receives credit for the shutout. Instead it is recorded as a Club shutout.” The club can therefore have a shutout on its record even though neither goalie receives an individual shutout.

How is a shutout recorded in goalie stats?
NHL goalie tables use SO for shutouts. It is a counting statistic, unlike Sv% and GAA, which are rates. For example, the NHL’s 2023–24 regular-season table filtered to goalies with at least one shutout presents shutouts as a separate statistical field.

Who holds the NHL shutout record?
There is no single answer until the record category is specified. NHL Records separates career shutouts, season shutouts, most consecutive shutouts in a season, and longest shutout sequences in a season. Its goaltender records index covers records from 1917–18 through 2025–26. For a current-season leader or total, consult the live NHL goalie statistics, since those figures change during the season.
A historical streak example
Brian Boucher recorded five consecutive shutouts in January 2004. NHL.com reported that the streak ended at 332:01; in the game that produced his fifth straight shutout, he made 21 saves. These are historical details, not a statement of the current record in every shutout category. NHL.com’s account of Boucher’s streak gives the context.

Why shutouts are only one part of goalie performance
A shutout count tells you how often a goalie’s team allowed no goals in games credited to that goalie under the applicable statistical rules. It does not, by itself, tell you how many shots the goalie faced, how efficiently they stopped them, or how much they played. Pair SO with the other goalie statistics and keep comparisons within the same competition and game type.
