A reverse proxy is a public-facing server that receives requests for one or more private backend servers. The browser or API client connects to the reverse proxy; the proxy chooses an origin, forwards the request, receives the response, and returns it to the client. Depending on its configuration, it can also terminate TLS, cache responses, route by hostname or path, balance traffic, run health checks, and filter requests.
Those are capabilities, not automatic guarantees. A reverse proxy does not inherently encrypt every network hop, make an origin impossible to discover, or improve every workload’s speed. Its result depends on the software, topology, rules, and trust configuration.
How a reverse proxy works
Without a reverse proxy, a client may connect directly to an application server. With one, the proxy becomes the public endpoint and the application server becomes an origin behind it.
- The client resolves the public hostname and opens a connection to the reverse proxy.
- The proxy accepts the HTTP, HTTPS, TCP, or other supported traffic.
- It selects an upstream server using rules such as hostname, URL path, port, health, or load-balancing algorithm.
- It forwards the request, often adding controlled forwarding headers.
- The upstream returns a response.
- The proxy may cache, compress, filter, transform, or log that response before sending it to the client.
NGINX summarizes the basic HTTP exchange this way: “When NGINX proxies a request, it: Sends the request to a specified proxy server Fetches the response Sends the response back to the client.” A reverse proxy can also pass requests to application servers through protocols such as FastCGI, uwsgi, SCGI, and memcached.

Reverse proxy versus forward proxy
The distinction is whose side the proxy represents:
| Characteristic | Forward proxy | Reverse proxy |
|---|---|---|
| Represents | Clients going out to the internet | Servers receiving inbound traffic |
| Typical placement | Between users or devices and destination servers | Between internet clients and origin servers |
| Common purpose | Outbound access control, privacy, or policy | Routing, load balancing, caching, TLS handling, and origin protection |
| What the destination sees | The forward proxy may appear as the requester | The origin may see the reverse proxy unless trusted forwarding headers are used |
A simple memory aid is “forward proxy for clients going out; reverse proxy for servers receiving traffic.”
What a reverse proxy can do
Route requests
Rules can send api.example.com to an API cluster, www.example.com to a web cluster, or /images/ to an object-storage or media service. This lets several applications share one public address while remaining separately deployable.
Balance load across backends
A proxy can distribute requests across healthy servers. Common Layer 7 HTTP/HTTPS methods include round robin, least connections, least time, and hashing; the available methods depend on the product edition. Health checks can remove an unhealthy endpoint and restore it when it recovers. Session affinity (“sticky sessions”) can keep a user on one backend, but it reduces flexibility and does not replace shared session storage.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not confuse proxy load balancing with DNS-only distribution. DNS-only balancing returns endpoint addresses through DNS and depends on resolver caches, so failover can be slower and origin IP addresses remain exposed. A proxied Layer 7 design can make routing decisions on each request and integrate with other proxy controls.
Cache eligible responses
The proxy may store a response and serve later requests without contacting the origin. This can reduce origin work and latency for cacheable, repeatable content. The result depends on cache headers, keys, variation by cookies or authorization, invalidation rules, object size, and hit rate. Personalized pages, private responses, rapidly changing data, and responses marked not to cache should generally bypass shared caching.

Terminate TLS
The proxy can accept HTTPS, present the certificate, decrypt the request, and forward HTTP or HTTPS to the origin. TLS termination centralizes certificates and can reduce cryptographic work on application servers. It does not automatically encrypt the proxy-to-origin leg: configure HTTPS upstream connections when that network path requires encryption, and validate origin certificates where appropriate.
Hide and control the origin
Clients normally see the proxy’s public address rather than the origin’s address. Restrict firewall access so origins accept traffic only from the proxy network or other approved systems. This reduces direct exposure, but it is not an absolute security guarantee. Misconfigured DNS, mail, monitoring, legacy services, or leaked addresses can still reveal an origin.
Apply edge controls
Depending on the implementation, the proxy can enforce request-size limits, authentication gates, rate limits, redirects, compression, access rules, logging, and protocol upgrades such as WebSockets. These controls must be explicitly configured and tested.
Layer 7 and Layer 4 choices
Layer 7 (HTTP/HTTPS) proxies understand hostnames, paths, methods, headers, cookies, and status codes. They are appropriate for application routing, HTTP caching, redirects, and web security rules. Layer 4 proxies forward TCP or UDP connections without interpreting HTTP, which supports non-HTTP protocols and can reduce application-level control. Choose based on the protocol and the decisions you need to make, not on the label alone.
Client IP addresses and trusted headers
At the backend, a proxied request can appear to come from the proxy’s address. The standardized Forwarded header and the widely used X-Forwarded-For header can carry the original client address. Your application must trust these headers only when the request came from known proxy infrastructure; otherwise a client can send forged values.

Configure the proxy to replace or append forwarding values according to your topology, then configure the framework to trust exactly the proxy ranges or hop count you operate. Use the trusted value for auditing, rate limiting, and security decisions only after that boundary is enforced.

Cloudflare is an example of a managed network of servers placed in front of web servers. NGINX is an example of software a team can operate itself, including upstream groups and application-layer balancing. Neither approach is universally best; compare required protocols, routing, health behavior, caching, identity propagation, operational control, and provider dependency.

After syntax validation with nginx -t, reload the service using your operating system’s service manager. Add explicit timeouts, buffering, WebSocket upgrade headers, cache rules, and upstream TLS only when your application requires them. A production design also needs certificate renewal, logs, metrics, capacity limits, health checking, and a tested rollback.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
- Performance: caching and connection reuse can reduce origin work; TLS termination and request inspection add proxy work. Measure end-to-end latency and origin time rather than assuming a gain.
- Reliability: run redundant proxy instances or use a managed service with an appropriate failure design. A single proxy is a single point of failure.
- Capacity: size for concurrent connections, TLS handshakes, request rate, response buffering, uploads, and peak bandwidth. Include headroom for deployments and failed nodes.
- Consistency: define cache invalidation, deployment draining, timeout, retry, and idempotency behavior. Retrying a non-idempotent request can create duplicate work.
- Cost: account for proxy compute, bandwidth, provider transfer charges, logging, certificates, monitoring, and engineering time. No universal price or performance figure applies without a specific provider and workload.
Troubleshooting reverse-proxy failures
502 Bad Gateway or connection refused
Check that the upstream process is running, the proxy can reach its private address and port, firewall rules permit the connection, and the configured protocol matches the backend. Inspect proxy error logs and test the backend directly from the proxy host.

504 Gateway Timeout
The backend did not respond within the configured timeout. Investigate slow database calls, exhausted worker pools, network loss, and an overly short proxy timeout. Do not simply raise the timeout without finding the bottleneck.
Redirect loops or incorrect HTTP/HTTPS detection
Pass the original scheme, commonly with X-Forwarded-Proto, and configure the application to trust it only from the proxy. Ensure the proxy’s TLS-termination policy and the application’s canonical URL agree.
Wrong client IP in logs or rate limits
Configure one canonical forwarding-header policy and trust only known proxy addresses. Remove client-supplied forwarding values at the edge when necessary; otherwise attackers can spoof them.
WebSockets or streaming requests fail
Confirm that the selected proxy mode supports the protocol, enable the required connection-upgrade headers, and review buffering and idle timeouts. Layer 4 forwarding may be more suitable when HTTP inspection is unnecessary.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a reverse proxy serve several domains?
Yes. Host-based routing can select different upstream groups for different domain names, provided DNS, certificates, and proxy rules are configured for each domain.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes a reverse proxy replace a firewall?
No. It can enforce application-layer rules, but network firewalls, origin allow-lists, authentication, patching, and monitoring remain separate controls.
Should traffic between proxy and origin use HTTPS?
Use HTTPS when that network segment is untrusted or policy requires encryption. TLS at the public proxy alone does not encrypt the upstream leg.
The Bottom Line
A reverse proxy is the controlled front door to backend services: it can route, balance, cache, terminate TLS, and centralize policy, but each benefit must be configured and verified for your protocol, trust boundaries, and failure model.
