Self-hosters commonly place one at the public edge so several apps can share one entry point, while selected HTTPS, authentication, access-control, rate-limiting, and load-balancing functions are managed in one place.
How a reverse proxy works
The basic request path is:
browser or client → reverse proxy → application or backend
The browser connects to the proxy’s public address. The proxy examines information such as the hostname, URL path, headers, and sometimes other request properties. It then forwards the request to a selected backend service. The backend produces a response, which travels back through the proxy to the client.

For example, a self-hosted server might answer photos.example.net with a photo application and notes.example.net with a notes application, even though both names resolve to the same public IP address. The applications can listen on separate private ports, while the proxy presents the normal HTTPS ports to the outside world.
This is different from a forward proxy. A forward proxy acts for clients making outbound requests; the destination usually sees the proxy as the requester. A reverse proxy acts for servers receiving inbound requests; the client believes it is communicating with the public service represented by the proxy.

Load balancing is one possible reverse-proxy feature, not the definition of a reverse proxy. A proxy can forward every request to one backend, distribute requests among several backends, or fail over when health checks indicate that an instance is unavailable.
Why self-hosters put a reverse proxy in front of their apps
One public entry point for multiple services
Without a proxy, each application may need its own public port, firewall rule, and certificate configuration. A reverse proxy lets several services share one public IP and the standard web ports while routing by hostname or path.
- Host-based routing:
cloud.example.net,media.example.net, andstatus.example.netcan point to different backends. - Path-based routing: one hostname can send
/wikiand/monitoringto separate services, provided those applications work correctly when mounted under those paths. - Consistent public interface: users see normal web URLs instead of a collection of high-numbered ports.
The proxy does not eliminate the need to configure the applications. Redirects, absolute URLs, WebSocket support, large uploads, and callback URLs may require application-specific settings.
Central HTTPS termination
A proxy can terminate the browser’s TLS connection. It decrypts the request at the edge, forwards it to the selected backend, and encrypts the response back to the client. NGINX documentation describes this arrangement as moving TLS computation away from upstream servers.
That convenience applies only to the first hop unless the proxy-to-backend connection is also encrypted. A common setup is:

HTTPS client → proxy HTTP or HTTPS → backend
Plain HTTP between proxy and backend may be reasonable when both are on a protected host or private network, but it is a separate security decision. Anyone who can observe that internal segment could otherwise read or modify the traffic. If the backend is on another machine, across a less-trusted network, or handling sensitive data, configure HTTPS for that hop and verify the backend certificate.
Shared authentication and access rules
Depending on the software and configuration, the proxy can enforce controls before a request reaches an application. Examples include single sign-on or basic authentication, IP allowlists and denylists, request validation, and rate limits. Traefik documents middleware for authentication, rate limiting, and related controls; NGINX documents access-control and traffic-limiting capabilities.
These protections are not automatic. A newly installed proxy does not know which paths are private, which users are allowed, or which source networks you trust. Write and test the policy for each public route. Keep an administrative interface off the public path when possible, or protect it with a stronger authentication method and network restriction.
Health checks, retries, and growth
When several backend instances exist, a proxy can distribute requests according to a configured policy. Active health checks can remove an unhealthy instance from rotation, and retries may send a failed request to another upstream. These capabilities help a growing deployment, but they add configuration and failure modes. A single-app homelab may gain more from centralized certificates and access rules than from balancing traffic.
Why use one for only one application?
Multiple backends are not required. A single application can still benefit from one public TLS endpoint, a consistent access policy, request logging, caching where appropriate, or a controlled place to add another service later. The trade-off is that the proxy becomes another component that must be patched, monitored, backed up, and recovered.

What the major implementation styles provide
Caddy, Traefik, and NGINX illustrate different ways to implement the same architectural role. The documented features below are examples, not a performance ranking or a claim that one is universally best.
| Option | Routing and upstream features | Certificate and control features | Configuration decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Caddy | reverse_proxy supports multiple upstreams, load-balancing policies, active health checks, retries, request manipulation, and configurable transports. |
Automatic HTTPS can obtain certificates from public ACME authorities for public DNS names. IP addresses and local or internal names can use locally trusted self-signed certificates when permitted. Forwarded-header trust and upstream TLS verification are configurable. | Choose whether its simpler configuration model and automatic certificate workflow fit your DNS, network, and operational habits. |
| Traefik | Service discovery can dynamically configure routes. Its documented middleware includes load balancing, rate limiting, circuit breaking, and authentication. | Supports SSL termination and ACME certificate generation. | Evaluate whether dynamic discovery matches how your services are deployed and whether its middleware covers your required controls. |
| NGINX | Provides reverse proxying and can be configured for upstream services and traffic policies. | Documentation covers TLS termination, access controls, and traffic limiting. Some pages include NGINX Plus topics, so verify whether a particular feature is available in the free edition you plan to run. | Consider the amount of routing, protocol, and policy control you need, and whether you can maintain its configuration confidently. |
Compare these choices on configuration style (static files versus service discovery), routing and protocol control, required authentication and rate controls, certificate issuance and renewal, and the operator’s ability to understand and troubleshoot the setup. The available documentation establishes feature differences, not a single winner or a universal speed advantage.
A practical deployment sequence for a self-hosted reverse proxy
The exact screens and configuration syntax depend on the product, but the order below prevents common mistakes.
- Inventory the services. Record each application’s internal address and port, whether it needs WebSockets or long-lived connections, its upload-size requirements, and whether it supports operation behind a subpath or requires its own hostname.
- Choose the public names. Decide which hostnames or paths users will access. Create DNS records that point those names to the proxy’s public address. If the address changes, arrange reliable DNS updating before enabling certificate automation.
- Expose only the proxy. Forward the required public web ports to the proxy host. Keep backend ports on the private network or bound to local interfaces unless a specific design requires otherwise.
- Define routes. For every hostname or path, select exactly one backend and specify the protocol used on the internal hop. Add WebSocket or header handling only where the application needs it.
- Plan certificates. Public DNS names can generally use an ACME certificate workflow. DNS-based challenges require credentials for the DNS provider. Local names and IP addresses may require locally trusted certificates instead of publicly trusted certificates. Restrict on-demand TLS so arbitrary users cannot make your proxy request certificates for unlimited names.
- Decide whether the internal hop is encrypted. If it uses HTTPS, keep certificate verification enabled. Configure an appropriate trust pool and server name when the backend uses a private certificate authority or a name different from its address.
- Apply access policy. Add authentication, source-IP restrictions, rate limits, and request validation deliberately. Test both allowed and denied cases, including administrative paths.
- Configure trusted proxy headers. Client-IP headers such as
X-Forwarded-Forare input, not proof. Trust them only from explicitly configured proxy IP ranges. If another proxy or CDN sits in front, model every hop and define which addresses are allowed to supply those headers. - Test from outside your network. Check certificate names, redirects, login flows, uploads, WebSockets, error pages, and access restrictions from a real external connection. Also test direct access to backend ports; it should fail if the design intends the proxy to be the only public entry point.
- Operate it as production infrastructure. Back up configuration and certificate data, monitor expiry and backend health, patch the proxy and applications, and document how to restore routing after a host failure.
Security boundaries that are easy to misunderstand
HTTPS at the edge does not encrypt every hop
A browser showing a padlock proves that the browser-to-proxy connection is encrypted and the certificate is accepted. It does not by itself prove that the proxy-to-application connection is encrypted or authenticated. Document the network boundary and choose HTTP or HTTPS for the upstream based on who can access that segment.
Forwarded headers can be spoofed
Applications often use forwarded headers to learn the original client IP, scheme, or host. If the proxy accepts those headers from any Internet client, an attacker can submit a false address and potentially bypass an IP rule, poison logs, or alter application behavior. Caddy’s documented default is to ignore incoming forwarded-header values unless trusted proxy ranges are configured. Apply the same principle to any product: trust only known intermediary addresses, and strip or overwrite untrusted values.

Do not disable upstream certificate verification casually
Turning off verification may make a broken HTTPS backend appear to work, but it removes protection against a man-in-the-middle attack on that hop. Install the correct trust chain, set the expected server name, or use a private certificate authority that the proxy trusts. Treat an option named “skip verification” as a temporary diagnostic measure, not a deployment fix.
The proxy is an exposed service
It has its own vulnerabilities, credentials, logs, resource limits, and misconfiguration risks. It can also become a single point of failure: if it stops, every application behind it may disappear from the public Internet even when the backends are healthy. Keep its management interface restricted, limit administrative credentials, review logs for unexpected routes, and maintain a recovery path that does not depend on the proxy being online.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Certificate automation: benefits and failure cases
Automatic renewal removes repetitive certificate work, but it depends on external conditions. The public name must resolve correctly, the challenge must reach the proxy or DNS provider, and firewalls must permit the required validation traffic. DNS challenges additionally require credentials with enough permission to create the validation record and no more permission than necessary.
- Wrong DNS target: the certificate authority reaches a different server. Correct the record or wait for the relevant DNS caches to expire.
- Blocked validation port: HTTP-based validation cannot reach the proxy. Check router forwarding, host firewalls, and any upstream filtering.
- Insufficient DNS permissions: a DNS challenge cannot create its record. Use a narrowly scoped provider token with the required zone access.
- Internal-only name: a public certificate authority cannot validate a name that is not publicly resolvable. Use a local trust arrangement or a publicly registered name with an appropriate internal design.
- On-demand abuse risk: unrestricted certificate requests can consume limits or be used to target names you do not control. Require an allowlist or another authorization mechanism.
When a reverse proxy is unnecessary
You may not need one when an application is used only on a private LAN, already provides the HTTPS and authentication features you require, and does not need a shared public entry point. Adding a proxy solely because it is popular can increase maintenance without solving a real problem.
Conversely, direct port forwarding is not automatically simpler in the long run. If several services each need public HTTPS, separate certificates, access rules, and firewall exceptions, centralizing those responsibilities may reduce duplicated work. Make the decision from the services, threat model, and operator capacity rather than from the number of containers alone.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The proxy returns a gateway error
- Confirm that the backend is running and listening on the address and port configured in the route.
- Check whether the proxy host can reach that address through its firewall and network namespace.
- Verify the upstream protocol. Sending HTTP to an HTTPS listener, or the reverse, commonly fails.
- Inspect proxy and backend logs together; a timeout, refused connection, and certificate failure point to different fixes.
The application sees the proxy’s IP instead of the visitor’s
Configure the application to understand the proxy’s forwarded headers, then configure the proxy’s trusted-proxy ranges correctly. Do not solve this by trusting headers from every source.
HTTPS works externally but not on the internal network
Check split-DNS behavior, hairpin NAT support, and whether internal clients trust the certificate authority used for local names. An internal certificate or address arrangement may need to differ from the public path.
Only some application features fail
Interactive features often use WebSockets or another upgraded connection; large uploads may exceed a proxy request limit; and applications mounted under a path may generate incorrect absolute URLs. Compare the failing request with a direct backend test and adjust only the route-specific settings that the application requires.

Bottom line
A reverse proxy is the public-facing traffic director in front of one or more private services. Self-hosters use it to share a clean entry point, centralize selected HTTPS and access controls, and optionally add health checks or load balancing. It is not a security guarantee: verify both network hops, trust forwarded headers only across known proxy boundaries, retain upstream certificate verification, and maintain the proxy as carefully as the applications behind it.
