What Is a Quasinormal Mode, and How Is It Detected in Gravitational Waves?

A quasinormal mode (QNM) is a characteristic, damped vibration of a disturbed system. In gravitational-wave astronomy, the system is usually the black hole created when two black holes merge. The remnant is initially distorted, then settles toward a steady rotating, or Kerr, black hole by emitting a superposition of damped oscillations called ringdown.

Researchers detect a QNM by isolating the post-merger ringdown, comparing the noisy detector data with waveform models, and testing whether the fitted oscillation frequencies and decay times are supported by the data. For a Kerr black hole in general relativity, those quantities are fixed by the remnant’s mass and spin. Measuring more than one mode therefore enables black-hole spectroscopy: a test of whether one mass-spin pair explains the observed ringdown as general relativity predicts.

What a quasinormal mode means

A black hole’s characteristic response

When two black holes collide, the merger leaves a single remnant that is not immediately in its final equilibrium state. It is distorted, and that distortion radiates away as gravitational waves. The late part of the signal is the black hole’s ringdown. A quasinormal mode is one of the characteristic ways that the remnant can oscillate while losing energy.

The word “mode” means a particular pattern of oscillation. “Quasinormal” indicates that the oscillation is not perfectly sustained: its amplitude decreases with time. A QNM is therefore not a material object, a particle, or an additional source orbiting the remnant. It is a mathematical and physical description of the remnant’s damped response.

The waveform of one mode

A single mode can be represented schematically as a sinusoid multiplied by an exponentially decreasing amplitude:

h(t) = A exp[-(t − t₀)/τ] cos[2πf(t − t₀) + φ]

Here, f is the oscillation frequency, τ is the damping time, A is the amplitude at a chosen reference time t₀, and φ is a phase. In a technical treatment, the frequency and damping are combined in a complex mode frequency. Its real part describes the oscillation; its imaginary part describes how quickly the amplitude decays.

The observed ringdown is normally modeled as a sum of modes rather than one isolated sinusoid. A dominant fundamental mode may be accompanied by overtones or other secondary tones. Each contributes its own frequency, decay time, amplitude and phase, but all arise from the same newly formed remnant.

Where the mode appears in a gravitational-wave signal

A binary black-hole waveform is conventionally divided into three connected stages. Their roles are different, so identifying the ringdown requires knowing which part of the data is being analyzed.

Stage Physical description Use in QNM detection
Inspiral The two black holes orbit one another and lose energy through gravitational radiation. Provides information about the binary before merger; it is not itself the remnant’s ringdown.
Merger The horizons join and the gravitational-wave amplitude reaches its strongest, rapidly changing phase. Marks the transition to the remnant’s settling behavior.
Ringdown The newly formed black hole’s distortions decay as damped oscillations. Contains the QNM information used for black-hole spectroscopy.

Choosing the ringdown start

The ringdown does not begin as a perfectly sharp, visually marked boundary. Analysts choose a reference time after merger and fit a model appropriate to the post-merger signal. That choice is part of the analysis, and different choices can change how strongly a short-lived overtone is supported. The relevant question is not whether a separate line can be seen by eye, but whether a damped waveform model is favored by the measured data.

How researchers detect a quasinormal mode

  1. Identify the post-merger data

Analysts first locate the merger in the reconstructed gravitational-wave signal and select the subsequent time interval in which the remnant’s perturbations can be described by damped oscillations. A ringdown-only analysis deliberately uses this post-merger portion and does not use inspiral information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Construct a damped-mode waveform

The analysis specifies one or more damped sinusoids. The model contains parameters such as each mode’s frequency, damping time, amplitude and phase. A model may allow the mode properties to vary freely, or it may constrain them using the frequencies predicted for a Kerr black hole with a particular mass and spin.

  3. Compare the model with noisy detector data

Gravitational-wave detectors record instrumental noise as well as any astrophysical signal. Because the expected waveform can be modeled, analysts use matched filtering to compare the data with templates and calculate how strongly the data support a signal. As the LIGO explainer puts it, “Since we can model the signature waveform, we can utilize a signal-processing technique known as ‘matched filtering’ to search noisy detector data for a weak hidden signal.”

For ringdown work, the templates describe the predicted damped oscillations rather than an inspiral-only signal. The resulting signal-to-noise ratio indicates how prominent the modeled pattern is relative to noise; it is not, by itself, proof that every fitted mode is independently resolved.

  4. Check consistency across detectors and models

A credible candidate should be compatible with the data from the operating detectors at the expected arrival times and with the detector responses to the same gravitational wave. Analysts also compare alternative waveform models, vary the ringdown start time and examine whether adding a mode improves the fit in a way that is robust to reasonable analysis choices.

These checks matter because random noise can resemble a short damped oscillation. Evidence that favors an overtone in one fit is more persuasive when it remains consistent across detectors and analysis variants, but it still carries statistical uncertainty.

  5. Infer the mode’s frequency and damping time

The fit produces posterior estimates, or equivalent uncertainty ranges, for the oscillation frequency and decay time. A rapidly decaying mode may be supported only for a short interval before its amplitude falls below the detector noise. Therefore, a reported mode should be described together with the analysis used and the uncertainty in its parameters.

  6. Test the remnant interpretation

For a Kerr black hole in general relativity, the mode frequencies and damping times are determined by the remnant’s mass and spin. Analysts ask whether one mass-spin pair predicts all of the observed mode properties within their uncertainties. Agreement supports the interpretation that the remnant behaves as a Kerr black hole under general relativity; disagreement would motivate closer examination of measurement errors, modeling assumptions or the underlying theory.

Ringdown-only and full-signal analyses

There are two complementary ways to estimate ringdown properties. They answer related questions but use different information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Feature Ringdown-only analysis Full-signal analysis
Time span used Only the post-merger ringdown segment. The inspiral, merger and ringdown together.
Information from before merger Excluded by design. Included to help constrain the binary and remnant.
Mode treatment Can test whether damped modes are supported directly in the late-time data; mode parameters may be allowed to vary according to the chosen model. Can impose a Kerr/general-relativistic relationship between mode properties and the remnant mass and spin while fitting the entire waveform.
Main strength Isolates evidence from the remnant’s settling phase. Uses the stronger information content of the complete event and can measure ringdown properties more precisely.
Main limitation Uses fewer data and is vulnerable to the short duration and low amplitude of ringdown features. Its precision partly depends on the assumptions connecting the earlier waveform to the ringdown.

Neither approach is automatically the “correct” one. A ringdown-only result tests the late-time data with minimal reliance on the inspiral, while a full-signal result can make tighter measurements by combining all available information. Reporting which analysis produced a number is essential.

What the GW250114 example demonstrates

The LIGO Scientific Collaboration reported that the gravitational-wave event GW250114 was observed on January 14, 2025. Its summary presents ringdown-only and full-signal analyses as complementary rather than interchangeable.

Ringdown-only result

In the ringdown-only analysis, the fundamental mode and the first overtone were favored. The collaboration reported that the overtone could be tracked for about three milliseconds after merger before it was no longer resolvable above detector noise. That duration describes the specified GW250114 analysis; it is not a universal time for every merger or a guarantee that an overtone will be separately measurable in another event.

Full-signal result

When the inspiral, merger and ringdown were analyzed together, the fundamental frequency was measured to about two-percent precision and its decay time to about nine percent, according to the collaboration’s 2025 report. Those figures are precisions for that full-signal analysis of GW250114, not generic performance limits for gravitational-wave detectors.

The collaboration also reported a constraint on a higher-frequency secondary tone. As an additional scale indicator, its explainer described GW250114 as “about three times louder than the first detection in 2015.” That comparison is the collaboration’s characterization of the relative signal strength in its explainer.

How black-hole spectroscopy uses multiple modes

One mode gives an estimate of a frequency and a damping time. The stronger test comes from measuring multiple features and asking whether they are all compatible with the same remnant. In general relativity, a Kerr black hole’s spectrum is controlled by its mass and spin, so the modes are not arbitrary independent tones.

A spectroscopy analysis therefore follows this logic:

  • Estimate the frequency and damping time of each supported mode, including uncertainty ranges.
  • Infer the remnant mass and spin under the chosen waveform model.
  • Calculate the Kerr predictions for the measured modes.
  • Check whether the observed values overlap the predictions for one mass-spin pair.

Consistency is evidence for the Kerr-remnant description. It is not a claim that the detector has directly photographed the black hole’s interior or observed a perfectly sharp spectral line. Every inference is made from finite, noisy data and a model of the waveform.

Why QNM detection is difficult

The signal fades quickly

Ringdown amplitudes decrease exponentially. The portion containing the clearest evidence can therefore be brief, and a mode that is initially favored may disappear into detector noise a few milliseconds later.

Several modes can overlap

The measured waveform is a superposition. A fundamental mode and an overtone can overlap strongly near merger, making their amplitudes and decay times correlated. A fit may prefer an additional mode without that mode being independently resolvable over a long interval.

Noise can mimic a damped oscillation

Detector noise is not a smooth, featureless background. Short fluctuations can resemble parts of a damped sinusoid. Matched-filter signal-to-noise, detector coincidence and model-consistency tests are used together to distinguish a plausible astrophysical pattern from a noise fluctuation.

Results depend on analysis choices

The selected ringdown start time, the number of modes, whether Kerr relations are imposed, and the treatment of detector noise all affect the inference. A published frequency or decay time should therefore be read with its uncertainty and its analysis label, such as “ringdown-only” or “full-signal.”

How to read a QNM claim correctly

  • “A mode is favored” means the data and the specified model support including that mode more than a comparison model does. It does not necessarily mean the mode is independently visible throughout the ringdown.
  • “The overtone is resolved” should be interpreted with the reported time interval and noise threshold. For GW250114, the reported interval was about three milliseconds in the ringdown-only analysis.
  • “Two-percent frequency precision” refers to the uncertainty of the fundamental frequency in the specified full-signal GW250114 analysis, not to a universal detector accuracy.
  • “Consistent with general relativity” means the measured quantities agree with the predictions tested by that analysis within uncertainty; it does not mean uncertainty has been eliminated.
  • “Black-hole spectroscopy” refers to using multiple ringdown features to test whether one Kerr remnant explains them, not to listening for separate tones by ear or reading isolated peaks from a raw spectrum.

Common misconceptions

A QNM is not a second source

The mode is a response of the remnant black hole. It is not another object that begins emitting after the merger.

Ringdown is not a perfectly pure tone

The waveform is a sum of damped modes, and the relative importance of the fundamental mode and overtones changes as the remnant settles.

A visible bump is not enough

Researchers do not establish a QNM merely by pointing to a separate bump in a frequency plot. They fit time-domain or equivalent waveform models to noisy data and evaluate the statistical support, detector consistency and physical interpretation.

One event does not set a universal precision

The GW250114 measurements are unusually specific results for one reported event and two analysis strategies. Other events can have different signal strengths, detector noise and mode resolvability.

The essential answer

A quasinormal mode is a damped, characteristic oscillation of a newly formed black hole. It appears in the ringdown after a merger. Detection combines a physically motivated damped-waveform model with matched filtering and other consistency checks on noisy data. The fitted frequency and decay time are then compared with the values predicted for a Kerr black hole of a given mass and spin. When multiple modes are supported, their joint consistency provides the basis for black-hole spectroscopy and a quantitative test of general relativity.
