A “mobile phone virus” is a common name for malicious software on a phone. Security guidance generally uses the broader term malware: unsafe or unwanted software that can steal information or harm a device. A warning or a slow phone may be a reason to investigate, but neither proves that the phone is infected.
What does “mobile phone virus” mean?
People often use “phone virus” to mean any malicious software affecting a mobile phone. The more useful general term is malware. Google defines it as “unsafe or unwanted software that can steal your info or harm your device” in its Android guidance on removing malware or unsafe software.

Not all malware is necessarily a virus in the technical sense. The official guidance cited here uses malware as the encompassing term and does not define the technical differences among virus and other malware types. Google’s Play policy describes harmful code that may put a user, their data, or a device at risk, including trojans, phishing, and spyware apps. Such software may compromise a device, gain control, transmit personal data or credentials without adequate disclosure and consent, spread spam, or defraud users; see the Google Play malware policy.

Do phone symptoms prove there is malware?
No. Google’s examples are possible warning signs, not a diagnosis. They include virus messages, unusually slow performance, reduced storage, device malfunctions, persistent pop-ups or new tabs, unwanted Chrome extensions or toolbars, unexpected redirects or browser-setting changes, messages sent to contacts without your action, and antivirus software that stops working.

A webpage that suddenly claims your phone is infected is not proof by itself. Treat it as a reason to close or leave the page and check the device using trusted platform guidance rather than relying on the page’s claim.
What should you do if you suspect malware?
On Android
- Check Google Play Protect. Google says it checks apps when installed and periodically scans the device. It may notify you about a potentially harmful app, disable it until it is uninstalled, or remove it automatically. Follow Google’s Play Protect instructions to review the protection setting and alerts.
- Install available Android and security updates. Use the update options available for your phone and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Remove apps you do not need or trust. Review recently installed apps and uninstall ones that seem suspicious or are no longer needed.
- Review your Google Account security. Check for unfamiliar activity and secure the account if anything looks wrong.
- Escalate if the signs continue. Google’s guidance says you might need to reset the Android device or contact its manufacturer for help.

On iPhone or iPad
Apple’s cited advice applies to a specific alert saying a third-party app contains malware and cannot be opened: delete the flagged app. You can also check Settings for more information about the alert. See Apple’s instructions for this malware alert. This instruction addresses that alert; it is not a general diagnosis for every iPhone symptom.

| Platform guidance | What it covers | Recommended action |
|---|---|---|
| Android | Play Protect app checks and scans, along with broader cleanup guidance | Review Play Protect, update the system, remove untrusted apps, check account security, and seek manufacturer help or consider a reset if signs persist |
| iPhone or iPad | A specific alert that a third-party app contains malware and cannot be opened | Delete the flagged app and check Settings for more information |
These instructions address different situations and do not establish that one platform is more secure overall.
