A midstream energy company operates the infrastructure that connects energy production with transportation, storage, and downstream markets. In natural gas, that usually means collecting raw gas from wells, processing it to remove water and impurities, and moving pipeline-quality gas through larger transmission systems. Some midstream businesses also store gas or handle crude oil, refined products, and natural gas liquids.
Midstream is not one type of asset or one universal business model. It is a group of connected services—gathering, processing, transportation, and storage—whose combination differs by company and region.

What does a midstream energy company do?
Midstream companies sit between the companies that produce hydrocarbons and the businesses or consumers that use them. Their pipelines, plants, compressor stations, storage facilities, terminals, and related services move a commodity from a production site toward a market in a form that can be transported and delivered safely.
For natural gas, the basic sequence is:
producing well → gathering line → processing plant → transmission pipeline → storage, distribution, or customer

This is a simplified path. A real system may include several interconnections, multiple processing steps, storage sites, compressor stations, and pipelines carrying different products. Some gas can enter a larger pipeline without passing through a company-owned processing plant if its composition already meets the pipeline’s requirements; other gas requires extensive treatment first.
The word “midstream” therefore describes a role in the energy value chain rather than a single legal category. One operator might own a gathering network and processing plants. Another might specialize in long-distance transmission or storage. A third might combine those services with facilities for crude oil or natural gas liquids.
Where midstream fits: upstream, midstream, and downstream
The three-part terminology is a useful map, not a guarantee that every company fits neatly into one box.
| Segment | Primary function | Typical point in the chain |
|---|---|---|
| Upstream | Finds and produces crude oil or natural gas from wells and fields. | Reservoir and wellhead |
| Midstream | Gathers, treats, transports, stores, and transfers hydrocarbons. | Wellhead through major transport and storage infrastructure |
| Downstream | Receives hydrocarbons for distribution, refining, manufacturing, power generation, or end use. | Distribution systems, industrial facilities, businesses, and households |
A producer can own midstream assets, and a midstream operator can provide services to several producers. The boundary is commercial and operational, not a rule that prevents ownership across segments.
How gathering, processing, and pipelines fit together
1. Production and the wellhead
Natural gas leaves a production well as raw, or “wellhead,” gas. Its composition varies by field and even by well. In addition to methane, it can contain water, hydrocarbon liquids, and nonhydrocarbon substances. The mixture’s composition determines what treatment is required before the gas can enter a transmission pipeline.
2. Gathering lines collect raw gas
Gathering is the first midstream connection. Smaller lines bring gas from individual wells or a producing field to a central collection point, a processing plant, or an interconnection with a larger pipeline. Gathering systems often operate at lower pressures and with smaller diameters than long-distance transmission lines.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration describes the function this way: “Gathering systems, primarily made up of small-diameter, low-pressure pipelines, move raw natural gas from the wellhead to a natural gas processing plant or to an interconnection with a larger mainline pipeline.”

A gathering network can contain many branches, valves, measurement points, and compression equipment. The network’s layout follows the location of wells and the terrain rather than a single straight route. As production changes, an operator may add connections, compression, or capacity on an existing system.
3. Processing prepares gas for transport
Processing plants remove water, hydrocarbon liquids, and other contaminants as appropriate for the incoming stream and the receiving pipeline’s specifications. A plant may separate natural gas liquids from the methane-rich gas stream, remove unwanted compounds, dry the gas, and stabilize products for separate transport. The exact sequence is not the same at every plant because raw-gas chemistry differs.
Processing creates a gas stream that is suitable for pipeline transportation. It can also produce separate liquid streams that enter other midstream systems. Processing is thus both a treatment step and a point where one raw stream becomes several marketable or transportable streams.
4. Transmission moves prepared gas over long distances
After processing, gas can enter a high-pressure transmission system. Transmission pipelines move gas from producing regions toward distribution regions and connect processing areas, storage facilities, and major consuming markets. Compressor stations maintain pressure as gas travels over long distances; measurement and control equipment helps operators schedule and balance flows.

Storage connects supply available at one time with demand at another. Gas may be injected into storage when supply exceeds immediate use and withdrawn when consumption rises. From transmission systems, gas can move into local distribution networks, industrial facilities, power plants, export facilities, or other large customers. A midstream company may own the storage site, provide transportation to it, or simply interconnect with infrastructure owned by another operator.
Gathering systems in more detail
Gathering lines are designed around production geography. A “spoke” from each well can feed a central header, which then sends combined volumes to processing or a mainline connection. The operator must account for changing well output, pressure differences, liquids in the line, access roads, erosion, corrosion, and safe control of the system.
Gathering is often described as low pressure relative to transmission, but that description is comparative rather than a universal operating limit. Equipment and pressures vary by field and design. A gathering line can also be physically substantial when it serves a large production area.

Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration material defines gathering lines as pipelines that carry crude oil or natural gas from a production site to a central collection point. PHMSA says these lines generally operate at relatively low pressures and flows and are smaller than transmission lines. The agency also states that gathering pipelines are regulated under federal pipeline-safety rules subject to specific exceptions.
That qualification matters: calling a line “gathering” does not automatically establish that it is exempt from every safety requirement. Legal classification depends on the applicable definitions, the line’s characteristics, and the facts of the installation. Operators and readers evaluating a particular project should consult the current federal rule and the relevant state requirements.
What happens inside a natural gas processing plant?
Processing begins with separation and conditioning suited to the raw stream. Facilities can remove free liquids, dry the gas, separate natural gas liquids, and reduce contaminants that would interfere with transport or downstream use. The plant may send methane-rich residue gas to a transmission pipeline while routing separated liquids to another gathering, fractionation, storage, or transport system.
There is no single checklist that applies to every plant. A “dry” gas stream may need less liquids recovery than a “wet” stream. The presence of water, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen, or other substances can change the required equipment and operating controls. Pipeline specifications, contracts, environmental permits, and the destination market also influence the design.
Processing therefore differs from simply compressing gas. Compression raises pressure to move a stream; processing changes its composition or removes materials so the stream meets a specification. A facility can perform both functions, but they are distinct services.

Transmission systems are the long-distance backbone of the gas network. They connect producing areas with storage, distribution regions, power generators, industrial users, and other markets. A transmission operator coordinates receipts and deliveries, monitors pressure and gas quality, and manages scheduled nominations under its operating rules and contracts.
Compressor stations add energy to the flow to overcome friction and elevation changes. A station may include compressors, coolers, valves, monitoring systems, emergency shutdown equipment, and measurement facilities. The number and placement of stations depend on pipeline diameter, pressure, distance, throughput, terrain, and operating conditions.

Interconnections allow gas to move between systems or into a processing plant, storage site, distribution network, or large customer. Interconnection points are operational and commercial handoffs: each party must agree on measurement, pressure, gas quality, scheduling, and responsibility for equipment.
Which assets and services can a midstream company provide?
| Asset or service | What it does | Questions to ask about a company |
|---|---|---|
| Gathering network | Collects raw gas or oil from wells and fields. | How extensive is the network, and what production areas does it connect? |
| Processing plant | Removes water, liquids, and other impurities; separates streams as needed. | What inlet composition, capacity, products, and market connections does the plant have? |
| Transmission pipeline | Moves prepared gas or other hydrocarbons over longer distances. | Which producing regions, storage sites, and markets are connected? |
| Storage facility | Holds gas or another product for later withdrawal and delivery. | What product is stored, and how do injection and withdrawal arrangements work? |
| Liquids or product infrastructure | Handles natural gas liquids, crude oil, refined products, or related streams. | Which commodities and facilities are included, and where are they transferred? |
| Compression, measurement, and control | Maintains pressure, measures volumes, and controls safe flow. | Are these facilities owned, operated, or provided under a service arrangement? |
A company can own some of these assets, lease capacity on others, or operate infrastructure for another owner. Its public description of “midstream” may therefore cover a very different physical footprint from another company’s description.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How to compare midstream energy companies
Start with the physical business before looking at a ticker symbol, headline or marketing label. The following framework keeps the comparison tied to evidence in a company’s current disclosures.
- Identify the commodities. Determine whether the company handles natural gas, crude oil, refined products, natural gas liquids, or several of them.
- Map the services. Separate gathering, processing, transmission, storage, terminals, and other logistics rather than treating “midstream” as one undifferentiated activity.
- Locate the assets. Note the producing basins, interconnections, storage areas, and customer markets served. Geography affects available supply, demand, competition, and expansion options.
- Read the customer and contract descriptions. Look for the duration of arrangements, volume commitments, reservation terms, commodity ownership, and exposure to changing throughput.
- Check ownership and operatorship. A company may own an interest in an asset while another party operates it. Joint ventures can make reported capacity and control different from total system capacity.
- Review current filings and agency rules. Company services, assets, contracts, and legal obligations change. A description that was accurate several years ago may not describe the current portfolio.
Official material establishes the existence of these service categories, but it does not establish one revenue model or risk profile for every midstream company. Do not assume that every operator is purely fee-based, insulated from commodity prices, or regulated in the same way. Those are company- and contract-specific questions.
How midstream companies make money—and why the answer varies
Midstream revenue can be connected to transportation, processing, storage, throughput, capacity reservations, product sales, or combinations of those activities. The commercial terms determine whether an operator is paid mainly for making capacity available, for handling measured volumes, for processing a stream, or for sharing in the value of products.
Commodity exposure also varies. A company that only transports a product under a defined service arrangement may have a different exposure from one that buys, owns, processes, or sells hydrocarbons. Even within one company, contracts can differ by asset and customer. A reader should use the latest annual report, regulatory filings, tariff documents, and investor disclosures before drawing conclusions about earnings stability or commodity-price sensitivity.

How large is the U.S. natural gas pipeline system?
| Measure | Figure | Date and scope |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. natural gas mainline and other pipeline mileage | Approximately 3 million miles | U.S. Energy Information Administration figure reported on its natural-gas-pipelines explainer; the page was accessed in 2026 and pairs the network estimate with 2022 activity. |
| Natural gas delivered | About 29.2 trillion cubic feet | 2022 U.S. deliveries reported by EIA. |
| Consumers served | About 78.3 million | 2022 U.S. consumer count reported by EIA. |
| Gathering pipeline mileage | More than 340,000 miles | PHMSA’s 2024 report cites a 2019 study; this is a gathering-specific estimate and should not be added mechanically to EIA’s network-wide mileage. |
| Compressor stations on gathering infrastructure | Several thousand | PHMSA’s 2024 report, citing the same 2019 study; the figure is separate from the EIA network total. |
The figures use different scopes and reporting dates. The gathering estimate is not a second measurement of the entire U.S. pipeline network, and the 2022 delivery number is an activity measure rather than a capacity figure.

Regulation, safety, and why terminology matters
Pipeline safety requirements depend on the type of line, the material transported, its location, and the applicable federal and state rules. PHMSA provides the federal pipeline-safety framework for many lines and describes specific treatment for gathering pipelines, including exceptions. States may have additional requirements or inspection responsibilities.
For a particular project, ask which agency has jurisdiction, how the line is classified, what design and integrity requirements apply, and whether the operator has filed the required reports and plans. “Gathering,” “transmission,” and “distribution” are useful operational terms, but they should not be used as shortcuts for a legal conclusion.
Safety management also extends beyond the pipe itself. Compression, dehydration, processing, measurement, valves, control systems, emergency shutdowns, inspection programs, and worker procedures all affect how the system is operated. The right question is not simply whether a company owns a pipeline, but what assets it controls and what obligations apply to each one.

A worked example: following one molecule of raw gas
Imagine a well producing a gas stream that contains methane, water, and hydrocarbon liquids. A small-diameter gathering line carries the raw stream from the well pad to a central gathering point. Compression may be used if pressure falls below the level needed to move the gas toward the plant.
At the processing plant, separators remove free liquids and treatment equipment dries the gas. Additional equipment separates natural gas liquids from the methane-rich residue gas. The residue gas is measured against the receiving pipeline’s quality requirements and enters a high-pressure transmission line. The separated liquids take a different route to storage, fractionation, a liquids pipeline, or a customer.
The transmission operator moves the gas through compressor stations and an interconnection into a storage facility or a local distribution system. If demand is low, the gas may be injected into storage; if demand later rises, it can be withdrawn and delivered to a power plant, industrial user, or household distribution network. Several companies may own or operate different portions of that route.
This example illustrates why “the pipeline” is usually an incomplete description. Gathering, processing, compression, transmission, storage, and distribution can be separate assets with separate owners, contracts, specifications, and regulators.
Common misconceptions about midstream
- “Midstream means only pipelines.” Pipelines are central, but processing plants, compressor stations, storage, measurement, terminals, and liquids infrastructure can also be midstream assets.
- “Every midstream company does the same thing.” Companies can specialize in one stage or combine several stages and commodities.
- “Gathering gas is already pipeline-quality gas.” Gathering lines commonly carry raw gas. Processing may be required before the gas can enter a transmission system.
- “A gathering-line label means no regulation applies.” PHMSA describes federal regulation with specific exceptions; classification and obligations depend on the facts and applicable rules.
- “A large mileage number tells you a system’s capacity.” Mileage measures physical extent, not throughput, pressure, storage inventory, or deliverability.
- “All midstream earnings are protected from commodity prices.” Exposure depends on ownership, processing arrangements, product sales, and contract terms.
Questions to ask when evaluating a named operator
- Which commodities does it handle, and in which regions?
- Does it gather raw production, process it, transport finished gas, store it, or perform several of those services?
- What percentage of its assets are owned versus operated for another party?
- Where are the processing plants, compressor stations, storage sites, and interconnections?
- What do the latest disclosures say about customer concentration, contract duration, volume commitments, and commodity ownership?
- Which federal and state agencies regulate the relevant assets?
- Are the company’s reported volumes, capacity, mileage, and consumer counts measured over the same period and with the same scope?
Answering those questions produces a more useful picture than relying on the label “midstream” alone.
The practical definition to remember
A midstream energy company connects production with markets. In the clearest natural-gas example, it gathers raw gas from wells, processes it when necessary, transports pipeline-quality gas through larger systems, and may store or transfer gas and related liquids. The exact combination of assets, contracts, commodities, geography, and regulation is specific to each operator.
