What Is a Microsoft Dynamics 365 Reseller and What Do They Do?

A Microsoft Dynamics 365 reseller is a Microsoft channel partner that helps a customer obtain Dynamics 365 subscriptions. Depending on its agreement and business model, the same partner may also plan the solution, configure or customize applications, migrate data, train users, and provide continuing support. “Reseller” describes the sales route; it does not guarantee a particular level of consulting or implementation service. Before signing, confirm exactly who sells the licenses, who delivers the project, who provides support, and what happens after go-live.

What a Dynamics 365 reseller is

Dynamics 365 is Microsoft’s family of cloud business applications, including products for functions such as sales, customer service, finance, supply chain, and field operations. A reseller is a company in Microsoft’s partner channel that helps customers buy those subscriptions. The reseller may invoice the customer, arrange provisioning, and coordinate the commercial relationship with Microsoft or another channel partner.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The word reseller describes the commercial role, not a standard package of services. Some resellers focus mainly on licensing and account administration. Others combine the sale with discovery workshops, solution architecture, configuration, integrations, training, and managed support. A single firm can therefore act as both the seller and the implementation partner, while another customer may buy licenses through one company and hire a different consultancy for delivery.

Microsoft’s Dynamics 365 partner directory describes partners that can help evaluate application fit, tailor solutions, implement and train users, and provide ongoing consultation and optimization. Those are capabilities available in the ecosystem, not promises made by every listed company. The named partner’s proposal and contract determine what you actually receive.

What does a Dynamics 365 reseller do?

The work usually falls into two connected areas: arranging the software subscription and helping the customer make it useful. Ask the partner to separate these areas in writing so a low license quote is not mistaken for a complete deployment plan.

Subscription sales and account administration

  • Recommend Dynamics 365 applications and license combinations for the stated users and processes.
  • Provide a quote, explain billing frequency and renewal terms, and identify taxes or other charges that apply to your region.
  • Provision subscriptions, assign or help administer licenses, and coordinate changes when users or products are added.
  • Act as a customer-facing contact for commercial questions, or identify the Microsoft or indirect provider that handles them.

Pricing, discounts, payment terms, cancellation rights, and support entitlements vary by arrangement. Do not assume that the price shown in a marketing page or an initial estimate is the recurring total cost for your organization.

Business and application discovery

A delivery-oriented partner can map current processes to Dynamics 365 applications, identify gaps, and recommend which capabilities should be configured, extended, or left out. Good discovery clarifies users, legal or industry requirements, data sources, reporting needs, integrations, security roles, and the order in which teams should go live.

Architecture and implementation planning

Partners may produce an application architecture, environment strategy, data model, integration design, project plan, and testing approach. The plan should state assumptions about data quality, source-system access, identity, regional availability, and customer staff time. Architecture advice is particularly important when several Dynamics 365 applications must share data or connect with existing finance, commerce, telephony, warehouse, or analytics systems.

Configuration, customization, and integration

Configuration uses supported settings, workflows, security roles, forms, and reports. Customization or development changes the solution beyond those settings, while integration connects Dynamics 365 with other systems. These activities affect cost, testing, upgrade work, and future support. Your statement of work should distinguish standard configuration from custom code, list each interface, identify data ownership, and specify who maintains the result.

Data migration, testing, and deployment

Many projects include extracting, cleansing, mapping, transforming, and loading data from legacy systems. The partner should define which records and history are included, who resolves duplicates, how migration runs are rehearsed, and how the final cutover is approved. Testing should cover business scenarios, integrations, permissions, performance expectations, and recovery procedures rather than only checking whether screens open.

Training and adoption

Training can range from administrator coaching to role-based sessions for salespeople, service agents, finance staff, or warehouse teams. Confirm whether materials, recordings, exercises, train-the-trainer sessions, and post-launch office hours are included. A technically correct deployment can still fail if users do not understand changed processes or managers cannot monitor adoption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Support and optimization

After launch, a partner may provide a help desk, incident resolution, release planning, health checks, reporting improvements, and recommendations for new features. Verify coverage hours, response and resolution targets, escalation paths, supported languages and regions, and whether minor changes are included or billed separately. “Ongoing support” without service levels is not a measurable commitment.

How the Microsoft channel route works

Microsoft’s Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) overview, version 23.30, describes three channel positions. The route affects who contracts with you, who provisions subscriptions, and who handles particular customer-facing responsibilities. Commercial programs and terms can change, so use the current agreement and quote for a real purchase.

Channel position Typical relationship What to verify
Direct partner The partner transacts with Microsoft and sells the customer solution directly. Whether this company is your contracting seller, how it invoices, and which support duties it accepts.
Indirect provider A provider supplies the channel infrastructure and may support indirect resellers. Whether the provider is visible in your agreement, which party owns provisioning and escalations, and how billing flows.
Indirect reseller The reseller sells through an indirect provider and may add its own services. Who the legal seller is, who can change subscriptions, and whether the reseller or provider handles Microsoft-related cases.

CSP partners can sell Microsoft software and services as a customer solution and set customer pricing and terms within the program framework described by Microsoft. That does not mean every partner uses identical prices, credit policies, renewal language, or support processes. Request a diagram or plain-language explanation of the parties involved before approving an order.

Reseller versus implementation partner

These labels overlap but answer different questions. A reseller tells you how the software is obtained and who may bill you. An implementation partner tells you who will turn the software into a working business system. One company may perform both jobs; separating them can be sensible when you want independent delivery expertise or already have an internal implementation team.

Question Reseller-focused answer Implementation-focused answer
What is being purchased? Subscriptions, license quantities, terms, and account administration. Discovery, design, configuration, migration, integration, testing, training, and deployment.
Who owns the deliverable? The commercial account and ordering relationship. The configured solution, project documents, custom work, and knowledge transfer.
What happens after launch? Renewals, seat changes, and subscription questions, if included. Incidents, enhancements, release management, and optimization, if contracted.
What evidence should you request? License quote, seller identity, billing terms, renewal and cancellation provisions. Work plan, named team, assumptions, acceptance criteria, service levels, and references.

Do not infer implementation competence from the ability to sell a license, or licensing expertise from a strong technical résumé. Evaluate each responsibility separately.

What a typical engagement looks like

The exact sequence depends on the applications and scope, but a well-defined engagement usually follows these stages:

  1. Initial fit discussion. Describe business outcomes, users, locations, regulatory constraints, and existing systems. Ask which Dynamics 365 applications and licensing assumptions the partner is making.
  2. Discovery and requirements. Document processes, pain points, data, integrations, reports, security, and non-functional requirements. Insist that out-of-scope items are recorded rather than left implicit.
  3. Solution blueprint. Review the proposed architecture, environments, configuration, customizations, interfaces, migration approach, testing, and adoption plan.
  4. Statement of work. Agree deliverables, milestones, customer responsibilities, acceptance criteria, fees, expenses, change control, intellectual-property rights, and termination terms.
  5. Build and validate. Configure the system, develop approved extensions, run migration rehearsals, test integrations, and let representative users perform end-to-end scenarios.
  6. Prepare for go-live. Complete training, cutover rehearsals, security checks, support handoff, communications, and rollback planning. Obtain explicit business approval.
  7. Launch and stabilize. Monitor incidents, data quality, integrations, and user adoption. Confirm who is on call and how issues are escalated.
  8. Optimize. Review usage, release changes, reporting, automation opportunities, and backlog priorities under the agreed support or consulting arrangement.

Questions to ask before choosing a reseller

Use the following as a due-diligence checklist. Microsoft does not mandate this list; it translates the channel, service, and FastTrack responsibilities into buyer decisions.

Scope and expertise

  • Which Dynamics 365 applications and business processes does the team implement regularly?
  • Which industries, countries, languages, and regulatory environments are represented in relevant references?
  • Who will lead discovery, architecture, data migration, testing, training, and support, and are those people named in the proposal?
  • Which work is standard configuration, which is custom development, and which integrations are included?

Commercial responsibility

  • Who is the contractual seller and who provisions or administers subscriptions?
  • Will invoices come from the reseller, an indirect provider, or another entity?
  • How are prices, discounts, taxes, renewals, seat changes, currency, and cancellation handled?
  • What happens to your subscriptions and data if the partner relationship ends?

Delivery and support

  • What deliverables, assumptions, exclusions, milestones, and acceptance tests are written into the statement of work?
  • How are scope changes estimated, approved, and billed?
  • What support hours, response targets, severity definitions, escalation contacts, and service credits apply?
  • Who owns documentation, source code, configuration records, and administrator knowledge after handover?

Evidence and references

  • Can the partner provide references for deployments similar in application mix, scale, geography, and integration complexity?
  • Can you speak with a customer about the implementation and post-launch support, not only the sales process?
  • What assumptions did the estimate make about your staff, data quality, testing time, and decision speed?

Microsoft FastTrack and partner projects

FastTrack for Dynamics 365 is a separate Microsoft customer-success path powered by Microsoft engineering. Microsoft describes eligible customers working with qualified partners as able to access Success by Design services such as solution blueprint reviews and go-live readiness reviews. Project nominations are required for FastTrack engagements across the Dynamics 365 application suite.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FastTrack is not an automatic benefit of buying from any reseller. Ask whether your organization and project meet the current eligibility requirements, whether the delivery partner is qualified for the relevant engagement, and who will submit the nomination. Put the expected FastTrack activities and your own preparation obligations into the project plan; do not treat them as a substitute for a partner’s contractual deliverables.

Costs, contracts, and ownership issues

A Dynamics 365 project has at least two cost layers: recurring software subscriptions and one-time or recurring professional services. A reseller may combine them on one invoice, but the contract should still identify each component. Separate line items make it easier to compare offers and understand what changes when user counts or applications change.

Review the following terms before signing:

  • License quantities and editions: named users, device or other licensing bases where applicable, application entitlements, and add-ons.
  • Billing and renewal: invoice timing, currency, taxes, automatic renewal, price-change notice, and cancellation windows.
  • Implementation fees: fixed-price or time-and-materials basis, milestones, expenses, and assumptions.
  • Change control: the process and rates for requirements discovered after the baseline.
  • Data and work product: access to exported data, configuration documentation, custom code, credentials, and transition assistance.
  • Support boundaries: what the partner handles versus what must be escalated to Microsoft or another channel party.
  • Exit provisions: how subscriptions, data, integrations, and administrator access are transferred if you change partners.

Have legal, procurement, security, and finance stakeholders review the agreement when the deployment is material to the business. A low initial services fee can become expensive if migration, integrations, training, or post-launch support were assumed but not contracted.

Common pitfalls and how to avoid them

Assuming every reseller provides a full implementation

Fix this by requesting a deliverables matrix that labels each activity as included, optional, customer-owned, or excluded.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing on license price alone

Compare total recurring charges, implementation effort, support coverage, renewal terms, and the cost of custom work. A cheaper subscription quote may not include the expertise needed to deploy it safely.

Leaving integrations and data migration vague

Name every source and destination system, data object, history period, interface frequency, error-handling process, and acceptance test. “Integrate with the ERP” is not a usable scope definition.

Failing to plan for ownership and exit

Ensure administrators can access the tenant, documentation is delivered, and data and custom work can be transferred. Confirm who can change subscriptions and open support cases throughout the relationship.

Expecting FastTrack by default

Check eligibility, partner qualification, and the required nomination before building project dates around FastTrack activities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using an unmeasurable support promise

Replace “24/7 support” or “ongoing optimization” with hours, severity levels, response targets, escalation paths, included work, and overage rates.

How to compare two or more partners

Score proposals against the same criteria rather than comparing sales presentations. A simple weighted worksheet can include:

Evaluation area Evidence to compare
Application and industry fit Named consultants, relevant references, certifications or documented experience, and understanding of your processes.
Implementation method Discovery depth, architecture artifacts, testing approach, migration rehearsals, cutover and rollback plan.
Customization and integration discipline Use of supported capabilities, interface inventory, upgrade impact analysis, monitoring and ownership.
Training and adoption Role-based curriculum, materials, administrator enablement, communications and post-launch coaching.
Support quality Hours, response commitments, escalation model, staffing, service reviews and included enhancements.
Commercial clarity Seller identity, license and service price separation, renewal terms, assumptions, exclusions and exit rights.
References and team continuity Comparable customer contacts, named delivery staff, subcontractor disclosure and replacement process.

Ask each finalist to explain one difficult scenario—such as poor legacy data, a failed integration, or a late requirement—and show how its process handles it. The answer reveals more than a generic capability list.

What is established—and what is not

Microsoft’s official partner materials establish that the ecosystem can support application selection, architecture, implementation, tailoring, training, support, and optimization, and that CSP structures can involve direct and indirect parties. They do not establish one universal reseller service package, price, service level, or success rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Customer stories are individual examples, not industry benchmarks. For example, a Microsoft customer story dated August 18, 2026 reports COSMO CONSULT’s pipeline rising from €30 million to €124 million over three years. That result belongs to the named company and its specific deployment; it should not be presented as a typical outcome for Dynamics 365 resellers or their customers.

When you may not need a reseller-led implementation

You may only need a licensing channel if your organization already has Dynamics 365 administrators, solution architects, data engineers, trainers, and support coverage. Conversely, a complex, multi-application rollout usually benefits from a partner that can own discovery, architecture, migration, testing, adoption, and stabilization. Some organizations use a reseller for subscriptions and a separate specialist for implementation; document the handoffs so no requirement falls between contracts.

The practical test is not whether a company calls itself a reseller. It is whether the named team accepts responsibility for the commercial and technical outcomes you need, with those responsibilities, assumptions, and limits written into enforceable agreements.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
