What Is a Metroidvania? A Beginner’s Guide to Exploration, Backtracking, and Ability Gates

A Metroidvania is an exploration-focused action game set in a connected world. You discover abilities or items that let you pass obstacles that were impossible earlier, then return to old areas to uncover routes, secrets, shortcuts, and story clues.

The label is flexible rather than an official checklist. A game can use side-scrolling action, role-playing systems, different camera angles, or unusual combat and still fit if exploration, ability-gated access, and meaningful revisits form its central progression loop.

What makes a game a Metroidvania?

The defining feature is not simply a 2D camera or a difficult boss. It is the relationship between a connected map and a growing set of capabilities. The world contains places you can see but cannot yet reach. Progress comes from exploring somewhere else, gaining a new tool, and recognizing how that tool changes the earlier obstacle.

Unlike a conventional stage-based action game, a Metroidvania usually asks you to navigate a persistent environment. Rooms and regions connect to one another, and your understanding of those connections improves over time. A locked passage is often a promise that your current route will make more sense later, not a dead end that exists only to stop you.

Nintendo’s official description of the Metroid series captures the contrast: “The games in the Metroid series don’t follow a linear ‘clear the stage’ setup.” Its guide describes exploratory action in a maze-like world where items and weapons expand the areas Samus can visit (Nintendo Australia, 2021).

The five ideas behind the label

  • Connected exploration: Areas form a navigable world instead of a sequence of isolated stages.
  • Ability gates: A movement skill, weapon, tool, or other capability determines whether a route is usable.
  • Backtracking: You revisit earlier locations after your options have changed.
  • Map learning: The map, landmarks, and environmental clues help you remember where a new ability might matter.
  • Discovery-led progression: Finding the next useful destination is part of the challenge, not merely following a fixed mission list.

Combat can be central, optional, or relatively light. Experience levels and equipment can appear, but neither is mandatory. The exploration-and-access relationship is the essential idea.

Where the name “Metroidvania” comes from

The word combines Metroid and Castlevania. Metroid (1986) established the pattern of exploring a maze-like environment, collecting tools, and using them to reach previously inaccessible locations. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (1997) is the Castlevania title most often associated with the form because it combined a large interconnected castle with ability-based exploration, combat, equipment, and role-playing progression.

Bandai Namco’s 2025 genre overview presents those games as the shorthand’s major reference points, while stressing that the term is a useful working description rather than a universal standard. The GDC Vault description for Koji Igarashi’s 2014 talk likewise traces a blend of action-adventure, exploration, and backtracking from early Metroid through the later Castlevania example.

Igarashi, identified by PLAYISM as the creator of the Bloodstained series, recalled in a 2025 interview: “The name ‘Metroidvania’ started in the United States, and the first time I learned of it was during the Kickstarter campaign for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night back in 2015.” That is his recollection of when he encountered the term, not definitive evidence of who coined it.

How the Metroidvania progression loop works

A well-designed game makes the loop understandable without spelling out every answer. It typically unfolds in this order:

  1. Encounter a blocked route. You find a ledge that is too high, a tunnel too narrow, a barrier resistant to your current weapon, or a mechanism you cannot operate. The obstacle is readable enough to remember.
  2. Explore another branch. You leave the blockage and search connected rooms, a different region, or a side path. Exploration may involve combat, environmental puzzles, platforming, or simply learning the layout.
  3. Acquire a capability. A new item changes what your character can do. It might add a jump, dash, grapple, wall movement, projectile type, defensive effect, or interaction with a particular object.
  4. Reinterpret the map. You recall places that looked almost reachable or use map markers to identify them. The new ability changes the meaning of old geography.
  5. Return and open the route. You go back, apply the capability, and gain access to a room, shortcut, upgrade, boss path, story reveal, or the next major region.

The reward is not only the item at the end. The satisfying moment is realizing that a tool you earned has a specific relationship with a place you already know. Game Developer’s reporting on Igarashi’s design discussion describes this expanding toolset and the act of doubling back after learning how to reach a previously inaccessible area.

What are ability gates?

An ability gate is an obstacle whose solution depends on a capability you have not acquired yet. The gate can be physical, mechanical, or informational. A strong gate communicates both that the route matters and that you currently lack the right answer.

Movement gates

Movement abilities alter the geometry of the world. A higher jump reaches platforms above you; a dash crosses a long gap; a grapple attaches to distant points; wall movement turns a vertical shaft into a climbable route; swimming or a protective suit permits travel through a hazardous area. The important distinction is that the ability changes navigation itself, not merely your damage output.

Combat and weapon gates

Some barriers respond only to a weapon type or attack property. A shield may require a charged strike, an armored enemy may block a passage until you obtain a piercing attack, or a destructible material may react to explosives. These gates often combine combat and exploration: defeating an enemy can be the key to opening a corridor rather than an isolated arena challenge.

Interaction gates

A tool can let you operate machinery, translate symbols, activate a terminal, or manipulate a particular environmental object. Interaction gates are especially useful for world-building because the locked mechanism can establish that a place has a history before you know how to use it.

Knowledge and sequence gates

Not every gate is a new button or item. Some require information, such as recognizing a pattern, understanding a symbol, discovering a password, or learning the correct order for a puzzle. These gates test observation rather than statistics and can remain satisfying even when the character’s abilities have not changed.

Soft gates and hard gates

A hard gate makes progress impossible until you obtain the required capability. A soft gate is technically passable but strongly discourages entry through damage, environmental danger, difficult jumps, or enemies far above your current strength. Soft gates provide flexibility, while hard gates make the intended progression clearer. Games often mix both approaches.

Why backtracking is central instead of pointless travel

Backtracking means returning to an earlier area after your options have changed. In a poor implementation it becomes empty distance: long corridors, repeated fights, and no meaningful discovery. In a good Metroidvania it is a form of payoff.

What makes a return trip worthwhile

  • A visible clue: You remember the ledge, sealed door, unusual material, or symbol that signaled a future solution.
  • A changed route: A shortcut, elevator, one-way door, or connected passage reduces the amount of repeated travel.
  • A meaningful reward: The newly opened space contains a major ability, upgrade, optional challenge, story information, or a route that advances the main journey.
  • A new interpretation: The area reveals information that was hidden by your limited perspective, making the world feel coherent rather than randomly locked.

Designers can also make revisits more interesting by changing enemy placement, adding a new environmental hazard, or letting the player approach an old room from a different entrance. The goal is not to eliminate every repeated step; it is to ensure the trip has a reason.

Why the map matters

The map is both a navigation tool and a record of your changing abilities. Early on, it shows a confusing collection of rooms. Later, it becomes a set of questions: Which unexplored branch was above the shaft? Where was that suspicious blue door? Which region connects to the passage I could not cross?

Modern games commonly use icons, colored doors, room completion markers, or custom pins. Nintendo’s Metroid Dread guide specifically describes map markers and icons that help players identify locations worth revisiting after gaining an ability. These systems reduce memory pressure without removing discovery, because you still decide which clue is relevant.

Reading a map efficiently

  1. Mark a gate immediately when you encounter it, using the game’s marker system or a written note.
  2. Record what appears to block it: height, distance, material, damage type, hazard, or puzzle symbol.
  3. When you acquire a new capability, scan your markers before wandering randomly.
  4. Prioritize routes that are close to a shortcut or transport point, then investigate distant markers when the map provides a safe connection.
  5. Clear or replace markers once you have tested the location so your map remains a useful plan rather than a pile of old guesses.

What varies between Metroidvania games?

The genre label does not prescribe one camera, combat model, art style, or progression system. The familiar form is often a 2D side-scrolling action game, but developers and players also use the term for games with different perspectives when the exploration structure is similar.

Design axis How games can differ Question to ask while comparing them
Map connectivity Some worlds are tightly interwoven; others are separate regions joined by hubs, elevators, or travel points. How often do areas reconnect, and how much does the world reward learning its layout?
Ability dependence One game may lock most major routes behind movement skills; another may use only a few gates and leave more freedom. Does gaining a tool open several meaningful destinations or just one short passage?
Backtracking frequency Some games expect frequent returns, while others automate travel with shortcuts or fast movement. How much time is spent revisiting old rooms, and does each return offer a clear purpose?
Combat emphasis Combat may be the main test, a support system, or a minor obstacle between discoveries. Are weapons primarily for defeating enemies, opening gates, or both?
Role-playing progression Experience, levels, equipment, and boss rewards may be deep systems or absent entirely. Does character power come from statistics, new abilities, player skill, or a mixture?

RPG elements are compatible with the form but not required. Game Developer’s account of Igarashi’s design notes that Symphony of the Night used experience and boss rewards while also emphasizing exploration through a growing toolset. A game can therefore feel strongly Metroidvania-like without having levels, loot, or build customization.

How to tell whether a game fits the genre

Genre boundaries are matters of emphasis, so use a set of practical tests rather than a pass-or-fail checklist.

  • World test: Do locations form a persistent network that you learn over time?
  • Access test: Do new abilities or tools unlock routes that were previously unavailable?
  • Return test: Does revisiting earlier areas reveal meaningful content rather than only repeated combat?
  • Discovery test: Does the game expect you to identify destinations and connections, not merely follow a linear stage order?
  • Map test: Does navigation, whether assisted by an on-screen map or your own memory, matter to progression?

A game does not need to satisfy every test equally. One title may prioritize combat and have a compact map; another may minimize fighting and focus on environmental exploration. These axes explain the experience more accurately than arguing over a rigid definition.

A beginner’s way to play a Metroidvania

1. Treat blocked routes as information

When a passage is inaccessible, do not assume you missed a secret switch immediately. Look at the obstacle and identify what kind of capability would solve it. A high ledge suggests vertical movement; a long gap suggests a dash or grapple; a sealed material suggests a weapon or interaction tool.

2. Explore laterally when progress stops

Search the rooms branching from your current position before repeatedly attempting the same obstacle. Check upper and lower paths, suspicious walls, side chambers, and doors that looked optional. The intended ability is often in another branch of the same region rather than far across the entire world.

3. Keep your own memory organized

Use map pins consistently. If the game has limited marker types, choose a simple code: one color for movement barriers, another for weapon barriers, and a third for puzzles or collectibles. The point is not perfect completion; it is reducing the mental cost of remembering opportunities.

4. Test new abilities broadly

After obtaining a capability, try it in several contexts. Developers often introduce a tool with one obvious use and later apply it to less obvious surfaces, enemies, or movement patterns. Revisit nearby markers first, then expand your search as shortcuts make longer trips easier.

5. Separate progress from completion

You do not need to collect every upgrade before entering the next region. Optional rooms may reward mastery, while the main route asks only for the abilities necessary to continue. Decide whether you are aiming for a brisk finish, a complete map, or every secret; each goal changes how much backtracking is worthwhile.

A concrete example: learning the pattern in Metroid Dread

Metroid Dread is a clear introductory example because Nintendo’s series guide explains its exploratory structure, map details, and ability-based navigation. You encounter a route that your current movement options cannot handle, continue through another part of the world, and later return with an item or weapon that expands your accessible territory.

The example is useful as a way to observe the design pattern, not as a claim that every Metroidvania copies its exact controls or progression. Before buying, check the current edition, platform, and availability for your region. A searchable product phrase is “Metroid Dread Nintendo Switch game,” but listings and editions can change.

Common misunderstandings

“Every side-scroller is a Metroidvania.”

No. A side-scroller can use discrete stages, a fixed route, or arcade-style repetition without having a connected world or ability-gated exploration.

“The game must have RPG levels.”

No. Levels, experience, equipment, and stat growth are optional layers. The defining progression comes from access and exploration.

“Backtracking means the design failed.”

Not automatically. Repetition is frustrating when it adds distance without discovery. It is purposeful when a new capability, shortcut, clue, or reward changes the meaning of the return trip.

“There must be one correct route.”

Many games offer sequence breaks, optional regions, and multiple destinations after an ability is acquired. Others guide you more tightly. Both can use the same core loop.

“The label has an official governing body.”

It does not. “Metroidvania” is a community and industry shorthand whose boundaries shift with context. Use the term to communicate how a game structures exploration, not to police a universal formula.

Why the formula remains compelling

The structure turns the player’s growing knowledge into a form of progress. A new ability improves the character, but it also improves the player’s ability to read the world. A room that once looked decorative becomes a landmark; a blocked door becomes a future objective; a map becomes a network of hypotheses.

This design also creates a strong rhythm: curiosity leads to exploration, exploration produces a capability, the capability recontextualizes the map, and the return trip confirms that the world is logically connected. Combat, puzzles, atmosphere, and story can all plug into that rhythm without replacing it.

The takeaway

Call a game a Metroidvania when its main satisfaction comes from learning a connected world, gaining capabilities that alter where you can go, and returning to earlier locations for meaningful discoveries. Camera angle, combat intensity, role-playing systems, and the strictness of the route can vary. The genre’s heart is the evolving relationship between your toolset and the map.
