What Is a K-Shaped Economy? How to Recognize Its Effects on Jobs, Wages, and Spending

A K-shaped economy is a metaphor for economic divergence: one group’s income, wealth or spending rises while another group’s outcome stagnates or falls. It is not an official economic category with a universal threshold. Whether the economy looks “K-shaped” depends on which groups, outcome, time period, price adjustment and data source you use.

Current U.S. evidence through 2026 is mixed. Higher-income households often show faster spending or income growth, but other measures show gains across the distribution. To assess a K-shaped claim, identify exactly who is rising, who is falling, what is being measured and whether the figures are adjusted for inflation.

What is a K-shaped economy?

Picture the letter K. Its vertical stem represents a shared starting point; the upper arm moves upward and the lower arm moves downward. Economists and journalists use that image to describe an economy in which groups experience sharply different recoveries or living standards instead of moving together.

The groups may be defined by household income, wealth, education, occupation, region or another characteristic. The outcome may be employment, wages, after-tax income, consumption, prices or assets. A claim that “the economy is K-shaped” is therefore incomplete until it names all of those choices.

The term became common after the COVID-19 recession, when workers able to work remotely and households owning financial assets often recovered sooner than people in low-wage, in-person service jobs. The Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis traces that usage to diverging paths for high-income Americans and everyone else. The Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond emphasizes that no single definition is accepted.

Richmond’s strict definition is demanding: outcomes for high-income households must improve while outcomes for low-income households worsen. If both groups improve but the upper group improves faster, that is widening inequality, but it does not satisfy that strict K-shaped test.

Why the metaphor matters

Averages can conceal divergence. If high earners receive large raises while low earners lose hours, an economy-wide wage average may still rise. Similarly, total consumer spending can increase even while many households cut purchases. The K metaphor prompts you to inspect the distribution rather than relying on a single national number.

Is the U.S. economy K-shaped now?

There is no single, evidence-based yes-or-no answer for 2026. Different Federal Reserve analyses reach different conclusions because they examine different outcomes and periods.

Measure and period What the analysis found How to interpret it
Real after-tax household income, 1994–2024 Income increased for all three groups: about 13% for low-income households, roughly 26% for middle-income households and close to 63% for high-income households. Growth was much faster at the top, but every group gained over the full period; Richmond says this does not meet its strict K definition.
Consumer spending, 2021–2025 The Atlanta Fed payments-survey study found spending rose for both the lower-income group (first three quintiles) and higher-income group (fourth and fifth quintiles), with substantially faster growth for the upper group. Consistent with widening consumption inequality, but the result applies to that payment-survey measure and period.
Self-reported spending changes in the 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances The share reporting increased spending was about the same across income and wealth groups; reports of spending decreases were more concentrated among lower-income families. A qualitative survey does not show the same upper-income concentration as transaction data.
Consumption, 2021–2023 and later periods Richmond found a K-shaped consumption pattern in 2021–23. Its newer alternative spending series showed more uniform growth across income groups from 2024 until a decline in the latest period covered. The answer can change when the time window or spending series changes.
Modeled top-decile outlays, 2020 Q3–2025 Q3 A Moody’s Analytics estimate cited by Minneapolis put top-decile household spending growth at 62%. This is an inferred personal-outlays estimate built from financial and wealth data, not a direct government measure of household consumption; treat it as a contested upper-bound estimate.

The most defensible summary is narrower: some indicators show a widening gap, especially in spending and long-run income growth, while others show broad gains or similar reported increases. A claim about a K-shaped economy should always name its dataset and definition.

How to recognize K-shaped effects on jobs

Jobs are the first place many households feel divergence, but several indicators must be separated.

Employment and unemployment

Compare employment rates, unemployment rates, labor-force participation and job-finding rates by income, education, occupation and demographic group where the data support those cuts. A falling unemployment rate for the whole country can coexist with fewer opportunities for people without a degree or with jobs concentrated in vulnerable industries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Job security and perceptions

The Federal Reserve’s 2025 household well-being survey found that 42% of adults considered finding or keeping a job a minor or major concern, up from 37% in 2024. Among adults with income below $50,000, 30% called job security a major concern, compared with 11% of adults with income of at least $50,000.

Those figures measure perceived security, not unemployment. They show a distributional difference in anxiety, but they cannot establish that one income group experienced a particular job-loss rate.

Household versus individual outcomes

An individual’s job or wage is not the same as a household’s total resources. A household can appear financially stable because another member works, because it receives transfers or because it owns investments. Conversely, a worker with rising pay may still live in a household facing higher rent, medical costs or reduced hours for someone else. State whether a statistic describes people, jobs or households before drawing a K-shaped conclusion.

How wages and income reveal divergence

Wage data usually follow individual workers and hourly or annual pay. Household-income data combine earnings with transfers, taxes, investment income and the number of earners. These measures answer different questions.

Use real, not just nominal, growth

A nominal raise does not necessarily increase purchasing power. To compare living standards, adjust income and wages for inflation and specify the price index and period. A household whose pay rose 4% while its relevant costs rose 6% experienced a real loss even though its paycheck was larger.

Long-run income pattern

Richmond’s 1994–2024 analysis found the largest real after-tax income gains among high-income households, with positive gains for low- and middle-income households as well. That pattern indicates unequal growth rather than a universal decline at the bottom. It also illustrates why the strict K definition and the looser everyday use of “K-shaped” can produce different labels for the same data.

Why wage growth may not explain spending gaps

New York Fed authors report that differences in wage growth alone cannot fully explain the retail-spending pattern they studied. Higher-income households may also draw on accumulated assets, receive investment income or have more savings available after essential bills. A spending gap is therefore not proof that wages caused the entire difference.

How spending data can look K-shaped

Spending is especially sensitive to measurement. Before comparing a chart or headline, check five details:

  • Population: Are the observations households, cardholders, survey respondents or modeled consumers?
  • Income cutoffs: Are groups quintiles, thirds, the top decile or another definition?
  • Categories: Does the measure include services, rent, travel, vehicles and cash purchases, or only selected retail transactions?
  • Price basis: Are amounts nominal or adjusted for inflation?
  • Time window: Does it cover the pandemic shock, the 2021–23 recovery or the period from 2024 onward?

Payments and card panels

The Atlanta Fed’s payments-survey comparison grouped the first three income quintiles against the upper two and found spending growth in both groups from 2021 to 2025, with a faster increase among higher-income households. Card and payment panels can show timely behavior, but they may omit cash, checks, rent paid outside the network or purchases made with another provider. They are not automatically measures of all household consumption.

Surveys of households

The Board of Governors’ Survey of Consumer Finances spending analysis asks households whether spending increased or decreased. Its qualitative responses showed similar shares reporting increases across income and wealth groups, while decreases were more concentrated among lower-income families. Self-reported direction of change is useful for hardship and behavior, but it does not provide the same dollar totals as transaction records.

Modeled outlays

Models can combine financial-account and wealth information to infer personal outlays where direct transactions are unavailable. Minneapolis notes that the Moody’s estimate of 62% top-decile growth from 2020 Q3 to 2025 Q3 is such an inferred measure. Because it is not a direct count of household purchases and has attracted methodological skepticism, it should not be compared as if it were interchangeable with a government survey or a card panel.

Retail spending is not total consumption

A retail series may exclude services, travel, autos, housing or other large expenses. A household can reduce goods purchases while maintaining service spending, or the reverse. Two studies can therefore report different “spending” trends without either being mathematically wrong.

Inflation and wealth: forces behind the split

Different households face different inflation

Headline inflation is an average basket. Actual inflation depends on what a household buys. Lower-income households typically devote more of their budget to necessities such as food, energy and rent, so the same national inflation rate can reduce their purchasing power more severely.

New York Fed analysis reports that, in its series, lower-income households consistently faced higher inflation than middle- and high-income households from late 2022 onward. This is an association with the spending divide, not proof that inflation alone caused it.

Asset ownership can widen spending capacity

Households holding stocks, businesses or homes may benefit from rising asset values and can draw on savings when prices rise. Households with little wealth have less buffer and may cut discretionary purchases quickly. New York Fed analysis identifies wealth and financial-asset growth patterns as potential contributors to divergent spending. They should be described as factors that may contribute, not as definitive causal estimates.

Taxes, transfers and consumption smoothing

Income and consumption do not move one-for-one. Taxes and transfers redistribute resources, while households can save during good periods and borrow or draw down savings during bad ones. Richmond cites consumption smoothing and taxes and transfers as reasons spending differences may be less pronounced than income differences. Its consumption measures may also understate luxury spending, which is concentrated among affluent households.

Why reputable analyses disagree

Conflicting headlines often reflect different design choices rather than a simple error. Compare studies along these axes:

Axis Questions to ask Why it changes the result
Outcome Jobs, individual wages, household income, spending, inflation or wealth? Each can move differently for the same households.
Groups Quintiles, thirds, top decile, education, race, occupation or region? A top-decile comparison can show a larger gap than a broad top-half grouping.
Time Pandemic recession, 2021–23, 2024 onward or 1994–2024? Recovery phases and price shocks affect groups at different moments.
Prices Nominal dollars or inflation-adjusted real values? Nominal increases can hide lost purchasing power.
Method Government survey, self-report, bank cards, payment panel or model? Coverage, recall and estimation assumptions differ.
Coverage Total consumption or selected retail categories? Goods-only data may miss services and other major expenses.

For example, a 2021–23 consumption result need not match a 2024–26 series, and a card-based retail result cannot be treated as a complete household budget. Always read the definition beside the number.

A practical test for K-shaped claims

  1. Name the groups. Write the income thresholds or demographic definitions. “Rich” and “poor” are not reproducible categories.
  2. Name the outcome. Decide whether the claim concerns employment, wages, after-tax income, spending, inflation or wealth. Do not substitute one for another.
  3. Set the period. Record the start and end dates and whether the period includes a recession, stimulus payments, an inflation shock or a recovery.
  4. Adjust for prices. Use real values for purchasing-power claims and identify the inflation measure.
  5. Inspect coverage. Check whether the source captures all households and all spending or only a panel, bank customers, survey respondents or modeled outlays.
  6. Check direction, not just speed. A faster gain at the top is unequal growth; a strict K requires improvement for one group and deterioration for another.
  7. Separate correlation from cause. Consider assets, transfers, taxes, household composition and different inflation baskets before attributing a spending gap to wages alone.
  8. Report uncertainty. If credible sources disagree, present the disagreement and explain the measurement differences instead of forcing a single verdict.

What a K-shaped economy means for households

For a household, the most relevant question is not whether a national label is correct but whether its own income, essential costs, job security and assets are moving in opposite directions. A family can experience rising wages and falling real purchasing power, or stable employment and shrinking wealth.

  • Track income after taxes and transfers, not only gross pay.
  • Compare essential-cost inflation with the household’s actual spending basket.
  • Distinguish temporary spending cuts from a sustained loss of consumption.
  • Include debt payments, emergency savings and asset values when judging financial resilience.
  • When reading economic claims, look for the group definition, period and data method before accepting the headline.

Bottom line: use “K-shaped” as a precise description, not a verdict

A K-shaped economy describes divergence, not a formal condition that an entire country either has or lacks. U.S. evidence through 2026 shows faster long-run income growth at the top and faster spending growth for higher-income groups in some datasets, alongside broad income gains and survey results that do not show a uniformly top-heavy increase. The reliable way to recognize the pattern is to specify who is being compared, which outcome is rising or falling, whether values are real, how the data were collected and which dates they cover.
